It's not the guns that made the America experiment a success (thus far). The American Revolution came about during the Enlightenment, and had at the apex of the pyramid of society learned men who believed that an egalitarian society that enabled the lowest borne to achieve greatness through his* own merits and fortitude would maximize the strength of a nation. They envisioned the closest thing to a meritocracy as the world had at the time. Such societies invite change and churn as technological advances results in entire industries turning over at regular intervals. Populism usually brings with it protectionism, and Trump's flavor is no different (or small minded) than what came before. Of course he had twitter and a particular kind of unearned machismo that turns some people on I guess. Anyway. The 2020 election being a catalyst for a flirtation with insurrection and coup-like behavior isn't going to be one that welcomes an evolution in our democratic republic. It was quite literally the result of an epic temper tantrum by Trump which was adopted by his followers because of their obsession with being the aggrieved supreme. This of course despite incredible structural advantages that the Republican party has nationwide that allows them to compete and often dominate politically despite losing every national popular vote except one the last 30 odd years. This is a party out of touch living on lifelines from the electoral college and gerrymandering. Which makes their grievances all the more hollow. * Purposeful pronoun.

June 1, 20214 yr No broad rejection of the 2016 results ever materialized among Democrats. Yes, they believed Russia interfered by leveraging our own social media networks against Hillary, and ... they were right. But there was never any serious effort mounted that sought to overturn election results on some baseless assertion that Russia actually changed votes meant for Hillary to Trump. Attempting to equate the reaction of the Democratic party to 2016 and the Republican party to 2020 is just laughable. They're not even close. Sure, the left held marches and protests. But there wasn't a march on and violent invasion of the Capitol building during the vote count with the express goal of blocking the peaceful transfer of power to the rightful winner of the election. There weren't over 100 Democrats in Congress willing to obstruct the process and claim they were doing it "for America" (they were not, they were doing it for Trump or more likely their own political futures). It's absurd on its face. Republicans circa 2021 are ef'ing embarrassing.

Which is saying something considering how much the left shoots itself in the face.

You guys are trying to rationalize with people who have completely lost ALL rationalization. There is no amount of facts or historical truths you can present them that will change their opinion that everything evil in the world is caused by Democrats. There is no longer a rational, real life, thought process with them. They will cash an unemployment check on the way to the doctors office, paid for by Medicaid while cussing about the freeloading socialists ruining America. This illusion that all their problems are caused by socialist democrats has been fed to them by right wing, fascist propaganda for years and they don’t even know what socialism or fascism is... literally don’t know the definitions. Trump is a con man who grifts them for money, but the mentality of "trumpism” isn’t going anywhere. This is a real problem that is way beyond trump.
