A big reason the Eagles offense struggled yesterday was minimal production from the tight ends.

Stoll was on the field for 81% of the snaps and caught 1 pass for 7 yards. That's it for the whole group. Roll in the lack of production on the ground for anyone not named Jalen Hurts and we have a problem.

For some reason, the Eagles don't want to run the ball and without Goedert, they don't have a tight end to target a half dozen times a game.  Teams are going to continue to key on AJ and DeVonta .  Something has to give.

I agree, but when you have a top three TE as your main guy who can both catch and block, it's going to leave a big hole. Calc and Stoll both gave up big penalties yesterday, weren't efective in either pass or run. We've been a bit spoiled with our continuity at the position - I can't think of a team that has had a better situation for, what, 15 years? Celek to Ertz to Philly G. That's a hell of a lineage to follow

Receptions this season so far:

Stoll: 5 for 56 yards.  One of those was vs the Colts for 7 yards
Calcaterra: 1 for 40 yards

This was the first game without Goedert.  Looking at Goedert's game stats this season you can see there is a game he had only 2 catches for 22 yards.  He had 3 games where he only had 3 receptions.  So he's not always putting up high numbers himself either.

You would expect dropoff when your starter - a top TE in the league - is out.  Hurts has built up chemistry with this starters and also playing from behind he's probalby more likely to look for his top targets in Brown and Smith (they got the bulk of receptions).

Let's see how the TE production goes in upcoming games, but you're not going to expect similar production as Goedert.  Just like you wouldn't expect Pascal or Watkins to replace Brown's production.

The thing that we will notice more over the next three weeks - minimum - is how effective Goedert is in the running game as a blocker, and how he creates space for the receivers. He's a stud. I expect Stoll and Calc to be a bit better and to progress as they get more practice time with the ones, but they are never going to compensate for Goedert and it's probably unfair to expect them to fill that gap adequately. Now, if they can be somewhat effective placeholders, then all good. But Goedert is more important to this offense than perhaps we (or many of us) realise.

Fair enough but they need to do something.  Pascal or Watkins could at least approximate some of the production and would get balls thrown their way.  The Eagles literally ignored the tight ends yesterday and damn near lost the game.  What are they doing with the 6 targets a game Goedert was averaging?  They're obviously not going to run the ball.

Someone joked about Gronk a few days ago. What do you bet Howie has made a call today though?

They've just got to find other ways. They've got to go heavy with the WR sets, they've got to get the RBs involved and they just have to find other ways. It isn't like they don't have other weapons and that's something we've talked about all here. This offense is loaded and now they need to adapt and get it done.

It won't be easy and it won't be pretty but it just needs to work and do enough. Goedert will return this year so they've just got to muddle by until then.

It was always going to be hard to replace a stud like Goedert, but it was only one game. Maybe now they will run more RB screens instead of TE screens.

They have to pivot and adjust. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to figure that out.

That's the thing, they've got to adjust and adapt and utilise other players. Goedert is a blow but they've just got to find a way to work with what they have. And it's not like they are left with no weapons. They've got a lot of options.

Its not a good excuse for their struggles. This is purely a failure on the coaches. Someone like Andy Reid would have gotten the offense going  without a hitch with all the other talent on the offense.

Backup TE was always a weakness and it was something they should have addressed more aggressively.

Of course you're not going to easily replace someone like Goedert, because he can do everything at a really high level.  But you can't have a situation where you rely so heavily on TE production, and your best backup is best suited as a blocker.

Sirianni's gonna have to get creative and figure out how to get the RB's involved more in the passing game.  At this point they're going to do more damage in the middle of the field.

This is all on coaching..

Agreed 100%.  IMO, they need to be much more creative with the offensive play calling.  Steichen's plays are uninspiring and vanilla.  Plus, the tendency to abandon the run is beyond concerning.

Our current TEs are not Goedert. But they still are TEs. Make plays for them and use Goedert plays for them.

I think we  wed to get Pascal more involved with Dallas’s absence.  He’s a decent WR with good hands and yet he’s under a dozen catches I believe.  They need to replace that production somehow and fast.

Stoll is a decent blocking TE, but out of the two from what i've seen so far Grant Calcaterra is the better receiving Tight End.
Of course they don't want to make it too obvious that Grant is always going out for a pass when he's in the line up.
They should have grant out there a few plays, he's good.

We don't have a talented replacement and they aren't going to find one sitting on their couch. Need to adjust the offense.

Eric Ebron and Ricky Seals-Jones are both sat on their couches now, or what the hell, see if Jared Cook or Jimmy Graham fancy one last run, all are better options than Stoll on the evidence of Sunday.

Just like the DT position, they probably used 1 game to determine whether or not they have the guys on the team to step up or not. If they don't think they do they will do something about it. Can't expect to replace an elite talent after 1 game

The Eagles were lucky there were world class DT available and ready to play. I don't know if they will be so lucky finding a Free Agent TE like that.

Coaches need to find out what Stoll and Calcaterra can contribute and scheme around that. Can they run block? Can they catch? They can't pretend they're going to replace all the things Goedert can do.

I'm going to suggest this falls a little bit on Hurts. This season, one of his biggest improvements is that he trusts his receivers to make the play. I don't think he has that level of trust in the backup TEs and isn't really looking for them when he would typically look for Goedert. It's important for Hurts to get whomever is in involved or risk losing that phase of the offense. Everybody understands these are the backups. Defenses do too and they will probably not key on any of them like they might with Goedert. So there should be opportunities.

It's not always about signing a FA to fill in. Sometimes you need to use the guys you have.

This should do the trick

That’s an oversimplification. If they guys they have simply aren’t good enough there’s nothing Hurts can do. Can’t just throw it to them when they are blanketed in coverage. Goedert is special because he has a knack for getting open, catching the ball, and running after the catch. None of the other guys can get open nor do they have the YAC ability.
