January 11, 20214 yr Now taking questions. Zack Berman: How do you weigh coaching vs personnel...how do you evaluate Howie? My paraphrase of Lurie: Lurie: I evaluate every aspect. Where I think we're at is: we made a lot of decisions to accomplish the first SB. (Rehash of what Howie has said the last 2 years). Strategic mistakes to "hold the band together." Short term personnel decisions to try and repeat SB. 2018: AJ reception away from winning another playoff game. 2019: Wentz concussion in playoff game. Claiming they've been close. We're now having to rebuild like we did in 2016. Transitional period. Howie can rebuild to a dominant team to reach potential.
January 11, 20214 yr Well nobody can ever take that Super Bowl night away from me! If Roseman is in charge of drafting again, then this year becomes even more of a disappointment. Guess I'll hold off on some of the Eagle paraphernalia I need for my garage. 2021 is sure delivering.
January 11, 20214 yr 5 minutes ago, Cochis_Calhoun said: I keep reading thst Doug partly deserved to go for not telling Wentz what was going on when he was benched, I know he went to a small school but Wentz would have to be denser than kryptonite to not understand that he'd been benched and why he'd been benched. I think a few of the Wentz huggers may be somewhat disappointed by just how little effect 'better' coaching has on a 5 year vet QB who stunk as bad as Wentz has this last season. The only thing I can see with this is that game that hurts came in against the Packers i think everyone got the impression it was for a few gadget plays or a series. Then Wentz never played again. So I'm thinking Hurts went in and if he sucked Doug would of put Wentz back in but he didn't. So at that point Doug should of told Wentz he was done.
January 11, 20214 yr My guess on potentially why Howie has a job: Built a SB winning roster, as we know, but maybe he made a lot of these "getting the band back together" moves with Lurie signing off and wanting to do the same. I'm guessing he is giving him a chance to fix the ship, but it's his last chance.kk
January 11, 20214 yr Lurie: transition to get younger, collect draft picks, focus on mid-term and long-term and not short term (2021). It's almost not fair to Doug, his focus on how to fix right away...Doug thinking how to do better in 2021. My vision, how to have success in the next 4-5 years.

I think most realize it was over how he was planning to fill out his staff (with multiple internal promotions, while those mentioned in large part were not doing a very good job in their current role).
January 11, 20214 yr Jeff sticking up for Howie left and right. So much for accountability. Unreal...FU Lurie!
January 11, 20214 yr Hard to see the Eagles getting a game changer at HC if Roseman is still lurking around the place. Hope they do though, obviously
January 11, 20214 yr "We are only as good as the people they surround ourselves with.” Yet it sure does seem those people are smarter than Howie.
January 11, 20214 yr Why do you feel confident in Howie, is he held accountable for his mistakes? Lurie: reasons he's confident in Howie People Howie surrounds himself with (telling that his first answer is about others not Howie). Cited Joe Douglas and Andrew Berry as getting GM jobs elsewhere. Strong nucleus with Andy Weidl and others. Have to look at the process (dare he say "Trust the Process.). Part of evaluation: if they have guys rated high on their board who get drafted before they get to pick, they at least had it right rating the player. Don't see any reason why they won't return to "pre-eminence."

Right, OK, this actually makes some sense now. If I'm reading this right. Doug wants to try to "bring the band back together" and to compete again in 2021. Howie / Jeff Lurie disagree and think it's time to blow it up and to get younger. That would be a substantial enough of a disagreement to consider moving on.

There have been a few saying that Wentz had a power play and went to Lurie to get rid of Doug. Of course, no proof.

January 11, 20214 yr Question: how much is this decision about Wentz regression and will Wentz be back? Lurie: no, not based on one player or position. But yes have to look at offense regression. The league was up in offensive points and more DPI yet Eagles were low numbers. Emphasis always on elite offense. Defense has variations throughout the year, but you have to be a top offensive unit. Hard to project at the moment that they could be a top offense. but it's more complex than just head coach. Will Wentz be back in 2021: no owner should decide that. Carson to us/me is a QB that first 4 years was elite, comparable to top QBs. 5th year not, for various reasons. They have an assett/talent who wants to win. Heart in the right place, tireless, dedicated, he's what you want. Behooves us as a staff to get him back to the level he's capable of. also understand there are many QBs in their 4th/5th year that have a single year that was bad. Peyton Manning, Big Ben cited. Takes a longer view, this was not the best season for offense and Carson...but very fixable and expect him to realize his potential.
January 11, 20214 yr Lurie saying all the right things about Wentz, but not exactly guaranteeing his return either.
January 11, 20214 yr Q: are you too involved? What is your accountability for the team regressing? Lurie: same involvement for 25 years. What I do is ask a lot of questions. It's allowed us to "have a finger on the pulse" of what takes place. We have a great infrastructure and people in the building. Same people who built the SB team. Track record in 20 years: Div titles, NFCCG, etc. Involvement is good, don't micromanage and trust your people.
January 11, 20214 yr Lurie has defended Howie to a level far greater than Doug or Carson. It’s clear Howie’s going nowhere.
January 11, 20214 yr Just now, EazyEaglez said: He might as well said trust the process. thats what i was thinking. basically we are going to suck the next couple of years. AND its not Howie's fault because we told him to draft for short term.
January 11, 20214 yr Question Les Bowen: draft picks and free agent signings since SB haven't been good. If you have all these great people in the building, why is that? (Boom!) Lurie: have you analyzed every pick and compared to every team? Is this short-term or long-term? You see other teams with good and bad personnel decisions. what about years they didn't have high picks from trading, what about guys you wanted but other teams picked. My job is to evaluate all this, can't speak about it publicly maybe someday write a book about it. Not satisfied even when winning, can always do better. Message to Jim Schwartz after SB: wow that wasn't a good defensive performance. Good against Falcons and Vikings but not Patriots.
January 11, 20214 yr lurie not seeing that howie sucks as a talent evaluator is why nothing will change
