As measles outbreak sickens dozens of children in Ohio, local health officials seek help from CDC

Quote

About 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to measles will become infected, according to Columbus Public Health, and about 1 in 5 people in the US who get measles will be hospitalized.

However, the CDC says that more than 90% of children in the US have been vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella by age 2.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes or if someone comes into direct contact with or shares germs by touching the same objects or surfaces. Measles symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash of red spots. In rare cases, it may lead to pneumonia, encephalitis or death.

Anti-vax idiots. Polio in NYC, measles in Ohio.

Maybe we can bring back whooping cough?

Modifications to the pertussis vaccines have indeed made them much less efficacious.

There is probably a very small percentage of people that are genuinely  "anti-vax." There's probably a real explanation behind the outbreak.

"Freedman said that during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, while many people stayed home and some health-care facilities were closed, many children missed their routine immunizations – and they still may not have gotten their MMR shots.

"There are a lot of children nationwide that are behind on their routine vaccinations. So I think the message is still, if your child is 1 year of age or older, they need to be vaccinated,” said Freedman, a spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America."

It doesn't take many. We have measles outbreaks to this day, thanks to anti-vaxxers traveling abroad, bringing it back and spreading amongst themselves.

The USA eradicated measles a while ago.

30% of Americans never got a vaccine for the deadliest pandemic in century, not sure I'd call that a "small percentage."

Interesting that the left is now up in arms over anti vaxing.  This was a problem with lefties far before it was a problem with righties.

To be clear, all are idiots...but still.

Labeling them "anti-vax" for choosing not to get one vaccination that didn't prevent infection is ignorant. There are people that are genuinely "anti-vax," but they are few.

No need to direct this to me, I've always been very vocal about morons like McCarthy spouting nonsense about MMR or any other idiots that read crap on mommy blogs and think it's more substantiated than advice they get from medical professionals who've dedicated their lives to being informed on a subject.

And yet you wasted no time in connecting THIS anti vaxing issue to the COVID anti vaxing issue for political purposes.

No, they're the ignorant ones. They are by definition anti-vax considering the scope and scale of the disease enveloping the entire planet.

No different than any of the celebrities claiming MMR causes autism for a decade.

You guys trying to redefine the term "anti-vax" is thoroughly amusing though.

I didn't make it a political issue, the guy who downplayed covid for months on end before a vaccine was even available did that. It was reckless, irresponsible, and very likely backfired politically in the mid-terms considering the gap in death counts.

aaaand, we're back to Trump.  So measles outbreaks are now also Trump's fault.  Got it.

When you've given birth to the strongest anti-vax sentiment in decades, it's going to spill over into other decisions regarding vaccinations. We're already seeing parents forgo routine vaccinations for other diseases at increasingly alarming rates.

You think that sentiment is going to be equal across the board or will it be significantly higher in red states? Be honest.

This is you making it political right off the bat.

I don't care what party anti-vaxers belong to - any more than I care what party flat earthers support.

But how else with he put down those who disagree with his enlightenment??

I'm not defending Trump or any of his nonsense rhetoric around vaccines or anything else. I have no idea what states will be worse off with outbreaks, but if I had to guess I'd say the border states due to all the unvaccinated migrants coming over the border.

That being said, preventable disease outbreak is not new and these types of outbreaks were happening long before Trump.

The problem with measles is it's insanely infective. The R0 (number of individuals you'd expect one infected individual to spread the disease to) for rhinovirus is around 6. Chickenpox is around 8-9. Measles is about 15.

You need a much more robust heard immunity to prevent outbreaks than other diseases so all it takes is a small group of idiots and boom.

That's why we don't let unvaccinated kids in our office anymore.

Knowing you, I suspect this entire thread was politically motivated.  You'll now say that it wasn't...and I won't believe you.

I know all I need to know about you. You get exposed for doing exactly what you were complaining about, and this is your response.

Why did you create this thread?  24 cases of measles is nothing...even in recent history.  The below is from the CDC website.  Yes, I brought up politics, but only to make it clear that anti-vaxing is now a problem on both sides.  When I say making it political...I'm talking about blaming one side or the other for something like a small measles outbreak...which I did not do....but I suspect it was the entire purpose of your thread.

I created the thread because I read a story about another dopey outbreak of measles in the US. I posted about the last outbreak too.

I have no right/left political agenda in posting about my utter shock that we keep having to deal with these diseases we eradicated THROUGH vaccination.

PS - nice way to make up some BS. So cute.

That mostly came from the extreme left. Now the extreme right has joined them in their idiocy.

Maybe, the unvaccinated, who get sick, should be denied medical treatment.

Oh and which party supported denying the uninsured from receiving medical care, for decades.

Maybe those who choose to eat and live "unhealthy” lifestyles should be denied medical treatment.
