I would think that would have an effect on voluntary enlistment as well. I’m not going to accept or support our government lying, misleading or hiding information from citizens. None of them, whether it’s the party I support or not. Not allowing the media to reveal the coordinates of our troops during a conflict is not the same, because that is FOR the safety of our troops. Now you can bring up the censoring of hate speech, but that’s also different because it’s typically littered with false information and it can also lead to endangering innocent citizens. Here is a hypothetical for you: If you were fighting WW2, and the fate of the war was hanging in the balance, would you (1) censor everything and win the war or (2) stand on your principles regarding censorship but lose the war? I’m curious even if it’s an unrealistic dichotomy. And how is censoring hate speech different? Mean words don’t hurt anyone. We literally learn that sticks and stones break bones but words never hurt in kindergarten.

If I’m a leader during WWII, and I can’t find a way recruit and gain support without using censorship to fool people into it, then shame on me. I also wouldn’t censor hate speech. Why not let those types of people expose themselves with giant red flags to keep them on a watchlist so when the speech turns to a plot to harm someone you can deal with them?
