February 4, 20233 yr We had 2 ferrets (I know that they smell, believe me, you don't have to tell me). Each of our daughters had 1, got them at the same time from the same breeder. Had them for going on 5 years now. A few months back 1 started to get bloated, took her 2 the vet numerous times, they ran all kinds of tests, x-rays, ultrasound, turns out she had some type of leukemia that's fairly common in ferrets. She died last Saturday. The other one became so depressed that she quit eating and drinking, completely gave up. We did everything from force feeding to intravenous fluids, gave her constant attention, nothing worked. She just didn't want to live anymore without the other one, died a little while ago. The amount of emotion and loss that a little creature like a ferret feels is amazing to me. I had no idea before. That's it.
