What does near mean? Were the balloons over those states? Were they offshore but over U.S. territorial waters? The Washington Post suggested the Pentagon was not being entirely clear. "The Defense Department was not specific about where in each state the previous incursions occurred,” the paper reported, citing Rep. Michael Waltz, a Republican on the House Armed Services Committee. “[Waltz] added that officials did not say whether the balloons made it into U.S. airspace, which extends 12 nautical miles from the shore, or over U.S. territory, too.” That’s an important distinction, isn’t it? Were the previously undiscovered balloons over U.S. territory or not? At this point, nothing is clear. In a text exchange, one Capitol Hill Republican, eager to question the administration on events, saw three possible explanations. One, the Defense Department is "conflating wildly different incidents, that is, balloons around Hawaii or Key West vs. crossing middle America,” a conflation he called "partisan spin.” Two, the Pentagon really did only figure out that the Chinese were flying over the continental U.S. after the fact, which he called "a huge military intelligence failure.” Or three, the military actually tracked the flights at the time but failed to inform civilian leadership of what was happening, which he called "a huge civilian-military scandal if so.”

There were balloons detected previously. They were never considered a big enough threat to cross the president's desk. This balloon didn't get escalated until they took a closer look, and from what I can tell the president was informed before it became public knowledge. If new information is made known the great, we can reassess and build the new information into our mental model. But I was making informed speculation not empty speculation. If you're choosing not to believe the information released then ok, but then we don't have anything to base speculation on except "the White House is lying and if so here's why they might be lying" .... Those are just different places to view this from.

The info about the existence of the balloon was made public under Biden and not done so under Trump (a fact and not empty speculation). It could be the case that Biden was informed and not Trump simply due to the fact that the balloon was going to be over the US for some time under Biden and therefore hard to just let pass by VS a short lived and hopefully undetected visit under Trump. That angle is just speculation of course.

The reality being that Trump inherited a pretty healthy economy and managed not to muck it up much. Until the lone crisis hit his presidency and he showed what he's really made of .... whining and blame transfers. Policy changes from Washington take time to influence an economy, and even then it's more like nudging an ocean liner. The Fed is the only entity with power to actually impact an economy in a short period of time, and even there its tools are a bit limited. Government obviously can have a big influence on the economy. It just doesn't change quickly.
