Refs were terrible yet again for both teams. Eagles specifically the Johnson hold was ticky tack and the low block penalty because Brown fell was ridiculous.

I don't like how they handled the Rock Ya-Sin DPI at the end - you can't go the whole game letting them play and then tighten up at the 2 minute warning. What are we doing here, trying to make people crazy?

Good news. I got an email back from VABeach_Eagle, he is ok. He has been tending to his mother's health as she's been in the hospital, and exhausted lately. He says he will be more available to log on

I've said it a bunch of times, it's type mismatch combined with offseason install failures. You have a first year OC that made some improper offseason installs, which are notoriously challenging to fix mid-season. Combine this with Sirianni's scheme lineage being a timing based offense with prototype being Phillip Rivers (SD/IND connection), and it's a mismatch between him and Hurts.

This is also why our OCs constantly get plucked, league realizes anyone who makes it work here has to rectify this situation, so hiring young works against us. We either have to home grow someone, or get someone that other people don't want. And the former means growing pains.

If you want a guy who won't leave, hire Brian Daboll. No one's ever gonna go near that dude again as a head coach, he's a freaking disaster.

Buffalo will be a real intersting game because they are not going up there and winning scoring 10-16 points.

Well, the Lions scored 9 points.

Players who need to be paid either right after next season or prior to

Jalen Carter

Jordan Davis

Quinyon Mitchell

Cooper Dejean

Nakobe Dean

Jaelen Phillips

Dallas Goedert

Nolan Smith

Jalyx Hunt

Reed Blankenship

Moro Ojomo

Tank Bigsby

Players we’re definitely going to pay

Jalen Carter

Quinyon Mitchell

Every other name on the first list is completely up in the air.

Disagree with DeJean being up in the air. Lurie loves him. Fangio loves him. He’s definitely getting paid.

The Eagles got a hand on someone at 7 yards penalty call early then Detroit grabbed and was handsy all night before the ball and after 5 yards. I'm 100% fine with the late call.

Eagles should have had 3 or more calls for defensive holding, Lions about 10.

I don't know a ton about him schematically other than him getting absolutely slapped by the Eagles, and Indiana Jones absolutely going off as soon as he left, but if Daboll can legitimately have schematic ability and work fine when he's not the head coach, and the team agrees, then I wouldn't be against it. The key really is stability though.

Although the narrative about him trying to sacrifice Dart is problematic and players might not trust him for a while, Nick is paid to rectify those kind of problems.

Thoughts:

1) GB and Det were both windy conditions, which takes away the deep pass (see the throw to Barkley down the sideline, normally that's a throw Hurts hits 9 of 10 times), so both the defensive performance should be discounted and the offense given a mulligan.

2) AJ needs to shut up, what stood out is how little separation he gets these days, throws have to be perfect and that's tough against good defenses in bad conditions (ask Goff!). He's still starter caliber, but will need more help from play design to get space for YAC. That PI was an awful call at the end of the game, not that Goff was going to drive 70 yards for a TD with a minute left, but still . . .

3) Smith had one of his worst games, dropped one, didn't come up with some contested throws.

4) O-Line is struggling, Mailata is off, Dickerson is hurting, is struggling to get knee bend and leverage, Jurgens and Lane injured again. This is the biggest problem on offense, they can't run consistently, teams don't respect play action, and Hurts has to play superman to move the ball. Going for 4th and 1 was stupid, you could see the OL wasn't getting any push - sometimes you have to play it safe. Kendall not stepping up the second half is a disappointment, and with Lane out, can't use Fred as blocking TE. OL high on Howie's shopping list.

5) Det is more explosive on offense, Gibbs and Williams have the quicks the Eagle skill players lack, Goedert has reached the "Chad Lewis" point of his career (smart TE who gets open but ain't running away from anyone), Brown is more of a power possession WR, Smith is fast but not explosive, depends more on route running. Shipley is only explosive skill player, Grisby nice combination of burst and power. Barkley has great top end speed, but not as quick as Gibbs. Think receiving TE, dynamic 3rd WR will be on Howie's shopping list this spring.

6) Adoree Jackson has really stepped up, not pro bowl material, but no longer a glaring liability. Wonder if Dean can pass a drug test b/c he looks faster and more explosive - see his coverage down the sideline - coverage was his weakness. Phillips is a revelation, but wait for Smith to get into game shape. Biggest weakness is probably depth behind Davis and Carter.

7) Just win baby. This offense is good enough in normal conditions, but don't expect them to put 30 on anyone with this OL. Barkley may not be as explosive as last season, but he hasn't slipped that much - no where to run baby, no where to hide. And without the running threat, they need to focus on upgrading the passing attack. But the way the defense is playing, 20-25 points a game can get you a SB.

I don’t think Howie traded for Phillips with the full intent to re-sign him. Worst case rental, best case core player. He’s sure as hell is looking like the latter. If he keeps this up, he’ll be back. Not even a question. Total different level than Sweat.

Goedert coming back this season might have been one of the most important decisions they could have made in the offseason. Imagine this TE room without him.

Once again quitting on plays.

I can't tell you how bad Hurts was yesterday but its a C- range game. He was not the problem.

How do you judge a QB forced to play a bunch offense with WRs running wide and deep in swirling winds?

How can you throw a quick out if it takes 2 seconds for your WR to get to the out part of the field?

STOP high school harry crap against 5+ fronts!!!

The penalties, play calls, and personnel usage are 100% coaching and must get better.

Maybe Hurts has a C+ or B- game without all the drops and stupid penalties.

The Mailata holding was so stupid. What did he think he was doing?

Cooper can't stay still on a tush push as a pusher?

Trott has to hold on a fair catch?

So sloppy!

Yeah the tight formations have to go, they're awful for passing right now and they cause too much clutter for running plays.

The stubborn play calling really needs to end, if we clearly can't run up the gut we need to abandon those in a timely manner, same with the snoopy

Nope - don't want to do that.

Hurts isn't a timing QB and we also can't run the ball, so the result is that he has to play superman. If we had a strong timing based operation, we could be okay, but we don't, so there's a ton of trying to extend plays and that's not working very well either with the decline of AJ Brown's separation and the unwillingness to throw contested balls as much. The scheme just doesn't match up very well.

If he can stay healthy, he's getting resigned here or at the very least it looks like we are getting that 3rd back.

Kinda ready to move on from the high priced offense.

I've been defending him but it did look like he slowed down when he didn't think he was getting the ball

Zero chance Howie lets the player we saw the last 2 games walk out the building. He gets hurt again? Sure, maybe he walks. He stays healthy and plays like this? No chance. Apples to oranges compared to Milton Williams, who had Jalen Carter in front of him and a similar quality player behind him on a 7th round contract.

This is kind of the downside of Howie mortgaging the cap to the hilt - you can squeeze more high paid players on the roster, but it's tough to move on.

I don't think Nolan is the prototype base edge, he just happens to punch well above his weight. Jalyx, yes.

Agree. But I don't think it's far fetched to add 15lbs this offseason

There were a couple of overthrown passes, especially the one to a wide open Barkley that would have been a TD. Was it the wind, was he rushed, just seems he was a bit off with throws.

Campbell looks like he has the frame to add more weight, which will be helpful stacking OLmen and running through trash - essentially the things Nakobe is better at now with a more compact frame.

TIFWIW

The right weight means you are more likely to hold up on the edge against the run. Trading Campbell, sure, but that's pretty far out there in the timeline - what did Nakobe do as a rookie?

I think Campbell with be a multiple time all pro at LB or edge. Wherever he settles in.

Nolan Smith is a possible occasional pro bowler but he's not compiling sacks even when healthy this year and is injury prone.

When contracts come up, he's a guy id be afraid to overpay. And when he goes and plays well elsewhere, I'd be at peace with that decision still.

Mhm. Like I said I just don't think they match up well with each other though. Frankly, Hurts is the player so he needs to work within the scheme. It looks like to me that they have a soft player approach and it's causing them a lot of pain, coaching staff needs to be more strict. I suspect this comes from the pivot towards 'Emotional Intelligence' that Howie and Lurie famously championed. That pivot is a good thing, but there has to be a balance, otherwise you end up not pushing your players enough.

And one more thing.

I NEVER want to see the offense sitting in the pre-season again unless we're on a third year coordinator. They don't deserve to sit, they need to practice until they get it right, rather than being coddled constantly. If they figured out some of the schematic issues at the beginning of PRESEASON, they would have still had some time to fix it via emergency installs!
