You all are such good, moral people with unassailable judgement so tell me how you'd handle a particular situation.  I was in a Walmart today when a lady with a younger (maybe 4 or 5 year old) child approached me.  She was not a native english speaker and had a paper with some words written on it essentially asking for $25 to help "feed her child".  I told her I didn't have any cash so she held up a pair of $11 Walmart kids shoes and asked if I could help buy those.  I thought for a second then told her to give me the shoes, let me finish my shopping, then I'd pay for them and give them to her up front when I was done.  A little further down the aisle another woman approached me and asked to speak to me for a second.  Being the nice guy I am I told her sure.  She then told me that the 1st woman was scamming me, that she'd been watch her approach other people with the same story and that the manager was coming to run her out of the store.  I was a bit taken back, thanked her for telling me that then walked away.  Not sure how to handle the situation I kept on shopping and thinking.  I finally decided that, the shoes were only $11 so if she was up front when I got up there I was going to buy the shoes and give them to her anyway just in case she really was in need.  What would you have done?  Am I just an easy target?

You may be an easy target but so am I.  I would have done the same thing.  One time there was a guy standing on the corner holding a sign for a local business on a cold day ankle deep in snow.  I noticed he had no gloves so I ran into Target, got him a pair of gloves, and gave them to him on my way out.

Just for fun I would have said "Get a job".

Or ask her if she wants the shoes badly enough to plant tulips in the parking lot?

Don't worry about any of that Omega. It's like Telsa once said...it's not what you got, it's what you give.

Did whatever you gave wipe you out or was it worth more in how you felt?

Now i gotta go f around more in TATE.

Hippy talk.

You should have told her you'll give her a Gorilla mask behind the dumpster and $50.  The kid can stand guard for an extra $10

Oh I didn't actually give anything.  I walked around up front looking for her for a little while and she was nowhere to be found, so I just stuck the shoes in a box of Three Musketeers next to the register.

You actually DID do something.......

By sticking the shoes in a Box of 3 musketeers near the register....... You gave some hapless Clark the task of finding out where the shoes are supposed to be.

You created a job !!!!

I wasn't sure where to post this so I thought here would do. It's going to be a pretty long one

On Thursday night my aunt and mum got a call from my grandfather who had fallen over in his garden and couldn't get back up. He needed someone to go help him because he was stuck on the ground so I went with my mum. It was a pretty warm day and he was at the doctors earlier that day for a stomach bug. The doc had said he was pretty dehydrated so we thought he may have fainted.

He lives about an hour away so we got there, managed to get him inside and the plan was to take him back to my mums place because there was no way he could be alone. He kept arguing that he wanted to stay but we got him into the car eventually and drove him there.

He stayed at my aunts house the night and I went over to babysit him and my grandmother on the Friday. My grandmother fell and injured her back about 6 months back and has been living at my parents house while she recovers. My aunt and parents live in the same street so it's nice and close and easy to go back and forth. We've been trying to convince him to move but he has refused. He spent most of the day in bed, looked and sounded pretty good.

My mum went out for a friends birthday dinner and I went to get some dinner for myself, my dad and my aunt while my grandparents had something mum had made them. We're eating dinner when all of a sudden we hear a giant thud.

My aunt goes to check on my grandfather who had gone to the bathroom but is not responding. I try to open the door but it won't open. I can get it open just enough to look in and I can see he is face down and isn't moving. I run to grab a phone and call an ambulance. They're asking me the basic questions like address, incident, age and if he is breathing. As I'm talking to them I start to see blood come from under the door and it's like a horror movie. They ask if there is a way to get the door off and my dad has gone home to look for something to get the door off the hinges. I run to their house to see if he has and he can't find his saw. They ask if he is breathing so I sprint back to my aunts house and we still have no idea. We can start to hear like a snoring/gargling noise but no words and can't see his body moving through the door. My dad turns up shortly after with a crowbar and I can slide the door off. He is laying down face first in a pool of blood and the person on the other line says not to move him. They ask if I can time his breathing so I hand the phone to my aunt who has done a first aid course and I go to my grandmother who's wailing that he is dead.

Not long after two paramedics turn up and they ask if someone can come and help roll him. I go in and have to try and turn his head. Once I do I get a look at his face and eyes which is an absolute mess and something I don't know if I'll forget. He was covered in blood, I could see bone and his eyes looked like they weren't still here. The paramedics took over and as I walk up the hall the fire brigade and some more paramedics have arrived. I help them clear a path to be able to get him out by moving a table and they ask my aunt for his meds so I go into the room with my grandmother and close the door.

I was in there with her for what felt like an eternity and she kept wanting to go see him. I stayed with her in there because a) his face is mangled and b) they needed room to work. Meanwhile my mum had called and I told her she needed to come back as he had fallen and I had no idea what was happening. After they eventually cleared out I came out of the room to hear one of the paramedics say to my aunt 8/10 times the incident is fatal and the other 2 requires permanent care. He also said we needed to come to the hospital right away so we can make any decisions.

I confirmed with my aunt what he had said to her. He believed he had bleeding on the brain that was previously there and it caused him to pass out. Mum came back home, my dad stayed with my grandmother, I cleaned some of the blood off and then went to the hospital with mum, my aunt and my godmother who dropped mum off home from the dinner. We get a call on the way to the hospital which I take asking for details like DOB, address, etc. The hospital isn't far from home so we get there pretty quickly, answer the rest of the questions in person and wait.

It felt like a couple of hours before my aunts phone eventually rings in emergency and it was the doctor. He asked about all his meds, said he eventually regained conciousness but they had to sedate him to do the tests. He has breathing apparatus, the CT showed no bleeding around the brain and he would be moved into ICU. They asked us questions like if he is vegative etc. does he have a preference. We were able to go see him for a little, my mum broke down but he had some movement even though he is asleep. The doctor saw us on the way out and said they'll hopefully wake him tomorrow, test everything and see he is okay and maybe pull the breathing tube but if he is agitated they'll leave it in or something along those lines. His pulse rate is low and they wanted to work that out.

The Doc calls Saturday morning and asks my mum and aunt to go in to see them. He has movement but they need to talk in person. They found breaks in his neck which they needed the surgeons opinion. The surgeon said fusion surgery was necessary or he could become quadriplegic and would need palliative care. They wanted to it ASAP and were planning Sunday morning.

The surgery went ahead Sunday morning, they're happy and he is recovering. They just need to work out why he fainted in the first place and have him in a soft collar.

Today they started to ease the sedatives and removed the breathing tube which is great news. The cardiologist thinks that his low pulse rate could have caused the blackout and once he is okay they'll look at a pacemaker.

He had an incident not long after my grandmother fell where he thought he saw someone in the bathroom, got up in a panic, fainted and hurt his foot. It appeared to be an isolated incident and they did a ton of testing clearing him of any heart or other issues. He stayed at my aunts house for about a couple weeks before heading back home because he is pretty stubborn.

In the end it's a bit of a miracle considering what we were told when it happened originally. I thought the last time I was going to see my grandfather alive was when I helped them turn him which was a horrifying thought. He is on the mend and that's the main thing. He doesn't seem to remember anything which is also for the best.

There was also a very real chance I was going to be on a plane when this all happened. I was looking at going to the game but something in my gut said to stay in Australia. I'm grateful that I did because if I wasn't here maybe things are different. I also would have flown straight back home as soon as I landed
