As you all (or at least many of you) may know, my mother's been battling stage 4 lung cancer since 2019 (along with multiple strokes along the way). Today we went to her oncologist for her monthly appointment, and the doctor said a word that she's never said to us before... "Remission", so my mother's cancer is in remission.

This is her second oncologist. The first one decided that she (my mother), should be on hospice to 'enjoy her last days' and refused to continue treating her. That was 2 years ago.

We ought to go into that other office with a boom box blasting:

incredible! fantastic news!

Just got back from my mother's oncologist. They're really happy with the results of her latest CT Scan. All of the cancer has reduced a little. So a really good report.

  • Proud of this girl.  Eleventy billion push ups, sit ups, squats, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, planks, combinations, self defenses and weapon katas later in the cold and wind she earned her black

  • I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer in November. They removed my thyroid gland right before Thanksgiving. Post surgical blood test showed a thyroid globulin number of a 6, which is above the threshold

"Have you ever been to Baltimore?”

”No”

"Do you want to go to Baltimore?”

”No”

Fin classic.  I love being from Philly.

Thanks. As a side note, Monday at about 5 PM, the oncologist office called and in a casual sort of conversation said that the blood work from that previous Friday had come back and her potassium was high at 6.1. We spoke about it for a minute or so, then in a causal sort of way the nurse says, "So you should go to the ER...", confused me for a moment and I had to clarify... "Wait, you want me to rush her to the ER right now?" ... "Yes, go to the ER right now, 6.1 could cause a heart attack..."

So we were in the ER for 3 or 4 hours on Monday. The tests showed normal potassium levels, so the 6.1 was likely a false reading.

Got a letter in the mail yesterday from the Department of Defense Commissary system reminding me that I have full access to the commissary and exchanges and that there is one that is within 10 miles of my address (it's actually 13 miles).

I knew that, of course and have been a couple of times but at that time (2019-2020 pre Covid), grocery prices were basically equal. So my only savings was the sales tax, but the commissary is 5 or 6 miles further away than the nearest Food Lion and Kroger.

So I decided to go onto the Food Lion website and put 6 items into my 'cart' as if I was going to buy them. Things that I will need to buy next time I go to the store, so legit items that I'll get.

The total at Food Lion (7 miles away)... $52.59

I then went to the Commissary site and put the same 6 items into my cart... well, I say 6 because it's 6 different things but some of them I'm getting multiples of. So it's actually 9 things (at both locations).

The total at the Commissary (13 miles away)... $36.31

An additional mile or so down the road from the commissary is the Navy Exchange gas station, which is about $0.40 per gallon cheaper than my local stations.

I think I can drive the extra 6 miles (12 round trip) for those savings. Of course, as an Army man, I'll have to turn a blind eye at all of the Navy stuff... Go Army! Beat Navy!!

It seems like they start advertising for it earlier every year.

My dad has a bread route (post-Army) for most of my life (age 7-8 onwards), and for many years when he was working in Key West he was delivering to the commissary on the base down there. This was in my early secks years before I was a raw-dogging kind of guy, and the anger I had when I saw the jumbo packs of condoms were like 20% the price of what grocery stores/walmart/walgreens sold them for  :furious:

36 years ago right at this moment, I was in the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) at Fort Meade in Maryland, soon to raise my right hand and say:

Quote

I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Hard to believe that 36 years has come and gone since then, I remember it like it was last week!
