According to the legal filing, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Michael Kunovich, who died as a result of the incident, and Lt. Jose Jimenez, another responding deputy, acted inappropriately in mistreating the migrant with multiple violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Florida Times-Union reported. The lawyers specifically claim Aguilar Mendez’s limited ability to speak or understand English and Spanish constituted a disability. They allege he was also denied an interpreter at the scene and at the Sheriff’s Office, which would have allowed him to understand his Miranda rights.

February 23, 20241 yr FFS, I wasted money putting a fence around my entire back yard when just a few panels on one side would have kept my dog in.

Or… hear me out… wages might increase to entice actual Americans to become farmers. And then farmers would become wealthy. And then the standard of living of farmers would increase. And then lots of people would want to become farmers. Libertarians used to believe in things like supply and demand and equilibrium wages before the movement got flooded with morons.

February 24, 20241 yr Biden gets another one.... Police have charged Jose Antonio Ibarra with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call and concealing the death of another, UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark said during a news briefing Friday evening. The suspect is not a U.S. citizen, according to authorities.

February 24, 20241 yr Yes, what's holding back young workers from clamoring to work on farms is ... wages. When the only tool you have is a hammer.....
February 24, 20241 yr Oh the concept of market equilibrium of wages? Not sure why nobody thought of that yet, but we really should give it a try, I bet it'll close that 2.4M worker gap in no time! We need more of these big-brain 90th percentile IQ ideas to fix all the problems we're seeing.
February 24, 20241 yr Average wages for farmhands in the US is around $16/hr based on a cursory Google search. Let's say locking down the border and kicking out all the non-citizen migrants forces farms to double the salary. Even triple it. And let's say for argument's sake that all these Americans clamoring for menial jobs at good wages decide to move out to the Midwest and forgo other options like plumbing and carpentry that likewise are facing a labor shortage and wouldn't typically require the kind of physical and cultural dislocation becoming a farm worker does. What happens then? Cost of producing cash crops rises. Cost of US grown food rises. Soybean exports to China crash. But hey, at least we kept the beaners out right?

February 24, 20241 yr I'm not familiar enough with what a farmhand does to know how automation would play into things. So much of modern farming is automated not to a high degree, but wage pressures may create a market for further automation. It's funny to see the same folks who claim higher minimum wages will exacerbate cause job loss to automation when fast food workers are the subject, but wage inflation to "give Americans the jobs migrants are taking" is just sound policy 😆
February 24, 20241 yr You’re all too late… The massive majority of farmland in the Midwest is for feed crops/grains which is already harvested by equipment (automated). Most fresh produce, that is picked by hand, is grown in Mexico and shipped in. California is the #1 state for growing fresh produce, and yes, picked by a majority of migrant workers… probably for cash… no taxes… and their employers get away with it…
