Riley Reiff is about to be cut

Yeah but he has no familiarity with the playbook or his teammates.  More directly,  he comes with a $13 million dollar cap hit this year. He won't restructure to stay with Minnesota so I can't imagine he'll take $4 million to come here.

Genuinely don't know why they've kept Mailata on the team the last 3 years if he can't get a shot now.

The funny thing is that the two guys Mailata compares best to, Jason Peters and Alejandro Vilanueva, both became all pro left tackles, but neither guy was ever expected to play until injuries forced their respective teams to put them on the field. In both cases, the coaches of their teams had to take a risk in putting a physically gifted, but raw, prospect on the field without really knowing what the outcome would be.

The year that Villanueva first saw action he wasn't even a lock to make the roster, and two guys had to get injured before he saw the field.

Sometimes it's not about the player, it's about the coach having the stones to put the guy on the field.

Fair enough.

If only Howie managed the cap better.  We could make a make a move to fix the issue with a one year deal.  (and pick up comp pickzzzzz when he leaves!!!!!)

Villanueva was never voted to be an all pro and actually still was horrible even after being named the starter at left Tackle. He eventually got better and became a pro bowler. Peters did not take over because of injuries he made his name on special teams and the bills right Tackle. The left Tackle and the whole line played poorly  so they reshuffled the line and put Peters on the left side and became a pro bowler and a second team all pro. 2 different paths and that's a very rare occurrence not the norm.

A coach having no choice like in the Villanueva situation is not stones

An alternative is to realize that this season is falling off the cliff, before it has even began. In preparation for the next year's financial armagedon trade away what we can for future draft picks. I am not advocating to completely tank the season...but it is an option that should be considered at some point. Especially with the Injury BUG hitting the starters. I am perfectly ok to watch what the rookies have got, especially since we had no preseason. Please don't kill me!!! LOL

They are cap strapped as it is. They CAN’T pay him more.

That’s ridiculous, of course they can. There’s always a way.

They aren't even cash strapped either. They have cap space they just want to role it over due to their mess next year.

That’s the point, they are in cap trouble NEXT year which means they can’t afford to keep handing out money this year or it reduces what they can roll over to next season.

Ok, tell me your plan for getting out from being $50M+ over the cap next season. One way to take a bite out of it is to roll over as much money as possible from this year, meaning they need to conserve all the space on this year’s cap that they can.

That said, regardless of the money, Peters can F off with this nonsense. He JUST agreed to a contract, knowing full well there was always a chance he could be shifted back to tackle if needed. I guarantee that nowhere in his contract does it specify that he has to play guard.

Good point.  Coaches are too scared to play the young players, partly to protect their own job.  LT is too important a position and the down side is huge if something goes wrong.  Young players need game experience to develop.  Too many of them fall thru in the absence of PT and game experience.

Doug shows his daring side in making unconventional calls.  Let's see if he would make that bold call of playing a young LT this season.
