Jalen Hurts - shoulder sprain injury; expected for playoffs

The Eagles will move forward with Hurts as the starting QB, and build around him. I like using picks to build the team, but not sure why they aren't letting Minni_2 compete for the starting QB spot.

Your thoughts?

They probably have some offers for Minshew that will turn our 6th rd investment into something better. With a supposedly weak QB class available in the draft, there should be some qb-needy teams willing to give him a look while he's still on a rookie contract.

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

You don't trade Minshew until a team becomes needy - most likely by way of injury.

With your definition of arm strength, at what point can a QB get better or not get better? Is there an age range for this?

Arm strength can not be taught, you can not acquire it in the weight room.  You have it or you don’t.

Howie already did that stuff when he traded for Minshew. You might not be satisfied with that, but that doesn’t mean the Eagles aren’t. Howie wasn’t sold on any of the quarterbacks last draft. He was right there in the mist to get one of them. He and the head coach have told you they’re satisfied with Hurts. They’re not making any big trade moves, at least not this season.

I never said they were or weren't. I said they'd look at all their options.

Most of the "options” short of giving up all of their 1sts for an elite level quarterback aren’t better than what they have.

That’s your thoughts on the matter. Doesn’t mean it’s theirs. This is a team that picked the likes of Jalen Reagor and JJAW. They’re not immune from making bad decisions.

You guys need to watch and listen to the press conference, not the cherry picked reporter takes.

At first, he didn't commit. Reporter pressed him, he said yes Hurts will be 2022 starter.  Then later another reporter said you said that last year about Wentz.  Howie laughed, then gave a vague answer about always looking for opportunities at every position to improve.

Asked about trading picks for a QB:  says he's open to opportunities to improve any position, vague answer.

They can do whatever they want, even after saying whatever. But Siri said Hurts is the guy, and said Hurts knows it. That's a strong public statement. Howie said he wants to build around Hurts, which tells you were he will probably head with his draft picks. Another strong public statement. It might mean something, or maybe Howie does the Howie dance in the dark and pull some crazy sheet.

The message I clearly heard from Howie, Siri and reporters and analyzers is that Hurts is the man and they will use the draft picks to build around him. Nothing vague there. They may not do it, but THAT was the message.

It’s just talk.  Eagles know they have to improve at QB.  Too many open guys.

It wasn't as strong as you're making it out to be. Siri said "Jalen knows how we feel about him." Howie said a couple different times about being open to opportunities. He also said open to trading back to get a pick in 2023. They might be fine with Hurts as starter, but open to an upgrade and looking at 2023 options as well.

Not relevant. I never said I had a name in mind nor was I ever asked for one. All I said was I believe they’re going to look at all their options.

COMPLETELY relevant and a total cop out by you.

Who are they realistically getting that's a legit upgrade, answer the question.

I would translate what I heard today into the team keeping Hurts as a placeholder at QB until better long term options become available.  Don't see the team mortgaging the future at this stage.

Hurts has his detractors here, and I'm not a big fan.  But if the organizational goal right now is to rebuild the team, Hurts can be an acceptable option for the next year or two.  He's diligent, well liked, has a good attitude, and has had some success on the field.  He also has a good contract.  I see short term stability with him.  Long term he's not the answer.

Bang on. QB is the most important position - they will look at evaluate all options in the off-season. This will include evaluation of upgrade they get vs cost ($ and picks).

Quite likely they just don't find that option and they are perfectly happy rolling with Hurts. But also don't be surprised if there is a QB prospect they love that gets drafted. Hurts hasn't convinced them such that he will keep them from drafting a prospect they love.

It’s clear that people just believe what they want to believe. If people want Hurts to be the starter next year, they’ll take Howie at Dave value. If they don’t, they’ll say, "you can’t trust anything he says!”

At what age does someone know they don't have it?

Joe Burrow spent 5 years in college, 3 of them in Ohio state before he transferred to LSU because Ohio State felt Dwayne Haskins was a better player and started him. Did Burrow not have the arm talent then? When did they figure out that he had this talent?

WTF is the point you are trying to make?

Burrow doesn't have elite arm talent. Its above average and enough to be successful in the NFL depending on the other things but nowhere near Allen, Rodgers etc. He does do all those other things which can compensate extremely well.

Yet they’re still here. Those guys have been far greater mistakes than Hurts yet they’re still here. I think you’re the one expecting something that isn’t going to happen. You’re going to be disappointed.

He was flat out asked the question and he said yes. He even went further as you said as wanting to build around him. Sirianni’s quote after the playoff game was also very pro Hurts despite the fact he acknowledged he had a bad game. People are grasping for straws here. The Eagles are telling everyone what they’re doing. Bottom line is no team is going to change their minds by offering them a trade of taking all of their first round picks. I’ll add if you hear what the Colts said about Wentz and compare it to what the Eagles said about Hurts you clearly see a difference.

All anyone needs to know here is the Eagles at the beginning of last year to go as far back as even as the end of last season refused to name Hurts as the starter. They didn’t even do it till the week of the final preseason game! Now they did it at their first press conference at the end of this season. Wake up and realize Hurts is the guy for 2022 and possibly longer. Deal with it or find another team to root for.

I’m going to let you in on a secret guys, sometimes team officials lie in press conferences.

Just keep it between us though, it’s top secret insider info.

Bud we've had a lot of good conversations on Hurts and I know you are a pretty well balanced guy. But come on now you can't think Hurts is possibly the guy for longer than 2022. Howie will be doing what he can to improve this team and that goes for QB too.

Not for me, because I have a government SECRET clearance....and a Need To Know. The Eagles org knows this. So I am in. Apparently, some of you don't have the Need To Know access, which is the golden key for insider information. 😆

Weren't there several reports of him trying to move up for Wilson? The Jets wouldn't budge? Kind of says the opposite of what you're claiming, no?

I dunno, I think Howie realizes that even with a top tier QB, this roster isn't getting far into the playoffs, too many holes.

They need much more time to rebuild, in the meantime Hurts is a good stop gap option. I wonder if Hurts himself realizes this.

And with the weak NFC East, this team can still probably make or be on the cusp of making the playoffs for the next couple years, even with Hurts at QB.

The problem here is though, even if you wait another 2-3 years and then swap out Hurts for another young QB, then you still need to time to develop that QB. So we're talking about maybe 4-5 years before this team can really contend for a championship. By then you are getting close to missing out on the prime years of Smith, Goedert, etc....it's tricky.

So I dunno, I think it's just as likely in 2-3 years we sign a FA QB like Derek Carr or Cousins to replace Hurts.

Agreed. At the very least you bring in someone to compete. Also Howie lies all the time.

Let me give you a nickel’s worth of free advice. If you’re going to spend time on a text based message board, learn how to read. At no time ever did I mention any name they would go after. I have no idea who they like. All I said from the beginning was I believe they are going to continue to look at all possible options. You seem to have a problem with my belief that they aren’t 100% sold on Hurts in spite of what they say, and clearly that’s causing the sand in your V to flare up. I’ve even said a couple times, Hurts may very well end up being the guy next year. That does not mean they aren’t going to look at and discuss all options.
