There are lots of possible reasons he registered Republican. He may not have had any real stance at the time he registered or was just ignorant of politics in general at first. Maybe he was a "never-trumper."

Clearly he was aiming at Trump, though. That's all we know.

Has anything been said about the follow on shots? I wonder if he was shooting more rounds at President Trump, or was it more 'mass shooting' style aimed at killing other people who were there? 

I've watched the video of the shooting a few times and haven't quite picked out the counter-sniper's shot yet. I would assume that the counter snipers would be shooting a .50 caliber or maybe .308/7.62. So the sound should be noticeably different.  

Side note, when I first heard the shots, I said that it didn't sound like a large caliber, I was guessing that it was a .22. I was right, it was just a very high powered .22 (.223 or 5.56).
