What exactly is 'arm talent' in your opinion?

What Josh Allen, Pat Mahommes, Aaron Rodgers have.  What 20 or more QB's have that Hurts does not.

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

Roseman, Sirianni leave no doubt Jalen Hurts will be Eagles' 2022 QB

Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni couldn’t have been any clearer.

Jalen Hurts will be the Eagles’ quarterback in 2022.

No offseason drama. The decision has been made.

On Wednesday, three days after the season ended with a thud in Tampa, Roseman and Sirianni both said they saw enough from Hurts in 2021 to feel comfortable moving forward with him as the Eagles' quarterback.

You want Russell Wilson? Doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen.

You want Kenny Pickett? Doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen.

"Jalen knows where he stands with us,” Sirianni said. "He knows he’s our quarterback.

"How do you know where you stand with a coaching staff? You communicate, and you talk over and over and over and over again. So Jalen knows where he stands with us. I thought he did a great job of getting better throughout the year.

"There’s no secrets there. He knows he’s our guy.”

By declaring Hurts the 2022 starter this early, Roseman and Sirianni eliminate an entire offseason of speculation, rumors and reports.

Or maybe not eliminate but at least reduce.

"We talk about Jalen and the growth he had, really 1st-year starter, 2nd-year player, leading this team to the playoffs, tremendously impressed by his work ethic, his leadership,” Roseman said. "Last time we talked was during camp and we said we wanted to see him take the bull by the horn, and he certainly did that.”

The Eagles have three 1st-round picks  - Nos. 15, 16 and 19 - and the flexibility to draft a top quarterback in April or try to acquire a veteran either via trade or free agency if that’s the route they chose.

But Roseman emphasized the importance of using those picks to add talent around Hurts instead of replacing him.

Important to note also that Hurts is entering Year 3 of his four-year rookie deal and carries a modest $1.643 million salary cap figure in 2022. That gives Roseman a tremendous amount of flexibility to add pieces around Hurts.

"For us, we've got to do whatever we can to help him continue to develop and how do we do that? By surrounding him with really good players,” said Roseman, the Eagles’ GM since 2010 (minus 2015).

"We’re continuing to figure out ways to build. We’re not happy that our season ended (early) in the playoffs. We want to build a team that has home playoff games, really build a team that gets a bye. Those assets allow us to continue to build and add good players to our team.

"We’re in this mode of trying to build this team and get as many talented players that we possibly can to compete for championships going forward, and we have a great opportunity to do that this offseason, to keep building.”

This season was widely considered an audition for the 23-year-old Hurts, who started four games last year but inherited the starting job when the Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Colts in February.

Hurts went 8-7 in 15 regular-season starts, including a 6-2 record down the stretch to propel the Eagles into the playoffs in Sirianni's first year as head coach.

He improved his completion percentage from 52 percent to 61 percent, reduced his turnovers and sacks and rushed for 784 yards with a 5.6 average and 10 touchdowns. His 26 combined touchdowns ranked 14th in the NFL.

But he also struggled in the wild-card loss to the Bucs, throwing two interceptions and completing only 53.5 percent of his passes in a game the Eagles trailed 31-0 going into the fourth quarter.

His performance in Tampa once again raised questions about Hurts’ accuracy, his decision making in the pocket and his ability to make enough plays in the passing game to take a team on a deep postseason run.

"You take everything into account,” Sirianni said. "You take into account the whole body of work. You don’t just count Jalen’s (three-interception) game against the Giants. You count the entire body of work. I’m pleased with the way he developed as a passer, as a quarterback. We’ve seen so many things that he got better at, and that goes into Jalen and the football character he has, the desire and the want-to, how badly this guy wants to be an elite, elite, elite player in this league.

"When he wasn’t able to have that ability to run as effectively with the ankle, three of his last four games he played (he had) over a 100 quarterback rating. You saw him develop in the sense of early in the year when he had to extend a play, it was a run. Later in the year he became a passer as he extended plays, and that really helped us down the stretch.

"Really pleased with how he developed as our quarterback. You look at the whole body of work, and the whole body of work we’re really pleased with where he is and where he’s going to be."

They actually wanted Wentz to continue playing for them, though. Wentz would've been the starter if he didn't force a trade.

That doesn't explain what 'arm talent' is. All you are saying is that 20 other QBs have something that Hurts does not. What is this unexplainable thing that these QBs have, that Hurts does not?

Did all 20 of these guys come out of the womb this way? Is this something they worked on all their life and got better at? Is it something that you can get better at?

I mean JaMarcus Russell had a massive arm, but didn't study the finer points of being a QB and couldn't throw a short pass to save his life so he fizzled out in the NFL. Did he have arm talent or not? Back in early 2000s Tom Brady was accused of being a dink and dunk QB and it took a few years before he started to really throw it down the field and he attributed that to working on his throwing motion and getting better. Did he have hidden arm talent that suddenly appeared one day?

I want to know what we are actually talking about when it comes to 'arm talent'. Is it just a term that does not mean one thing and is used to describe a QB, which means it is something that can be worked on?

You can teach the stuff JaMarcus Russell did not have, you can not teach arm talent.  You either have it or you don't.  Here is an example of arm talent, this is something that Jalen Hurts will never be able to do.

I wonder if he would rejoin the board if we acquired Carr.......

It's amazing how some people will double, triple, and even quadruple down on stupid when they have an agenda to push.

They said Wentz was the QB last year to try to salvage whatever trade value he had left. Comparing that to endorsing Hurts this year is the definition of apples to oranges.

Hurts will be the Eagles starting QB for at least one more season in 2022 whether some people like it or not.

What's wild about that throw is how effortless it is for him. Jalen takes two steps while staring to get it there two seconds too late

Great Jamarcus Russell story

One of his former teammates in an interview said his OC gave Russell a DVD of plays for him to study for an upcoming game. The next day the OC asked him which plays he felt most comfortable with and Russell said all of them. Turns out the OC purposely gave him a blank DVD to see if he would even watch it and obviously he didn't, lol.

I know back then you didn’t want Wentz to speak, but the truth is Wentz wanted to leave the Eagles. The Eagles wanted him to stay.

Interesting. At what point in life is the determination made that you can or can not read the defense, stand on the pocket and throw a 30 yard in route?

At what point does it become impossible for someone to get better? Like does an 18 year old kid say - 'welp I can't throw that so there is no need in trying anymore' - Does someone's arm muscles atrophy in college and that is all they will ever be?

I just find it odd that people are saying that there is no way a 23 year old kid can get any better. I am not even arguing that he will get better, just that it is automatically assumed that nope, there is no way in the world this person could actually work on his game and get better, he has hit his ceiling at 23 years old.

Mike was in denial about all of that back then hahaha.

Carson definitely had the allegiance of a large majority of the fanbase. I know he believes (and I now agree with him) that leaving was the best move, but he really broke a lot of folks’ hearts. I’m not sure he truly understands the impact of his decision - it was very personal to the fanbase who still see him as the largest reason they got to witness a SB.

The Eagles will move forward with Hurts as the starting QB, and build around him. I like using picks to build the team, but not sure why they aren't letting Minni_2 compete for the starting QB spot.

Your thoughts?

I’d caution against taking anything they say at face value. They’ve changed direction plenty of times in the past after saying one thing.

Correct

I don’t believe anything the FO says but I find this to be a good solution unless a great deal presents itself. They need all their assets to build right now.

They will still be looking to upgrade at the QB position if one became available.

It's the right move to make at this time and one of those times where they are obviously telling the truth if you just use common sense and/or aren't clutching to an anti-Hurts agenda.

If it’s not too steep a price. Spending multiple 1sts on Old Man Anti-Vax or an aging Russ is not a good move with this developing roster.

RENT. FN. FREE

Was it a tough loss?  Yes.   But it was his first playoff game.  Most young QB's first playoff games don't go well.  It happens.  This was a game nobody predicted he would even be playing.   Think about this.   The loss to the Bucs was Jalen's 20th Start in his career.  Only 20 starts and he's already got a playoff start under his belt.  He's really just getting started.   I liked Jalen growth and evolution as a Starter this year.   Nobody had us going to the playoffs preseason.  Nobody thought we would go from last place to 2nd Place and Playoffs.  Jalen was the QB for the majority of the season and help to lead us.  He earned the position for 2022.  This will be the first time he will have consistent play calling in the last 6 seasons.   Yes he needs to work on things, every young QB does.   I don't agree with mortgaging the future for Wilson, Rodgers or anyone really.   Let's continue to build with this young team.  Jalen is still on a rookie deal.  I'm very excited about 2022.   This season was a success considering we are basically rebuilding post Super Bowl Era and we've already made the playoffs.   People can't spin it now, nobody has us making the Playoffs with this roster and they did it.  Very happy Both Howie and Nick are behind Jalen being the starter next season.

Common sense reasons why bring back Hurts for at least another year is the obvious move

1. He is 23 years old, has been in the league for two years, and a starter for one. He could develop and get better

2. Hurts counts very little against the cap

3. The team has multiple holes to fill across the roster so assets and cap dollars are important

4. The team is FAR from a great QB away from being a contender

5. To trade for a great QB would take multiple high level assets and high cap dollars

6. If they trade multiple high level assets and tie up a lot of cap in a QB they can't fix the rest of the roster

7. Wilson and Rodgers, and probably Watson as well aren't going to want to come here

8. Trading lesser assets and spending 25 million on a slightly above average QB like Carr or Jimmy G. doesn't move the needle much

9. This is a bad QB draft class

10. The Eagles pick 15, 16, and 19, which doesn't position them for one of the top QB's in this class anyway

11. Giving up multiple assets to trade up for a QB in a bad draft class would be terrible asset management

12. Going with a rookie QB would be restarting a rebuild with a total unknown, when Hurts has already proven they are a playoff team with him

Do I need to keep going.....

I don’t blame any player for doing what they feel is best for them to do, but the truth is the truth. Wentz wanted out and the Eagles did the best the could considering the circumstances. The harder reality when it comes to a Wentz is people just see 2017 and think that’s just what he was, but he’s been in the league for 6 years now. He’s started 85 games. Carson Wentz everything involved with him. The good and the bad. You’re right though. He and many others were…no are absolutely in denial when it comes to that particular player.
