EMB Blog: 2025 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

I've been as critical of AJ as anyone, but this latest Twitch situation doesn't really bother me.

  1. It didn't seem planned / intentional. He was playing a video game and basically having a conversation with the guy. Answering questions. For the first time, it didn't seem contrived.

  2. This time, it's actually warranted. The offense was pure garbage this week. And these coaches suck if they can't manufacture ways to get him the ball more than twice in a game. Especially a game where we can't score otherwise.

Now, his stupid Insta post after a great game and win vs Minnesota was completely moronic and an A-hole move.

I don't love this, but I'm not gonna kill him for yucking it up with a guy that he is friends with....especially after the way the offense looked this week.

Feed AJ the ball and all is well......oh wait, the QB sucks at that.

Ojomo did not affect the 4th and short play, at least not physically, though he called it out. Here he is lined up on the inside shoulder of the LG. Carter is head up on the RG.

Ojomo is doubled by the LG and C. Carter bull rushes the RG. The RT gives him a look and...

Carter sheds the RG, Phillips drives the TE back into the path of the RG. Blankenship is coming up.

Phillips and Carter close on the RB, who has nowhere to go.

And the ball is out.

In fairness to Ojomo, when he called out the play, it may have affected the decision-making of the RB. It may also have caused Carter to cross the face of the center, forcing the cutback. Pretty impressive to cross the face of the blocker and then shed him to that same side - crossing over and then crossing back. The TE was no match for Phillips.

Thanks for posting this. Calling it out was probably the most important thing that he did. This was Jacobs' comment on it:

Constant crying like a bish on social media is never warranted for a grown man. Let's get that straight

And I love AJ. I don't want him gone. It sucks we can't get everyone 10 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs. Maybe that will come eventually.

But someone needs to connect the dots for me between AJs whining and actual improvements on the field--how does any of this actually help the Eagles?? That's not the way to solve problems and never has been

Will be better if the Bills win it?

A defense should never be able to wipe out both of your top 2 weapons. At least not regularly.

Any defense can focus their efforts on taking out one guy, but for this team to constantly have Saquon and AJ erased from practically every game, that's clear incompetence on the coaching.

Also he’s worked with hurts before at bama. Add on he might be a **** head coach but he has done really good work with offenses and QBs in the past. Josh Allen came out of Wyoming with a big arm and less than stellar accuracy. After a couple years, he helped develop Allen into what we’ve seen today. Before this season, daboll was the only one to be able to Maximize Daniel jones even if for one year. Then he identified Dart for the giants based off reports. I don’t love running dart like he did but dart was playing at a really good level considering their OL and weapons. So he’s not some incompetent moron, just a bad head coach

The classic type that the Eagles need: someone who wasn't a good HC so may not have HC aspirations (at least until rebuilding reputation a couple years) but who was a good position coach and coordinator. I doubt they do it though.

I can't find it, but last week someone wondered why he wasn't on the Eagles website on their official list of transactions after it happened. Just odd.

You don't really need coveted and innovative, you really just need fit. I think people have the wrong idea. Take a look at the Ravens offensive ranks for a bit, on a site like Pro Football Reference. You'll notice that in a lot of recent seasons they hover around top 10 with a few different offensive coordinators, including one we know pretty well.

I've said it before but I think if you want to continue with Hurts' style (I don't, but some people do), a guy like Darrel Bevell makes a lot of sense. 55 so older than a lot of HC hires these days which trend high 30's low 40's, worked with Russell Wilson in Seattle, coached in the NFL for 22 years, that kind of thing. Origin is Marshawn Lynch era Seahawks with efficient pass offense, strong running game, and the obviously secondary strong Legion of Boom. Sound familiar?

I think the reason is because less and less older OCs are being hired period, because teams are trying to get young mainstays at head coach. But you can use that to your advantage, the same way you can with Fangio.

the thing with fangio is there’s more older defensive coaches that aren’t getting hired because teams want innovative young offensive head coaches. The new younger coordinators coming in as OC. Imo why guys like Spags and fangio stay in their perspective jobs longer as they are defensive coaches and less owners hiring defensive minded coaches particularly older defensive minded coaches. So fangio and spags are more than OK being essentially the de facto head coach of their defenses.

The problem with not going with young and innovative and solely older fit hire OC is that nearly every beat writer has alluded to lurie wanting to be innovative on offense and cutting edge of the next big thing on offense. Usually those older offensive coordinators are not that. I believe berman did a story on Lurie and what he was looking for after he fired Doug pederson mentioning this.

Also, I think you’re picking a couple of teams that did have success. I think there’s also teams that did it the way and weren’t successful. Imo the ravens are successful due to partially their OC but more cause Lamar is a top 5 Qb and mvp when healthy. It’s like Buffalo with Josh Allen. Most OCs look really good with top 5 mvp QBs. This isn’t a slight to Jalen. He’s great in big games and is a top 5-8 QB in this league. But imo those two are on a different tier.

As for the Seahawks, it was over a decade ago. The league changes. the Seahawks moved away from since firing Carroll. They hired another defensive coach but hired a young OC in Kubiak, who is maximizing Darnold and the offense. Who’s likely to leave.

You can hire an older OC who’s a fit, but the current teams doing it are ravens, chargers, broncos, raiders and lions. Payton is the offensive minded coaches and really in control of it so less about their OC. Sirianni isn’t that as a HC. Harbaugh has Greg Roman calling plays. But they’ve had this open dialogue relationship when calling plays for a while since he was with the niners. Campbell just took overplay calling duties due to his issues with their success. Raiders are a disaster with chip. So it’s the ravens and chargers as that team where it really is about the OC being older and fit. And I’d argue chargers it’s a very rare dynamic of harbaugh and roman being together in 2 different stops and how they run that offense.

Reflecting on the AJ Brown stuff over the past 24 hours, I can relate professionally right now. I get it.

It is hard to go to work, to a job you know you can do really well, and effectively exist on occasional hits of things you enjoy and spending the rest of the time watching the party happen elsewhere. Mutual success is great, but not long term satisfying for anyone who is very competitive. The fact he's at worst, made weak comments online/in media things or not had ideal body language, suggests someone who as a professional knows their role, has accepted this is now his lot for the season, but sometimes, frustration naturally pops out, because he is a WR1 effectively running sprints and blocking when on the field. It's not inspiring is it?

We're all human but no one truly knows what he's thinking. The sign of a professional.

He’s young enough that if he did well with the offense (especially seeing how it wasn’t living up to expectations in 2023 and so far 2025) that would likely get considerations again down the road. If he had success here, i think like McDaniels he’d get another shot. Heck McDaniels failed 2 times and still mentioned for HC jobs. I’m guessing his work with Maye probably gets him another interview or two

I’ve had this thought process for awhile. I feel like the word "distraction” has become to sports conversation, what the word race-ism has become to political conversation. It doesn’t matter if it’s being used accurately, people throw it out because it’s an attention getting buzz word used for shock value. To me, a distraction is something that does or can potentially cause players to lose focus on their preparation, or during a game.

A family member dealing with a cancer scare can be a distraction. Area fires threatening your home and livelihood can be a distraction. An actual internal feud between players can be a distraction. I don’t see evidence that AJ’s comments have affected players in preparation or a game. Let’s face it, the offense, aside from the last Giants game, has looked the same all season. Periods of moving the ball ok mixed in with long stretches of 3 and outs, and it’s been like that since before AJ said anything.

I’d be OK healthy scratching Brown for a game. Maybe that wouldn’t stop him from being a whiny €unt but it sets a good tone for the rest of the team

People have come over the years to kind of just accept cliches as truth even when they aren't, without even thinking about whether they make logical sense. Like Jordan Mailata being asked two questions per week about AJ Brown at his locker that take 10 seconds to answer apiece, in the middle of a dozen other questions... somehow is going to make him play worse this Sunday against the Lions. Or any other player. It's one of the most overused sports cliches since I've been alive. I remember years back people wanted McNabb to postpone his wedding because it would be a distraction. Like what in the F are we talking about. That is when I knew that term had jumped the shark. These are grown ass men and professionals who've been answering thousands of questions every year of all types since college. And they've been one of the most successful teams since AJ has been here. People need to think for themselves instead of just blindly following cliches like sheep.

Coaches and players get other topics asked about a lot. Every year Siri's had lots of questions about the offensive coordinator, Hurts, the passing game, questioning his game decisions. If a few questions about a WR tweet cause a professional head coach and organization such distraction that they can't perform, then they have bigger problems.

Frankly, I think it's more of a distraction to the team that they are required to do so many press conferences. Head coach and QB immediately after a game, players in the locker room. Then several press conferences throughout the week. They should be preparing for the game, not doing all that media. Then there's the radio and podcast interviews on top of that. Every team deals with it, but I think it's dumb they have to do so much when they should be doing their job.

That’s a big part of why I think this is so overblown. Players generally don’t like talking to the media anyway, but it is a requirement that some of their time has to go towards making themselves available, so whether they’re getting questions about football, AJ’s tweets, quiche recipes, or pagan witchcraft, they gotta deal with it. I just can’t see questions on Monday causing players to lose focus in practice on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Eagles own social media team bug them every week to make stupid trendy videos. The team has plenty of things to keep them distracted, but they're professionals.

Damnit Dan Campbell! You're the enemy this week! I'm supposed to hate you, and you make it hard by being cool!

Seriously though, as much as I want a repeat, if we somehow don't go back, I'd be happy to see the Lions break thru.

Same. I like Campbell, and if it can't be the Eagles in the SB I want to see the Lions. If it can't be us, Lions Bills would be cool because one of them would win their first SB.

I think most of us respect the Lions and Campbell. That doesn't mean I don't want to see them destroyed this weekend. They're coming into our house, coming for our honors, coming for our glory. They can nod respectively all they want but they are coming here to rob us and steal everything. Monday, I'll be back to respecting them but, Sunday, they need to be put down and put down hard. They stepping up on us and it's time to beat them down.

It's time to unleash the beast. Time to inflict maximum pain. Time to defend our field, defend our house, defend our city. This conference belongs to us and it's time to serve notice and show dominance. Lions, Bears, it don't matter, we're taking what's ours.

Let loose the dogs of war and we'll deal with the carnage on Monday.

I think there's a good chance Howie trades Brown this offseason, but the comments won't be the primary reason, rather, they'll just tip the scales.

Brown turns 29, and most WRs peak around 28.

He seems to have lost a step, he doesn't get consistent separation and that won't get better. But his value would still be high on the trade market.

Now I think Patullo and Siri have been in denial, they need to scheme Brown open so he can rack up RAC, but if you watch him run routes compared to Smith, it's night and day. Smith could put up huge numbers if they wanted to force feed him the ball.

The other problem is there is far more pressure on Hurts in the pocket this year, if Brown isn't getting separation, the throws have to be close to perfect for him to make plays and avoid interceptions. That's harder to do when there's a man in your face or you're moving around the pocket. So when you combine the lack of separation and the lack of comfort by Hurts standing in the pocket and making throws to a "covered" Brown, that explains a lot of the lack of production. The way to deal with this is stop sending Brown on go routes on a regular basis and throw more slants, screens, etc. where he can catch the ball and use his power to run for extra yards and Hurts can get rid of the ball quickly.
