Yeah there’s a tendency to overreact here.  But the larger point is that Howie and Nick continue to misjudge the talent on their roster.   Howard was a. Pro Bowler with Chicago before he came here and is probably the only "between the tackles” guy they have. And he’s relatively low mileage because he’s been on the shelf since the shoulder injury and by all accounts had a strong camp and has been practicing well.

I guess I just can’t fathom why it took nearly half the season to activate a guy like that.  Then again, I can’t fathom why they ran the ball once in the first half a few weeks ago so…

They seemed like they had an aversion to running the ball period. I never understood what happened to Howard two years ago. He like destroyed the Packers and we never saw him again. I’ve never saw a player basically lose as season over a stinger. Maybe they shouldn’t have kept all those linebackers over him, but honestly I doubt they would’ve used him even if he were on the roster. I hope the coach keeps working to establish the run game and use more play action.

Pretty sure the talent has been misjudged on this team for over a decade so I would like to just stick to that's a Howie issue.

It's not like any other teams have been dying to get Howard. Teams simply want more versitilty then he offers. Once they face some tougher run defenses that take away the run between the tackles Howard will again be benched.

Well I hope not, but I’m not confident the coach will stay with the run game regardless.

Two of the top run defenses on the bill Sunday (Broncos) and next weekend (Saints) ... dare I say, it'll be a "good test"??

It should be,  I like Howard a lot and guys like him are still needed but, in a very limited role especially when you play tougher teams. If they are playing from behind he is usless

Could be we are not playing from behind but they completely shut him down too.  Sure will make things interesting to watch how this unfolds.

I think that all threw us for a loop because I remember all of us here were discussing how it was possible for someone to be out for so long over a stinger. It just made no kind of sense.....

That is the game where it was rumored the Lurie grilled Doug for running the ball too much. They probably don’t even win that game if they didn’t run the ball.

First, I'm not sure he's our best RB. I am not surprised, however, how well he's been running for us. A lot of fans have claimed he was washed up, basing that assumption on his poor YPC average in his Miami stint. Howard is not "washed up." He's exactly what we're seeing him as --- an effective downhill runner with enough size to break tackles, carry a large workload, and wear down defenses. The reason I don't think he's our "best" RB is because he's never really been a large factor as a receiver. Sanders, Gainwell, and Scott are all good RBs also. I'm not sure if giving Sanders 20 carries a game will ever be a good idea. So Howard is probably the best workhorse in the stable. But Sanders can do things Howard can't. Gainwell is a rookie with a lot of growing to do, but he's viewed more as a receiving specialist at this stage. Scott is a dependable backup that is capable of being in on any down.

I've been high on Howard since Miami waived him last year. Had our coach been willing to use him (like he did in his original stint here), we may have won a couple more games late last season. I'm just glad he's getting a chance now. The other 3 backs are too similar. Howard gives us a different type of back, which is important. The other thing that I think is really boosting our run game is keeping Hurts out of the shotgun .

Agree.  I like the thunder and lightning approach with Sanders and Howard once Sanders comes back.  This team doesn't have an every down back.

I think Howard showed his value today. A good change of pace from our other RBs. Never understood why we let him go in the first place, and why we waited so long to activate him after we got him back.

Agreed. He's got a place on this roster in the medium term I think. He does what you need him to do... He gets his head down and gets the positive yards. He's not flashy and he's not going to break you out a huge huge gain but he's going to keep going forwards.

Lets make sure we have a lead, and use him to the Max especially in the second half.

Change in Philosophy. Siri ideas in training camp about pass pass were completely Wrong. After the Run game was resurrected, he became a necessity.

I'd say Howard (and the running game in general) passed that "test" playing against one of the best run defenses in the league ... our top 2 backs (Howard and Scott) combining for 164 yards on the ground (Howard with a 6.9 ypc average and Scott with an even more impressive 7.4 ypc).  Nicely done!  :flex:

Just one in what will be many "tests" ahead ... hope to see more of the same type of game plan where we really focus to establish the run which clearly opens up everything else (and keeps the opposing offense off the field which minimizes any opportunity for them to get into a rhythm as we saw last night).  I was wondering if the Detroit game may have been more of an anomaly and shouldn't be expected to be the norm.  We saw it again against SD who like Detroit have a poor run defense so thought maybe Sirianni was just exploiting a weakness (which is a smart strategy).  To try to scheme to get the run going against a strong run defense is a different animal.  Was wondering if he might revert back to being pass happy.  Glad to see that wasn't the case.

And he is 27. We need a back like him, needed a back like him, will need a back like him.

I still don’t understand how the Eagles went to the Super Bowl off the backs of two power backs decided to completely abandon the concept and basically went to speedy smaller backs only. The speedy smaller back in Sproles couldn’t stay healthy. I don’t know if Howard should be the only big back. I think they should draft another power like back for the rotation too. They should embrace the power run mentality to go with a tough defense.

Agreed, very nice to see. A few times Howard got stuffed and then they switched it up and went with the shifter Scott then back to Howard where he broke a couple of nice ones. Absolutely nothing wrong with balance especially when you have a QB who is not only young but, isn't the most accurate ( even though he was on point yesterday) . If hurts can grow from this then maybe they can start passing a bit more ..... I don't want to say that to loud lol

That’s part of the development process bud. Heck most of the young quarterbacks right now aren’t exactly lighting it up. The process takes time. Not sure why so many people think guys like Herbert (even he has struggled at points this season) are the norm. Young quarterbacks taking time to develop is the norm.

I agree, it was just rough seeing him go out there and not really improving but, then again neither was Nick. Goes hand in hand now.that Nick has progressed so can Hurts.

On a side note I personally would prefer to se the Eagles just beating teams up on offense and defense with a power run game and a physical defense. That is more like Philly than this pass, pass, pass, and punt crap anyway.
