Posted October 14, 20222 yr Just curious. They say the flu is going to be nasty this year. I never used to get them until I got married and had kids. My wife convinced me to start (she works in a hospital and is required to). I haven't gotten the flu since, other than the one year when I moved and didn't have a chance.
October 14, 20222 yr Nope. Was forced to get them every year while in the USAF. Since then, I have declined. I stay away from sick people and wash my hands, etc. Don't get it very often. This is not a life saving vaccine that I think I need.

The flu is not something you want to F around with, even if it's not as severe as covid. You should just get both the flu vaccine at the same appt you get your covid booster. Timing wise, late-Oct or early-Nov is usually ideal.
October 14, 20222 yr I got it once. Got sick as hell. When I get the flu I'm normally sick for 2 days and then fine. I'll probably start getting them when I'm a bit older.

I prefer the risk to not be sick, than the guarantee that I will be. Also, being a reasonably healthy fellow with good hygiene, I rarely get colds or flu, since the kids are out of the house, no longer bringing everything going through the schools. I don't consider the seasonal flu a life threatening illness I must guard against with a vaccine. I am not against flu shots.
October 14, 20222 yr I can get a flu shot for free at work so it's nbd to hop over and get jabbed. Never got the flu since I started getting shots... EXCEPT the one year I forgot to get my kid vaxxed. Too busy with school, sports, practices, etc. He ended up catching the flu and was sick for a week. I took care of him at home; he gave it to me and I got better in 2 days. I can deal with minor symptoms of the flu shot (sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't). I feel it's better than taking a chance from full-blown flu.
October 14, 20222 yr Never have, so probably not. Gonna get that new COVID booster any day now, though.
October 14, 20222 yr FWIW we've been getting positive tests here for at least a week now. Hit the south about a week or 2 earlier. So the season is starting already if you were debating timing and are on the east coast.

October 14, 20222 yr Never got the flu shot in the past, last two years it has been mandatory by my employer… oh well….

I can't even recall the last time I had a flu, and it's way less effective at reducing moderate/severe illness than a COVID shot. There's a lot more guesswork involved in targeting the annual flu strains because there is so much greater variation and prevalence. So, yeah, I get you think that it's ironic, but they're different diseases with differing severity and a differing ability of vaccination to effectively reduce virulence.

Same boat as you, I never really had the flu or if I did (likely) it wasnt bad. As a kid me and my sister didnt get the shot because it didnt seem necessary for us. I started getting the shot as an adult because it was pretty much required for work. My kids get it because my older son did have it pretty bad once. He was a very hyper active kid and it knocked him on his butt for a couple days. So now they both get it. They didnt get my super immunity genes I guess.
October 14, 20222 yr Absolutely not. I have never gotten a flu shot and have had the flu all of 1 time in my entire life.
October 14, 20222 yr I’m pretty much forced to but I don’t mind getting it. My hospital finally stopped requiring masks while working last week. The catch is if you decline the flu shot they make you wear a mask. It was that way before covid as well. I’m definitely done with masks so I got my shot last week.
