April 3, 20233 yr Let's summarize: Charges are not yet revealed so we are speculating in part BUT it looks like a weak case where an overzealous DA has stitched together a quilt of events in an attempt to move a misdemeanor to a felony. In any case, Trump is almost surely guilty but will have his day in court. All the while, the idiots on both sides are doing their thing and Trump has grifted together another $10 while the NY citizens pay millions to provide security and court facilities to host the circus. Me? I have Georgia on my mind...

DeSantis is 100% a phony politician. If he thought "fiscal conservatism" could get him elected he'd adopt those policies (at least publicly). Look at what he did with Ukraine. He comes out trying to match Trump's policy position, then backtracked days later when the donor class (the only group keeping the Republican party remotely sane) rattled his cage. He's trying to be Trump-lite, and the problem is that there's only one Trump. DeSantis doesn't have any ability to "charm" MAGAs, the more he is out there the more he smells like a phony. Trump screwed Republicans for a decade. Trump needs to go away for the party to start to heal, and Trump keeps resetting the clock on that healing time by continuing to be relevant instead of fading into history.

DeSantis should wait until 2028; there is simply no path for him to become President in 2024. There are basically two possible outcomes, both of which end his political career: - He loses the primary to Trump after Donnie attacks him mercilessly during the campaign and completely eviscerates any chance he has of running again. Every single person who ran against Trump in 2016 is now a non-factor in the Presidential race -- Jeb, Cruz, Rubio. Before this, guys could run and lose the nomination but still come back the next time (e.g., Reagan, McCain, Romney), but Trump destroys any hope for the future with his merciless attacks. Furthermore, once he loses to Trump, he'll be forced to endorse him, and that stink will make him unelectable in a general election. - If he somehow gets the nomination, Trump will tell his MAGA base that Ron is a traitor and not to vote for him. Trump will be on TV every day savaging DeSantis, and liberal outlets will give him all the air time he wants. Trump won't run as a 3rd party candidate -- he will keep claiming he will, but he doesn't have the organization, skill or desire to do the work to actually get on the ballot in 50 states. But he'll make damn sure DeSantis loses. Sit this one out, hope Trump crashes and burns again, and then step in to be the savoir of the GOP by picking up the ashes.

I think DeSantis broadly sucks, so I'm fine with him killing his career here. His only value would be in preventing Trump from getting the nomination, but I don't think he's capable frankly. The more light gets shined on him the worse he looks.

DeSantis isn't great -- his political grandstanding with Disney, which has resulted in a massive all-time backfire, is proof of that. But he is still significantly better than Trump. Ron is playing a vindictive moron for the base. Trump actually is a moron.

I just think his chances of knocking Trump off are close to zero. He's losing by trying to compete in Trump's lane while not naming him directly, but also is faking the MAGA because I don't think he is actually an economic populist. Honestly I'm not sure he actually has real beliefs, but if he does I don't think they align much with MAGA considering his background.

He has no chance of beating Trump in 2024, unless Donnie is actually convicted (and even then I'd bet on Trump). My hope is that Trump gets crushed again, gets convicted in GA and on the documents cases, and the GOP crashes and burns to the point that it needs to be rebuilt. Post-Watergate the party rose from the ashes, but Nixon had the good decency to actually go away. Trump will need to be banished. Maybe then we can have an actual Republican party again.

Yep, this is the only way to salvage the party. Anything else is a slow rotting infection that will take decades (if ever) to recover from.

The problem is -- who is the Reagan this time? Rebuilding after Nixon took a generational politician with a new message. That's not Ron DeSantis. It's not Nikki Haley. The only one who seems somewhat possible is Chris Sununu, but he's got a long way to go.

He doesn't pander to the base. Thus, he has no shot, because the base is 70% of the GOP. Trump will be their candidate, even if he is doing time in Prison.

It might take another cycle or two for one to emerge. If Sununu is the guy that Maher just had on, then I'm not sure he has what it takes either. Dude apparently said he'd vote for Trump a third time should he win the nomination. That's the same issue with Trump stink like you touched on, Trump was just way too polarizing. Need someone that can walk the tightrope of acknowledging why Trump was bad for the party without turning away all the morons who still worship him.

Honestly, I think the only person on the R side that could deal Trump a bit of a blow is Christie. He has been visible this whole time being on ABC news and many seem to be warming to him probably because of his clear sanity. He is a true conservative and can tow the party line of "this is political witch hunt" while still rationally stating the Trump indictment is not a win win for Trump. IF he decides to run he can also, since he has now clearly distanced himself from Trump, go toe to toe against Trump. I still can't believe he didn't try and destroy him in 2016. He had the best chance, but instead chose to destroy Rubio.
