I'd heard the name but wasn't familiar with him until this. The narrative I'm hearing and reading is that he was a person who was an intellectual and debated people from the opposing ideological viewpoint on the issues. I'll push back on that and say I don't see him as someone who "debated" in a genuine sense, at all. To me, he came off as arrogant and condescending towards people.

At the Utah event, he said at the beginning "We're going to be here for 2 hours and we'll see what the best libs in Utah have to offer." Then, in the clip of the exchange he had with the questioner immediately before the shooting, he answered the question of how many mass shootings have been perpetrated by transgender people, he said "Too many" and when corrected that the answer is 5, the follow-up question was "5 out of how many mass shootings in total", and he replied "Gang related or not gang related?"

Gotta say, none of that comes across as an intellectual exercise in debating issues; both of his answers were obtuse and confrontational. Most of the clips I've watched of him show me that he was not a uniter or looking for intelligent discourse; rather he was a MAGA activist with an agenda to deepen a wedge between people.

None of this means a person deserves to be shot. I do think, however, there is a misrepresentation of who and what he actually was.
