Jalen Hurts - shoulder sprain injury; expected for playoffs

Given what I see teammates and coaches talk about his work-ethic and drive I expect him to focus the off season on:

1. Body mechanics to improve as a consistently accurate thrower of the football.

2. Processing progressions and making faster decisions.

Both of these are related because if you don't have confidence in #1 you hesitate and windows are lost.  IMO that is a good part of why he doesn't pull the trigger.

I give him this off season to focus on those areas and I expect a significant leap in performance for next season.  If that is NOT what happens then I am starting to think that what we are seeing close to his ceiling with significant variance play to play and game to game.  If he focuses on other areas I will be disappointed and feel like he is unable to see where his issues are and appropriately focus on addressing them.

Edit:  Wanted to add this. Disclaimer: I still hate the Cowboys.  Dak Prescott was not a great consistently accurate QB coming out of College.  At some point a few years ago he really started working on his body mechanics and hip usage / throwing motion.  It is very evident in his improvement.  You can still see him running some of the same drills when he is doing his on field warm-ups pregame. (there is a hip snapping drill that looks ridiculous but it is how you continue to build that muscle memory).

Why wouldn't he have spent last summer on this? It's not like that stuff just developed this year

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

When will people learn that football is a team sport? Saying, "McNair didn't win a Super Bowl so we need a better QB than him," is stupid. Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl. Why? Because he wasn't on the best team. Jim Kelly never won a Super Bowl. In fact, Kelly lost to Hostetler ( a backup forced to play).

I'm not saying you want your QB to be a dud, but all the QB has to do is execute the game plan and help his TEAM win a game. See Jim McMahon, Joe Flacco, Trent Dilfer, Nick Foles, etc...

Nick Foles played like an all star in the Super Bowl. Really bad example.

What's somewhat amazing to me is that the Hurts Haters and the Hurts Humpers essentially have the same position.

Both sides think that he needs to improve as a passer to be considered a qb1.

Both sides don't see any viable alternatives in the draft or free agency.

Both sides seem fine to give him another year to show what he can do.

The only disagreement seems to be whether or not he has the capacity to get better. And the Hurts Haters seem to be slowly coming to the realization that giving him another year to do so is the only viable path forward the team has, especially since our deteriorating draft capital means that any of the qbs who vastly improve their status at the senior bowl are going to be long gone by the time we pick.

So is there anything left to discuss?

This city turns into a complete s* show when folks start discussing Jalen Hurts.

But you’re right, unless the best QB in football (ARod) wants to come here, Jalen is the best option and we are all invested in him improving. The question is whether he will continue to work to improve - we won’t know until next summer.

The rest of the back and forth is just pride, especially since the team is miraculously winning.

I think that’s true to a degree.

But there are definitely still a fair few posters who don’t want to see Hurts as the QB either in the short or long term and think he has no chance of being a good starting Quarterback.

You only have to look at the various "Is it time to bench Hurts polls over the past few weeks”

So it's a team sport when McNair can't win a Super Bowl (and was badly outplayed by the opposing QB), but it's a credit to Hurts and evidence that he's our guy simply because our record went from 4-11-1 to 8-7 despite one of the least productive passing offenses in the entire NFL.

Got it.

It's always a team sport, but your straw man is noted.

BTW, how was McNair "badly outplayed by the opposing QB?" McNair played against the Rams' defense and Warner against the Titans' defense. Neither QB actually passed against the other. That game was tied up until the last couple minutes. Warner hit the big chunk play for the go ahead TD and McNair responded with a final drive that came up literally inches short. Warner passed for more yards, but McNair added a large chunk of yards on the ground. Both QBs completed almost the same number of passes, yet McNair attempted less throws. You're revising history to make a fictitious argument.

It's a bad example to show that otherwise unheralded QBs can play well in the Super Bowl? We were underdogs in every postseason game in 2017, in large part because nobody expected a team with a backup QB and a few other backups to beat healthy teams in the postseason. I just don't buy any argument that states, " As long as __________ is the starting  __ then we will never win a Super Bowl." To me, that's just a moronic way for a fan to **** about a player they don't like on the team.

I am guessing because Kurt Warner threw for 414 yards and 2 TDs, but McNair threw for 214 yards and no TDs. You know only numbers matter and nothing within the context of the game does - or at least when it comes to QBs.

I dont think you understand what a straw man argument is...

Yup.  If he was trying to throw fancy terms around, he should have accused you of creating a false equivalency.   You didn't... but, it would fit better.

That is the definition of a straw man. It's right there for all to see. Feel free to pretend it didn't happen. Feel free to google "straw man" if you still have doubts. It is not false equivalence because we aren't concluding that two different things are equal because of a shared trait. He simply created a fake version of my statement in an attempt to dismiss it mockingly.

Biggest game in Jalen’s NFL career is coming up. Let’s see how he plays.

Without doubt! Huge huge game for Hurts and this team.

Other than running the ball the majority of the time, target DeVonta early and often.

Hoping Goedert can finally hold on to the ball again these two have to be the targets first and foremost.

How you feeling about Hurts heading into the final game against Dallas with playoff implications?

Seems like he’s improving.

With Miles out and Howard hampered, Hurts really stepped up today. No bad decisions or turnovers and some very timely runs.

Yeah I don't really know why there's so much hate for him for this game. I think he played well. He wasn't great but he made some big big plays in big moments.

Some people have hated Hurts since day 1, and still do.

We always have a certain segment of the fanbase that roots against our QB no matter what. The McNabb haters, the "Anyone but Foles" crowd etc.

Thing is with Hurts... We know his limitations, we know he can and what he can't do. But I think that's enough to win with. It may not be enough to win the SB but that's also because our D is pretty bad too.

Foles get props for finishing strong in 2018  and Carson for 2019.  Well give it up to Jalen for 2021.

His talent is limited at best, the Eagles are maximizing it and finding relative success. After the disaster that was the Wentz led Eagles last year, it's quite a turnaround.

Jalen after Fans almost fell on him.   That was pretty scary but it fell just before he got there.   He also helped some of them get up.
