It's a desperate move from a desperate leader who knows about the criminal activity of his members. They are panicking more now, than on 1/6.

It was a statement he issued, I don't know that there was any opportunity. The coverage itself does push back on that specific point, but McCarthy is probably too big a pansy to allow the media to ask those kinds of questions directly.

I understand the reason perfectly fine... it's because they're stupid.

Oh dear, McCarthy's threats might well be against the law.

McCarthy warned the companies not to comply, saying:

"If these companies comply with the Democrat order to turn over private information, they are in violation of federal law and subject to losing their ability to operate in the United States. If companies still choose to violate federal law, a Republican majority will not forget and will stand with Americans to hold them fully accountable under the law."

The warning that a Republican majority "will not forget" if the companies comply raised a number of red flags.

This is particularly true in regards to 18 U.S. Code § 1505, which states:

"Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of ... any inquiry or investigation [that] is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress—

Shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both."

McCarthy, along the with the support of the GOP, actually subpoenaed Datto in 2016 to try and get ahold of Clinton emails.

Since his arrest, he has made headlines for his multiple attempts to get out of jail before his trial, his demand for organic food in jail because of his supposed Shaman faith bars, and going on national TV while behind bars.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., updated Chansley’s criminal docket on Thursday to reveal that a plea agreement hearing is set for his case on Friday morning before Judge Royce C. Lamberth. Chansley—who is locked up in a D.C. jail—will appear in the hearing via video link.

While the details of the deal are not yet available, Chansley faces up to 28 years in prison if convicted on the six charges.

His lawyer, Al Watkins, has repeatedly claimed that his client is no longer a Trump-sympathizing conspiracy theorist and thus should be cut a break. In a statement on Thursday, Watkins again pointed to Chansley’s supposed repudiation of QAnon.

"Mr. Chansley, a long avowed and practicing Shaman, has repudiated the ‘Q’ previously assigned to him and requests future references to him be devoid of use of the letter ‘Q’,” he wrote.

"It is imperative that patience and compassion be accorded those, who like Mr. Chansley, were non-violent, peaceful and possessed of genuine mental health issues which rendered them more vulnerable to the propaganda of the day but who, at the end of day, seek to be accountable for their actions,” Watkins added.

After the 2020 election, I have turned off cable news.

While I'm greatly relieved that Trump is out of office, Trumpism is alive and well. As a former Republican, my first thoughts during the Trump Reich were that the party has changed so much. 

But Trump did not change the GOP - he merely revealed it, and every sentient/decent Republican exited.

Here is my question for those of you with the fortitude to keep tracking political news: do you have legitimate hope that Trump and his cabal of criminals will ever be held to account for any of their several crimes?  Put the Q Shame-Man in jail for 3 months is nice and all, but will the true criminals ever be brought to justice? If you think so, please elaborate!

There will be a lot more Scooter Libby types thrown to the wolves, as Trump seems to not care how that makes him look.

We've seen what they do to high level politicians who break the law. Nothing more than a perfunctory slap on the wrist, at worst.

I really hope I am wrong.

Until voters hold elected officials accountable they'll keep behaving in ways that reward them.

Of course some people want Trump charged for the insurrection.  He also has a good chance to win the 2024 election.

I wish this were the case. I know of a few decent Republicans who have taken the position of:  If every sane person leaves the party, then it is doomed to be left to the crazy Trumpers. Somebody has to stay with the party in order to get reasonable Republicans on the ballots and lead the next wave. 

But many, many more I know of have taken the apathetic position: They accept Trump is the leader of the party, whether they like him or not, and It doesn't matter. To me, that's the most worrisome. When authoritarianism takes over, they will lose all their power to party, and they will simply lay down and accept it.

I wonder. I doubt our criminal system will allow them to stand trial. So no, I don't see them in prison. But I believe the people can make a difference, if they're willing to hold accountable the ruling class who weaponize their power. So maybe not now, but if the powers that be start pushing back, maybe they will be defeated in effect.
