Bayless has always been up front about his reason for jumping to FS1 from ESPN. He wanted to work again with Jamie Horowitz, the hard-charging FS1 programming czar who transformed Bayless and Stephen A. Smith into TV stars at ESPN's "First Take."

On Thursday, though, Bayless spoke about the "hate" he allegedly encountered during his 12 years at the Disney-owned sports cable network.

He painted himself as a liberal maverick who was too hot for the conservative suits at ESPN to handle, even though the WWL has been under fire from critics for its alleged left-wing slant.

"I am not, and never have been, a member of the 'White Establishment.' The 'White Establishment' never liked me. I have worked for 'White Establishment' newspapers and television networks. The one I just left (ESPN)? That’s 'White Establishment,' man. And they never really liked me," Bayless, 65, said. "I don’t fit. I’m a communist, man. I’m going to break the rules."
