Cox & Hargrave are still the starters. It's more important for Davis to get healthy in time for the playoffs and be conditioned in offseason to hopefully start next year.

Until then, next man up.

Not good - the big guy was placed on injured reserve.  He's out at least 4 weeks.

Can you add 4 weeks to the topic title? At first I thought he would miss the whole season.

That's a bit of a misnomer.   Davis is the NT.  When they go 5 man fronts, Davis is always the nose.  This dramatically changes the defensive philosophy.  They will not be the same team in the odd man fronts.   When they go even man fronts, Davis came off the field.  Very different roles.

Well, that's certainly a statement about his injury... isn't it?

Kempski wrote that the IR designation was expected.  What it does do is dispel any possibility that he will be out for less than 4 weeks.

Yes.  And the initial reports from Schefter was that he was out 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain.  To my mind, nothing has changed.  He's out at least 4 weeks, just as we thought.  What it does do is eliminate the discussions about why Sirianni, et al are so tight lipped about the injury.  Frankly, if it was gamesmanship for the Texans, who cares?  I'm guessing that the Texans saw him walking off super gingerly and weren't worried about him playing this week anyway.

He was going to be out 4 weeks, at least, anyways, so yeah, IR him.

Get back healthy as possible for the playoff push, Big Guy!

That's true, but they still get majority of the snaps and are the returning starters from last year.  Davis doesn't play all the snaps.  Yes it changes things but my point is don't try to rush him back in 4 weeks if he needs 5 or whatever it is.  Just get him healthy and ready for the playoffs.

Also, it probably just means we'll use less 3-4 base than we do with a healthy Davis. That's the advantage of our hybrid concepts. Of course, we still have the versatility to  move players around if we want. Hargrave was a NT in Pittsburgh.

I think you're over-thinking this.

It's an injury. An injury is a setback. Fortunately, the recovery timetable is less time than the remaining season.

eh not really overthinking it,  maybe looking for a silver lining that isn't there.

Placing him on IR makes perfect sense.  He need only miss 4 games ... at 6'6" 340 lbs, he isn't going to be able to play with a high ankle sprain any time before then.  Open a roster spot for someone who can contribute in November.  Get him 100% for the stretch run starting in December.

Hopefully he will be back against Titans...he will be needed to stop Henry

As long as he is truly 100% the next time he takes the field, I'm not concerned with when that is. Just don't rush him back. He's too important for the future.

Not having the big guy showed in this Texans game. Hoping he’s back sooner than later.

Agreed.  I know Pierce is good but that was pretty ugly on a few drives.

It was the fact that guys were getting knocked back every time. There would be a couple of Eagles players at times if not a few and somehow the runner would still get a few more yards. It was crazy.

Cox has been very mediocre and was awful last night.  They need a healthy Davis.  Don't know what to do about Cox.  He makes huge money, is a leader and all that but his play has seriously diminished.  You can't bench him but you can't let teams run up the middle at will.

RT and DT have to be both first round picks next year.

Agreed. Not sure why there’s been such a precipitous drop in just a year. He hasn’t been playing hurt.

Probably has something to do with scheme. Gannon is having him hold the point or occupy blockers more instead of just driving upfield. That’s never been his forte. Even in his prime years we had the smaller Bennie Logan be the traditional NT while he jumped into the backfield and did his thing.

Agreed, I think partly just aging and partly scheme.  Hopefully Gannon can figure something out for a few games until Davis is back.

Hopefully he is close to 100% by that week 13 matchup against Tenn ... his run-stopping ability will be needed to slow down Henry.
