The thing that is supremely concerning is that the method for doing this was so breathtakingly stupid that it caught everyone off guard. Calculating tariffs by simply dividing the trade deficit by the level of imports is completely insane, and it lead to tariff levels that make ZERO sense. It's pretty clear they just asked Chat GPT to come up with this. Add on that we are putting tariffs on uninhabited islands, or not realizing Gibraltar isn't an independent country, and it has been hammered home for a broader audience -- this administration is comprised of complete morons. Hell, I haven't been shy calling these people idiots, and this was even dumber than I expected. The most common refrain among my peers is wondering how Bessent actually signed off on this. Clearly fealty to the mad king overrules all common sense. Which means people know expect this to get worse (see Trump's comments on China this morning).

April 4Apr 4 One thing not getting enough attention -- this recession is going to be worse than people think. The lower end consumer has been in the toilet for 18-24 months since the COVID stimulus ran out. The entire economy has been carried by the higher end. Well, collapsing market = negative wealth effect and higher income gonna pull back. Add on increasing prices, and this could be really bad.
