Some of the individuals flying these "warbirds" have no business being in a cockpit.  Way more money and ego than brains.

It was so negligent that it practically looked intentional

In addition to the loss of life (which has not been confirmed yet because they don't know how many people were in the planes, the planes themselves were a horrible loss.

That was one of 9 airworthy Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and one of 4 airworthy Bell P-63 Kingcobras

I believe I snapped a picture of that B-17 flying over our house back in August.

Definitely the same red wingtips as the one that crashed.

I’ve never been to an air show, but do they really just fly around at the same time like that?  Or did somebody really mess up??

I've never been to a WWII themed air show but I'd imagine the restrictions on air traffic and who's occupying airspace looks very different than some of the larger air shows where you have billion dollar planes doing demonstrations.

I'll defer to someone else who knows but I think the people flying WWII planes at CAF would be considered enthusiasts whereas the pilots flying F-35's and F-16's at bigger air shows are usually active duty, professional pilots.

Airshow flying demos are specifically planned on keeping the debris of a possible crash away from the spectators.  Thank the Frecce Tricolori for that.

Most likely 6 fatalities

From what's been posted elsewhere, two of the B-17 crew were retired AA pilots.

From watching their practice routine posted on Facebook, and then the video of the crash, the P-63 pilot obviously was looking at the other two fighters making a high-speed pass and had totally lost track of where the B-17 was.

I think also it was the only airworthy P-63F.

Yeah looks like he put the B-17 in a Blindspot on the descending left turn.

I love that warbirds are still airworthy, but we don't need to see anything like that. Honestly I'm happy just seeing them fly around.  I don't need to see a P-51 do aerobatics. I just want to hear it.

Honestly, air shows should just be A10 warthogs doing mock strafe runs by them self. Give me brap and let me go home

When i was a kid my grandfather took me to the mid Atlantic WWII show. Out of Fing nowhere these two A-10's come whizzing by on a low pass and then proceed to do a ton of mock attack runs. Was the coolest thing I've ever seen.

@MlodjyYes I'm aware of your opinions of them as CAS aircraft, but F are they cool.

Damn that’s awful 😞

What a waste.

Another option, given the P-63's descending, shallow bank is that he had enough airspeed and was at a low enough altitude that as he was circling to line up behind the B-17 he was able to pull more G's than he expected and "grayed out."  The natural reaction to that is to ease off the back stick which would account for the kind of turn seen in the video.  In any event the fighters are supposed to maintain altitude separation at all times from the B-17, that was obviously not the case here.

The ones I’ve been to usually have one plane at a time do a flyby and acrobatics or whatever. Obviously the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds do some crazy routines, but, that’s their job. Their only job.

Another option,

That makes sense as well.

(On this matter, I will defer to you for anything as or more complicated than a paper airplane. )

And even then, with the massive amounts of training and preparation, they still crash.

@Mlodj

When I was still active with the PANG and spending many week ends in the woods of Ft Indiantown Gap, A10s would often fly right over top of us on their way to the nearby range. They’d appear out of nowhere just over the tree tops, then disappear seconds before hearing their "BRRRT” echo throughout FTIG. It was pretty cool ish.

That must have been an entertaining two or three hours.

Lol

The nice thing about watching A-10's from the ground is that they put on a longer show.
