My parents taught me to understand that if you are in a group that does something wrong you share the responsibility with the group no matter your intentions. Judges will of course take details into account in the sentencing and that is fine. For example, there were a few people claiming to be there just to document the event. They should also be found guilty but of lesser infractions and lighter punishment. Might be hard to rule out this defense for many though.
