taters gonna tate

Taters going to hang their hat on 85% of a season three years ago and 5 games against 3 teams that picked top 5 in the draft and Garrett's Cowboys last season (ignoring the stinkers against New England and Seattle).

Though Wentz is in Year 5 and hasn't won a play off game so far. It would be interesting to know how many QBs didn't win a play off game in their first 5 years and then did after that.

A few years ago this debate came up and I did research and most QBs who went on to win Superbowls didn't win a playoff game at all until their 4th or 5th seasons.  Most teams take several years to win a Super Bowl (coach and core talent combo).

Dang.  Have to admit a compelling case.

You cannot argue a single thing that Greeny has said....

Same QBR as Jamies Winston the past 2 years. WOW.

Yeah that's quite the case he laid out.

Doug and the team keep thinking they'll fight through, dig out of a hole, believe in themselves...why do they get into a hole and desperate situation every year?

On Doug's annoyance at the reporter calling some throws "layups" there was a youtube commenter that said you may not be a restaurant chef but you can tell if a basic food item you order isn't done right, you don't need to be an expert to see that.  I agree with that.  I get where Doug's coming from, there are nuances.  But Wentz is overthrowing where guys are having to leap, hitting the dirt where guys are diving and falling to catch it, and forcing throws into coverage and making those unnecessary "hero throws."

In the Rams game I saw the O line playing very well despite injuries and the Rams tough defense, and enough skill players making plays.  I kept thinking that strong QB play would get the ball to those playmakers and win the game.  That was completely on Wentz (and perhaps a little on play calling).  The defense is another story but on offense, that game was all on Wentz.

Yeah, when your only argument is 'are you a suitably qualified expert'  you don't really have an argument, you're deflecting.

And the thing is... These guys in the media may talk rubbish sometimes. They may frustrate us with some of the things they write. But they've all seen a lot of football. They all know, to varying extents, what's good and what's not. What's working and what isn't.

You and me both.

I was hoping that Wentz would address needing to improve his mechanics in his presser yesterday. But, nope, he still just says that he missed some throws...have to do better, etc.  I think he really hates working on footwork and arm slot, etc.  He wants to keep acting like it's just a case of his missing throws...and I'll get it right next time.  Until he cleans up his mechanics, it's not going to get a lot better or there will be inconsistency.

His footwork is God awful... His best throws are actually when he rolls out, I think he is completely overthinking it right now.

Which makes you wonder why they don't roll him out a lot more. Get him moving. And that in turn will help the OL more.

I think he hates technique and a lot of structure. He is a country boy who wants to get out there and sling it all over the yard and live for the next throw. But, only a few QBs like Favre can get away with doing that.  Most QBs can't.

He trusts himself too much as well. Now that can be a good thing but ultimately it leads to some big plays. Unfortunately it also gives him, in his head, complete justification for trying things.

I agree to some extent. He knows he has a big arm, so he figures he can just throw it between 2 defenders 20 yards downfield on 1st down and it will end up fine.  But, I would imagine at at a school like NDSU, they probably aren't going to coach up a QB the same way a major university that runs a pro type offense would. So, he has accrued habits that he is resistant to change. It's okay to trust your skills, but at the highest level of football you better have good mechanics.  His mechanics are really bad right now.  Also, his situational awareness has been bad this year.  So, it's two major things that he has to address.

So a couple of things here.

1) He came from a pro style offense at NDSU so that's not quite a fair argument.

2) I just think he completely trusts his arm and his ability. Now sometimes that means that he makes the big plays. Other times it means he fumbles or throws a really bad INT. Sadly his complete belief in his ability means he's just going to keep trying to make those plays.

I agree, he's either overthinking or underthinking which really boils down to being unprepared, everything should be second nature at this point in his career.

I think if he's fully prepared and focusing he'll be OK.

I'll say this now: If Wentz doesn't play well against Bengals, Wentz would need to get benched.

I'm sure some would agree with you. Others of course would not. But the reality is... The team simply aren't going to do that.

I don't think it's that bad. Carson has already surpassed McNabb numbers

McNabb is irrelevant to the conversation. His loser & choker legacy is set in stone

with no chance whatsoever for improvement or redemption. Wentz can still iron

this thing out . . . but with every passing game it becomes less and less likely that

he will do so. Time is of the essence. With the $$ he's making it won't be too long

before decisions are made that are beyond his control and, very likely, not to his liking.

I think the $$$ he's being paid actually buys him time.

If we lose to CIN, then continuing to playing Wentz basically ensures us a top 5 pick and legit shot at Trevor Lawrence. Playing Hurts could provide a spark and he can be someone for the team to rally around which could jeopardize our draft position. So if we lose to CIN, it is vital that we continue playing Wentz.
