Mystic Camp did not allow phones or technology.

Flash flood warnings were issued early Friday morning from what I can tell.

Tragic situation. With what I see the camp itself appears most at fault, either not seeing or ignoring the warning.

The weather reports didn't expect the level of rain to cause this sort of flooding. But forecasts for localized rain are ... Well, best guesses.

NWS issued a flash flood watch for Kerr County at 1:45 p.m. on July 3, followed by warnings at 1 a.m. and a flash flood emergency at 4:03 a.m. on July 4. (per grok fwiw)

I'm curious if this will impact Florida. My understanding is that tourism is part of the reason they can afford no income tax.

It is certainly a good thing that other countries are spending more on defense but there is more to it than that. There is no debate that Trump has weakened NATO.

Have the other NATO countries who actually are the prime beneficiaries of NATO done anything to weaken the alliance?

Any decrease in tourism for the rest of florida is probably being made up for by Disney. They just keep pulling in more people.

Was just reading the other day, Disney has plans to build 3 new parks in florida between now and 2045. 1 major park, and 2 more minor parks. As well as more resorts.

Jesus didn't they just open Mario World or something like that? How many park themed could you possibly do? Wild.

Trump has made it clear that he doesn't view NATO commitments with the same firmness that previous administrations have.

When the largest and strongest backer of NATO is offering weak support, it weakens the alliance more from within than any other single member let alone enemy states like Russia could.

Apparently theres no guarantee that they happen. But they have some plan written where its a possibility... First ones would be in around the year 2030.

I dont know anything about a mario world. We were just at disney in March. Maybe Universal has that?

But Disney is doing a ton building new worlds in their parks as we speak. Now are considering 3 entire new parks. It is wild to think of the money they spend. But, it keeps the people coming back to see whats changed I guess.

Oh just wait til your kids are older. After this next one, we'll have had 5 trips to Disney (including one in cali) in just over 3 years. And 3 of those trips of those were 10 day tickets.

I'd guess 2030 would be too early for a whole new park but we'll see.

https://www.disneytouristblog.com/fifth-theme-park-disney-world-approved-2045-plan/

Heres some of the gossip with the exciting points pulled from the blog above.

In the 2045 Comprehensive Plan, the CFTOD has also approved a fifth major theme park at Walt Disney World. This is an increase in the allowed maximum from a 2010 plan, formalizing what was penciled into the 2020 plan. This 5th gate is approved beginning in 2035, and running through the conclusion of the plan in 2045.

The 2045 Comprehensive Plan views a major theme park as being on the scale of Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom, with an estimated size of approximately 445 acres. There are currently 4 major theme parks at Walt Disney World (the ones listed above).

In addition to a single major theme park allocated in the comprehensive plan, the plan allows for two more minor theme parks. A minor theme park would be smaller or more niche experience, with a projected land area of around 147 acres. There are currently 3 minor theme parks at Walt Disney World: Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, and ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The window for the first minor park opens in 2030, with a second minor park being on the table starting in 2040.

Essentially, what the 2045 Comprehensive Plan is accomplishing is laying the groundwork for new minor or major theme parks in its land use plan. Although Disney may not be considering such plans today, if the business environment changes in the future such that new parks are deemed necessary, they can be built without spending another half-decade on rewriting the rulebook

And here are numbers that speak to my sort of tongue in cheek point about disney making up for any decrease in tourism throughout the rest of florida. The numbers are staggering. Theyre talking about having close to 500,000 people on disney world property each day. Up from the current 205-307k.

One way or another, though, the CFTOD does expect Walt Disney World’s daytime visitor count to increase dramatically. Based on current attendance and occupancy numbers, the district estimates that the "functional” daytime population of Walt Disney World is between 205,000 and 307,000, whereas that number is expected to balloon to 335,000 to 475,000 by 2045–and the bulk of that growth will occur in the final 10 years of the plan (the 2035 range is 243,000 to 366,000).

NATO is a key pillar in allowing the US to control the world.

The cuts are more likely to affect the longer term and broader capabilities at this point. You wouldn’t think a specific local event in the near term to be any different. None the less, I will still blame It Hurts.

I think it's fair to blame the stupidest people in the country for overall state of things. Which is bad and heading towards worse.

Regarding Texas, part of the issue was probably timing. Flash flood warnings came in overnight and flooding started before dawn. Had this all happened 6-12 hours later the outcome may have been different.

As Floods Hit, Key Roles Were Vacant at Weather Service Offices in Texas - The New York Times

In an interview, Rob Kelly, the Kerr County judge and its most senior elected official, said the county did not have a warning system because such systems are expensive, and local residents are resistant to new spending.

"Taxpayers won’t pay for it,” Mr. Kelly said. Asked if people might reconsider in light of the catastrophe, he said, "I don’t know.”

The National Weather Service’s San Angelo office, which is responsible for some of the areas hit hardest by Friday’s flooding, was missing a senior hydrologist, staff forecaster and meteorologist in charge, according to Tom Fahy, the legislative director for the National Weather Service Employees Organization, the union that represents Weather Service workers.

The Weather Service’s nearby San Antonio office, which covers other areas hit by the floods, also had significant vacancies, including a warning coordination meteorologist and science officer, Mr. Fahy said. Staff members in those positions are meant to work with local emergency managers to plan for floods, including when and how to warn local residents and help them evacuate.
