So much butt hurt here. Yes you are out of touch with reality.

Oh, look a "butthurt" comment because you don't have the capacity to argue rationally. Never change, CVON.

So, why'd you comment in the first place? Could it be that maybe it was your butt that was hurt?

Ironic. No, clearly it is not I who is out of touch with reality. The reality is that  many Americans have the outlook of "I suffered, they should suffer, too," rather than thinking, "I sufferered and wish that others would not have to suffer like I did." The reality is also that Americans typically work more hours than citizens in every other industrialized nation but get far less for their labors. The reality is that Europeans work to live, while Americans live to work. The reality is that our professional culture is a death cult.

Once again, I find it funny how anytime I post something in the pics thread, people can't just carry on as usual, they just have to confront me over the post because it struck some nerve. I must be doing something right if I can so consistently ruffle feathers.

Yeah, you kind of posted a tweet that implied that the majority, or at least a substantial amount, of Americans work three jobs. You were immediately hit with actual statistics showing only 5% of Americans actually work 2 jobs. That completely obliterated any point you thought you had, and now you are back pedaling and talking about how much less Europeans work.

Also, this is the political pics thread. I'm not sure why you are posting humorless tweets about socialism. If it's not a meme or a political pic, it should at least have a punchline to go in here.

I am not backpedaling at all. I think the Tweet used some hyperbole to make a point but the general point is valid. That 5% figure is honestly hard to believe. I'm guessing it has increased since that data was collected, but I won't argue with the figure. It's beside the point. My point in posting it was more about the common American outlook of "I suffered, they can suffer, too!" Americans generally lack empathy or compassion in this regard. That seemed pretty obviously to be the overall point to me, that was apparently lost on people in here. Also, what I posted is no different than a lot of other things posted in here. It seems like the pics thread has just become a thread for any kind of image, whether it's a Tweet or an illustration, and this one definitely has a political edge to it.

I remember a time when the US was generally doing better than "the rest of the world." If you look at the bottom, "the rest of the world," is mostly developing nations. We're certainly falling behind the rest of the industrialized world. Our standards have gotten too low.

USA is quickly devolving into a third-world nation, that I agree.

Lol. Have you ever been to Europe? Have you seen the flats most of the most live in? Or row homes ?

the American standard of a house is so much better than most of Europe it's insane.

Anyone that truly thinks Europe is such a better place for working less and having less is allowed to do the same here.

Yes.

Anecdotal, but a discussion about standards of living takes into account much more than the square footage of a typical house. It would primarily focus on things like access to healthcare, educational opportunities, nutrition, and childcare. This is getting detached from the original point, though, which was about Americans thinking that working yourself to death is a good thing.

Americans are bigger consumers. Houses cost more, overall shop more, eat more, etc. to do more you need to earn more, which means work more. It's not a hard formula to follow.

This is certainly true and a fair point. It's another issue altogether in my mind, but we can save the sustainability debate for another day.

I guess which is "better" depends on how a person wants to live their lives. While most Americans enjoy excess, there are a fair amount of people who prefer to live more simply and enjoy things that are not costly. Living the latter lifestyle is still pretty difficult here because basic needs are still fairly expensive in a lot of the country.

No, when you post something so ridiculous that suggests "Americans" as if majority of Americans are working 3 jobs and suffer from depression and have a miserable life, it's going to get a response.  If you want to argue Americans work more hours and those in other countries work less hours and/or take more paid time off, I agree on that. If you want to talk about mental health, that's another discussion and people who don't work or don't need to can suffer from depression.

Then you use phrases like "suffered" and "death cult," how is anyone supposed to take you seriously?  The stats showed less than 5% of people work 2 jobs.  And many people are working 2-3 part-time jobs or gig work to gather their income it's not like it's 2 full-time jobs.  Many do it by choice to have flexibility to run their side businesses or only working when their kids are in school, while attending college, etc.  When I moved to Southern California at first I took whatever job I could get, it was an office job that didn't pay what I needed so I had a restaurant job a few nights a week.  Then I found a better day job that paid more and was able to quit the 2nd job. My friend works in Amazon HR, they have employees that work a 2nd job there to get extra money to save up for a big purchase, to travel or something.  They have a lot of turnover because once they get the money they need to buy whatever it is they're looking for, they walk out and don't even give notice.  They are late, don't show up for work, slack off.  He says they're not committed because they don't need it to live, they're just doing it for some extra money.  Obviously there are other people who need the income.  But this idea that everyone is slave labor and in a death cult and suffering is ridiculous.  Yes there are people who struggle, many of us have been there.  It's tough on single parents or people in areas with not as many job opportunities and all that.  Not everything is going to be easy, sometimes you have to work hard and push through, set your goals and find ways to get there.

Working hard is a bad thing...wow.

And this generation wonders why we call them soft. This is why I don’t have children.

Americans work harder than Europeans, and that used to be a source of pride.
