There is zero possibility of a political solution. There can’t be a political solution to a problem that one party sees as morally virtuous and a way to bolster political power. We both know that legislation will go no where, that even if there were legislation it wouldn’t be enforced by the federal government, and that suing the federal government is a dead end.

We are beyond the point of "fixing” illegal immigration because illegal immigration is one party’s political strategy.

And it's the best get out the vote motivator the other side has now that they effed up and overturned Roe.

This is why I don't have kids. It will only get worse. Doesn't mean I have to applaud it, and I still get to call morons out for being morons.

McCain and co. had a good immigration plan. He was kneecapped by the mouth breathers of the right.

No one wants illegal immigrants in their city or town.

So totally cool to divert government funds to fly them to Martha's Vineyard.

The truth is that there is a 0.0% chance that we will solve any large issues, because doing so would require leaders with skill, intellect and a sense of duty. Thanks to primary elections putting in place the most extreme idiots available, and voters that are polarized to punish any compromise, we are totally effed. Maybe...maybe we could come together again for a true emergency (like the 2008 crash), but I doubt it.

Like I started out saying...we get the leaders we deserve.

Speak for yourself. I want lower landscaping bills.

Any bill that gives amnesty to illegals is a fundamentally terrible bill.

And you don’t want them living near you.

COVID was an interesting case study.

Yeah. They did come together to a degree, but that was one was so unique (basically shutting down the whole economy) that they had no choice. If 2008 happened today? I think the minority party would refuse to participate and would simply blame whoever is in the majority. Hell, they almost did that in 2008 when Pelosi gave that ridiculous speech right before the vote and the original TARP bill failed.

To some degree we also have to acknowledge we have a difficult situation on our southern border.

Most border jumpers aren't from Mexico, which we're obliged for many reasons to have a relatively friendly (not open) border with.

We also have a bunch of jobs that our entitled kids aren't willing to do, and I for one don't want to overpay for.

But you're correct that our primary system is a big issue. Solutions are ...

1. Go back to smoke filled rooms of party leaders picking nominees.

2. Something like open primaries + ranked choice voting to ensure moderate candidates aren't shouted out by radicals on either side.

I prefer option 2 but am perfectly ok with 1 if we the people are too stupid.

SPOILER ALERT: the voters are too stupid. Go with #1

Any bill without some measure of amnesty, even one that is carefully defined as it was in McCain's bill, is a failure to address the world as it is rather than the world as you wish it to be.

And I have no issue with immigrants - documented or otherwise - living an hour away.

Probably true. But I'm an eternal optimist.

The "world as it is” is only so because of one political party and ideology that WANTS illegals here. And that is the fundamental problem.

We could deport nearly every illegal. We could make it virtually impossible for them to live in our country. But one side will do everything they can to incentivize them to be here. And then after this hypothetical round of amnesty, the left would just stop enforcing the laws, get millions of new illegals in the country, and demand amnesty for them.

Right… ~50 miles away, only to ever be seen when they do your yard work. Typical NIMBY.

Meanwhile someone else has to have their neighborhood destroyed so you can afford $10 less per month to have your grass cut.

Your fake outrage and outlandish righteous indignation is noted.

At least I'm being obviously tongue in cheek. I mow my own lawn.

Both parties want illegals for different reasons. You think all those businesses employing undocumented migrants are voting Democrat? 🤣

Immigrants don't destroy neighborhoods. We don't need to import people to do that, plenty for Americans willing to do so.

I love this place.

Ranked choice?  So much for one person one vote.

You prefer the most extreme 1/8th on each side of the aisle to pick the nominee?

No, he supports the loser claiming he won.

Yes, how outlandish to point out the world as it actually is. No, both parties do not want illegal immigrants and the test is easy. If democrats suddenly disappeared and the GOP had 100% control, illegal immigration would end in all practical senses and illegals would be deported. That’s the reality of the party and their voters. You used McCain Kennedy as an example. Well, without democrats, that bill would be a complete non starter because it would be far too left leaning, far too hospitable. We’d have the military at the border, we’d have ICE kicking in doors, illegals wouldn’t be able to get drivers licenses or bank accounts, they’d have their assets seized and they’d be deported.

And I’m sorry that you cannot afford to have someone mow your lawn. Thoughts and prayers.

I can afford paying someone. I did for a long time. But I have an acre or so now and I rather enjoy riding on my mower with a vape and getting a timeout.

But you do you dude.

Ah, the big lie is alive and well.

Somebody foolishly thinks that none of the major firms hiring illegals are run by GOP voting people.

The whole point of paying someone is to arbitrage your time! Rather than spending your "timeout” riding some noisy lawn mower, get some peace and quiet!

Oh, sure they are, but without democratic voters the political power that allows this wouldn’t exist. The entire dynamic would be completely upended.

That's because the US would be a fascist hellhole.  And it wouldn't just be illegal immigration, it would be all immigration.
