May 5, 20205 yr Side note: have never had a garbage disposal anywhere and don’t really like the idea of sending stuff down the plumbing that I can just throw in the garbage can... anyways, current house has one that’s never worked. Well, like 2 or 3 weeks ago I go downstairs mid-morning and when using the sink, all the water (on the disposal side of the two basins) is backing up. Likely sludge/etc from the old disposal finally causing issues. ordered a new disposal on Home Depot website about 30 mins later, picked it up curbside during lunch, and changed it out (including re-wiring) after work that evening and by 6pm had a working disposal For the first time and a free flowing sink drain. if it wasn’t corona I might have outsourced it, but figured I didn’t have that option and I wasn’t going to deal with one side of the sink not draining for longer than about 2 seconds so I figured out how to do it and had it fixed same day. but, part of selecting a starter home was finding a place that wasn’t in need of any significant work or patches because I’d rather spend me free time not doing house projects. While I know many of you here have likely done solo projects (such as fixing a disposal if it’s broken), when it comes to flooring or cabinets or whatever, you’re all doing these things in SOME PART with your spouse, your kid(s) helping, having a local relative come give a hand with part of it. I’ve helped friends and family with things over the years and enjoyed it. But none of my family or close friends live in the area, so anything I do is going to be by myself for the most part, so if I’m going to do things solo I’m at least going to do activities I like doing solo. Not just repaint walls that have no blemishes because the color doesn’t happen to be my personal first choice.
May 5, 20205 yr Changing out a garbage disposal was paco's first solo project too! Then he installed a somewhat complicated ceiling fan. And he does have my dad to help him do a lot of the plumbing work on our projects, but other than that he does most of it. He does all of the flooring and lighting e.g. on his own.

I'm sure he's getting shown "appreciation" after all his hard work as well...
May 5, 20205 yr Mr. Di put a ceiling fan in our bedroom a few years ago that has no power to it. True story. Dust collector. Today is Cinco de Mayo people!!! Taco Tuesday!!! "I'm into fitness, fit'ness taco in my mouth"

Back when I was living in Denver, i nearly had a panic attack when our disposal died. She encouraged me to give it a shot and I ended up swapping it out no problem. Back then I was THAT bad when it came to anything remotely close to home improvement.

Taco Tuesday!!! "I'm into fitness, fit'ness taco in my mouth" Its not too hard to get power to it. Get some 14/2 romex and run the wire from the fan to the lightswitch box. Obviously, you'll have to remove the box and replace it with one with an additional spot for the switch. Locate the hot wire that goes into the box and run a pigtail from the switch to the hot wire. Same with the ground. Hook up the black for the fan wire to the other end of the switch and tie the white into the rest of the whites. Patch up holes and paint. And for god sake, test AFTER you cut the power to the room.
May 5, 20205 yr Quote Well, like 2 or 3 weeks ago I go downstairs mid-morning and when using the sink, all the water (on the disposal side of the two basins) is backing up. Likely sludge/etc from the old disposal finally causing issues. when this happens, remove the end cap outside to release the excessive backed up water. do NOT run your dishwasher or your laundry washer as they are using the same line and will overflow onto the floor.

That way no one can see me screw it up 3 times before I get it right

Like did probs send his now-wife Polaroids of this inside of his house when he asked her out on the first date? I don't give a F if you're single....unless you don't want to be. I just point out your naive choices to try to clue you in because obviously no one else in your life does.

I don't know if I'm ballsy enough to drink any on a Tuesday night though but tacos sound dericious! 😂

Last year I did a light remodel in our main floor bathroom (paint, new medicine cabinet, etc) - I was switching out all the outlets and light switches. For some reason, ONE of the switches was on a different circuit than the rest of the bathroom. I flipped off the breaker for the bathroom, and proceeded to start to remove this particular switch. Just as I was about the disconnect the (hot) wires, I accidentally flipped the switch and the lights above me came on Saved me from learning the hard way, and I learned a valuable lesson Plumbing I'm pretty good with, but electrical ish makes me mega nervous

Got zapped a couple of times because I was too lazy to walk out and flip the breaker before installing an outlet. It's not that bad. Installing breakers on the other hand, that makes me a little nervous.

I'm not one of those guys that can just look at something and figure out how to install it/build it/etc. Thanks to the wonders of instructional videos on Youtube, I've fixed or installed all sorts of stuff over the years

Being a Tuesday doesn't matter much for me with drinking. Lately I've been skipping full days, sometimes two-three in a row, but not this week. Daughter bought some white claw (LOL) Lime-yuck!! I added a shot of vodka to it. Looking forward to tacos though in a bit...….. I live in a place that was built in 1968. Rented it from an old Italian man when I was pregnant with my daughter in '86 to have more room. We nic named it "The compound" over the years. There's 9 other units here. There's a litany of things wrong here and our township does not have inspections. The old man died years ago, now his son owns it. I'm not sure if I'll be staying here after Mr. Di goes. I can't help but think about that even though I'm not there yet- but as things aren't working right, I feel I should consider moving someday if I am able to. I don't want to be a burden on either of my kids either. I have wine and matches as an alternative, so there's that!!

Most of the stuff isn't rocket science, you just need to know how to do it and not half a** it. We still have an electrical box with fuses. 60 amp service to the place. A week or two ago a fuse blew and we believe the cause was some moisture getting in there from a rotted window above where the box is. I can change a fuse, but the service box, and my neighbors, which is in our basement needs to be upgraded, like NOW. Last power outage blew up a brand new washing machine. I could go on, but I have more important things to do right now. The landlord needs to take responsibility for this. Mr. Di did tell him. His reply was to give him time. Really? I am being robbed of time. Mr. Di's cancer has now spread to his brain so he is doing 10 radiation treatments to his head. Running to the hospital everyday. He has a headache after day 2. I have enough meds here from this doc, his primary, and the oncologist to kill a horse. We're hanging in there. It's getting harder. I dread the day I see it in him or he tells me that's it. I will do whatever he wants. You want to die in this ish hole, or do you want me to take you out to a nice quiet hospice center? It's his choice. We're doing whatever he wants.
May 5, 20205 yr I do anything that doesn't require being on a huge ladder. I'll pay someone for that sheet. I'd rather work on my trucks cars and bikes. Time is scarce for the house. You do you agent.
