I really want to hike the Lofoten islands in Norway.  I have no idea who that kid is, it's just a google image search of one of the hikes there.  The problem is that it's notoriously cloudy and lousy weather, even in the best months of July/August.  It takes 3 flights to get there.  Once there, it's rustic accommodations/food.  Lots of outdoorsy stuff...hikes, kayaking, polar plunges, beaches that look like you are in French Polynesia (with 40 degree water temps).

It sits directly atop my bucket list, but my wife has zero interest in going and it's not remotely kid friendly.

I think Trondheim is the biggest city in that desolate area of Norway.

Rick Steves covers exploring the other parts of Norway, and maybe in lieu of 3 flights, a scenic train ride would be just as quick from a place like Oslo.

I don’t know if this should go in the travel thread but I’m at Beech Mountain right now at the Land of Oz.  It was legit. There are people here with Wizard of Oz arm sleeves all over the place. It felt like we were actually in the movie, even though I had a Fing stroller with 2 kids that I had to take through a tilted house that went through a twister 😡  @HazletonEagle I’m with Joe Marino and his wife and daughter. He no longer works with TDN but is there anything you’d like me to ask him for you?

Close to Tennessee right above a town called Banner Elk. About 15 minutes from Boone where App State is. They actually were at home yesterday against ECU and there were tailgates and mobs everywhere.

You're going to have a blast. Such a beautiful place

When you went, did you accidentally try to pack a smorgasboard of handcrafted ice deeldoes into your carry-on, only to have them melt on the plane ride home all over your rubber deeldoes and tighty whities?

Great time to go.  Still some pretty good weather (for Iceland) and a chance to see the Northern Lights.

when our plane approached for landing in iceland, it bounced off the runway twice...really hard....then went back up in the air. we were all scared sheetless. pilot comes on & didn't really explain much...blah, blah, landing aborted...blah. blah...wind near runway area..blah, blah. we all thought we were going to die. plane then circled around. it took around 15 minutes...made a 2nd approach & actually landed this time. longest 15 minutes of my life & i spent most of it praying.

so that's how my iceland trip started!  :excited:

What's your itinerary again in Iceland?

For those of you ever renting a car in the Los Angeles area, the cheapest gas (outside of a Costco membership) are some gas stations in Artesia, in the South Bay area.  I was out there for the Eagles game and I researched a lot and found $4.79/gallon.  There was basically nothing else under $5/gallon.  Most stations had $6/gallon or more.

WHat do you guys consider to be the best bars in airports?

I tell out-of-towners to stop by Chickies & Petes if they are flying out of Philadelphia.  I use BWI the most, but don't have a particular bar, since most of my flights are morning ones.

I have heard that One Flew South in Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta is maybe the best airport bar in the US.

I usually just seek out the closest bar to my gate. Once I was in Des Moines having vodka and oj and couldn't hear any of PA calls and I was the last one to board that little jet.  So embarrassing.

Leaving for the Dominican next week and I have a 6am to EWR then 8:30am to SDQ.  I probably won't have time for a 5am cocktail in Philly, will likely wait 'til I get to Newark.  I hate flying sober.

Had a 16 day trip to the Holy Land and 7 churches in Turkey.....had to be canceled due to the war.

I don't use PHL often anymore, but absolutely loved Chickie's & Pete's during a layover there several years back.  Drinking too much there almost caused me to miss boarding for a 9hr transatlantic.

United Polaris Lounge at my home airport at EWR has been my favorite airport experience lately.  Can only get in for a United long haul international flight, but it's a great setup.  No crowds, overflowing and varied cocktails, some premium wine, and decent food.  They also have an invitation based steakhouse called Classified...kind of a fun vibe, but probably better just to hang out at the lounge.

Some of the Caribbean airports have the best dive bars...

Back from the Dominican.  My 1st time out of the US. Nephew got married. This gated estate they were on was absolutely stunning. We stayed a few minutes away in the town of Cabrera which is the north end of the island.  Flew into Santo Domingo on the south end so it was almost a 3 hr trip. We rented a car and I would not recommend doing this. We researched and had directions but still got off course. It was wild with all the motor scooter’s and trucks that were old and looked like their load would fall over at any moment. Most of the drive was highway and very scenic.

Cabrera was a safe town. We walked to dinner the first night.  A little noisy  but that’s the culture . Lots of dogs everywhere and cattle. Our Airbnb was a 2 bedroom apt fully functional, clean, 2 balconies and a pool on the roof. 4 nights under $500 total. Owner lived on 1st floor. Super host.  We did lose electricity the 1st night for a few hours. Water was lukewarm but who wants a hot shower in that tropical climate.

It was called Casa Lambi.

This is Casa Kimball. The gated estate with 3 mansions, fully staffed, just awesome.  This wedding was easily in the 6 figures-definitely had a vikas feel.  We were provided transportation for all the events.  A welcome party Friday night. With dancers.  The wedding on Saturday. Fire dancers and great music and food.  Pool party and bbq on Sunday.
