Everything past, present and future is viewed through that lens. I don’t share such a narrow, tinted view. Up until relatively recently in human history, just about every nation would ban such a book during war time. Again, it is a hugely demoralizing book. Intentionally so. The idea of allowing your entire population to be demoralized by a book was not something any nation would even contemplate until a few hundred years ago, and most wouldn’t allow it even today. In fact, if I wanted to conduct a psychological operation on an opposing population, I would simply drop such a book written by one of its own population from the sky for them to read. I can’t imagine better propaganda. The tweet is a legitimate critique with a lot of merit to it. It would be true even if the author turned out to be Joseph Goebbels himself. The unrelenting agony and despair is something a LOT of people would remark on, perhaps not in explicitly political terms, but certainly in the spirit of critiquing the film as "wallowing” in misery. Reading the book or watching the movie would give clarity to his statement, I think. It’s a purposefully miserable experience. That is its raison d’etre. Gotcha. So someone who wanted to send other people to war, to die, don’t want you to know the horrific truth about where they’re sending you beforehand. Better censor that crap amirite? Freedom lovers unite in burning truths!!!

I didn’t read the book, but the miniseries I do think teased out the quirks of millennials. I disagree with you about recruiting though. Morale is pretty huge for recruiting. If you show a bunch of red blooded 16 year olds ads of guys with green faces jumping out of airplanes with bad arse gear, and the public narrative is positive about service and, yes, pushes the glory of victory over the depths of horror you can experience, I think it’s self evident that recruiting would improve.

Then we’ll tell them there’s WMD’s in Iraq and they’ll run in there like a bunch of crazed dogs while we grab control of the oil. Yeah sure some of them will die, but some people will get rich. So let's lie about the realities of what they'd be in for and instead show them only one particular point of view in order to send more kids to war? Since you like WW2, understand that one of the first things FDR did was create "the office of censorship.” 14 hours ago, Dave Moss said: Someone posts a meme TEW several posts later: we should ban certain books so our soldiers don’t get demoralized during wartime this place never ceases to amaze me Literally no where did I say that you illiterate, Hamas fellating, terrorist sympathizing nut job.

It is saying that neither "clear” debt and simply transfer the burden back and forth, while the government keeps adding volume to the cycle. Which, if you understand the economy, is totally true. Example: the government subsidizes housing debt, college debt, holds all the unfunded liabilities for SS and Medicare/Medicaid. The government also has its own debt from discretionary spending. And all of this "government” debt is ultimately on the tax payer’s shoulder.

I wonder if there's a name for that sort of thing, comrade. Where did I advocate for anything? It’s just a fact. In WW2, the US literally banned negative reporting by the press. Read this: Quote The rules for correspondents [were both] ... imposed and self-imposed ... There were no cowards in the American Army, and of all the brave men the private in the infantry was the bravest and noblest. The reason for this in terms of the War Effort was obvious. The infantry private had the dirtiest, weariest, least rewarding job in the whole war. In addition to being dangerous, a great many of the things he had to do were stupid. He must therefore be reassured that these things he knew to be stupid were actually necessary and wise, and that he was a hero for doing them ... A second convention held that we had no cruel or ambitious or ignorant commanders ... We were all a part of the War Effort. We went along with it, and not only that, we abetted it. Gradually it became a part of all of us that the truth about anything was automatically secret and that to trifle with it was to interfere with the War Effort. By this I don’t mean that the correspondents were liars ... [but] it is in the things not mentioned that the untruth lies. We felt responsible to what was called the home front. There was a general feeling that unless the home front was carefully protected from the whole account of what war was like, it might panic. Also, we felt we had to protect the armed services from criticism, or they might retire to their tents to sulk like Achilles. - John Steinbeck https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-war/communication-news-censorship#:~:text=More than 30 government agencies, feared would threaten domestic unity.
