They are going to have a tough time getting under the cap without cutting Barnett. $10m saved and zero dead money. It's a no brainer (even though our DE position sucks). They'd save $16m this year by designating Fletcher Cox as a post-June 1 cut. to me barnett would be no big loss. the idea would be to use the 1st or 2nd round pick this year to take a DE.

I agree that Barnett isn't a big loss. He's our best or second best DE on the team, but that's because our DE's suck. Speaking of sucky DE's... this year's draft class.

IMO, cut or trade everyone you can. hit the re-set button and pray roseman doesn't sheet the bed.

Anyone that isn't in the long term plans that can help them get under the cap if they're released... see ya later. At this point I wouldn't be upset at all if they moved on from Cox, Graham, etc. The Super Bowl era and window is long over.
February 23, 20214 yr Clever trick Eagles used to save cap space with Alshon Jeffery, Malik Jackson For our WU cap guru @paco https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/nfl-salary-cap-alshon-jeffery-malik-jackson-release-cut-nfl-free-agency

Given that we are potentially looking at over $50 million in dead cap next year, not having his base salary might be the best way out long term.

I just did a few searches thinking I posted a similar article a while back, but I cant seem to find it. Anyway, here is one from OTC back in early Janurary https://overthecap.com/eagles-get-creative-with-the-salary-cap/ This article from November goes into a deeper dive on what they did with Malik and Desean, but was applying it theoretically to Carson. They did a really good job IMO explaining how this could work... a method of prepaying his salary I wasn't previously aware of. Spoiler A Fantasy Scenario There is one additional option for Philadelphia but its one that would require them to make the determination now that they are cutting Wentz in 2021 no matter what and that no scenario exists in which they can trade him. Under this scenario the Eagles would have to modify his contract this year by prepaying most of his 2021 salary in 2020, dramatically reducing his 2021 cap number and then designating him a post June 1 in 2021. By rule they would have to do this in 2020 if they want to be able to still utilize the June 1. What would happen here is the Eagles would convert some of that money to a signing bonus. For the sake of argument lets say they convert $20 million to a bonus, prorating it at $4 million a season, and keeping $5.4 million as salary which would be subject to offsets if cut. That move would cut the Eagles carryover from 2020 by $4 million but reduce Wentz’ 2021 cap number to $18.67 million, a $16 million savings over his $34.67M cap number and a net savings of $12M. When you June 1 him you will keep the $18.67 million on the cap in 21 while deferring $36.55 million to 2022. You are not escaping the costs but this gives you an avenue to push it into a year when you are better off, thus getting to pick and choose when you want to pull the lever on some of those other restructures mentioned above. You can get more cap savings by converting more salary but I like the idea of a salary in the ballpark of $4-$5M because I think that can create a scenario where I may get to offset more than just $1M of that salary. I consider this pretty far fetched and I wouldn’t expect it but I just wanted to throw it out there in the event you see something happen with his contract in December and you begin to go crazy because of it. Anyway, that article is why I said on Saturday that Desean and Malik would be designated as post June cuts.
February 24, 20214 yr In conclusion let Hurts play this year. If he’s lousy we have a top ten pick plus a 1st from the colts

As you said give Hurts his year with a Jacoby Brissett as back up. We will know if he is the guy or not by the end of the year

February 25, 20214 yr I don’t watch college much but this feels like one of those cam Newton years were five QBs get taken and all but the first pick are lowesy
February 25, 20214 yr considering all of the needs this team has plus the fact that they took hurts in the 2nd round, i would def look in another direction and go for the best Dline or olinemen available. if they dont trade back.
February 25, 20214 yr i'm in favor of them drafting whoever will wind up getting howie fired the quickest.

February 25, 20214 yr There should be a couple of WR's worth taking at 6, but if Sewell falls you have to take him.

March 5, 20214 yr I know a certain someone will love to see this. @paco The #Eagles have restructured Darius Slay’s contract by adding 2 void years to his deal. This dropped his cap hit from $15.75M to $6.61M, clearing $9.14M in cap space. Slay will be with the Eagles through 2023, but the Eagles will pay him through 2025 now.
