Now it may be facing an even greater challenge from within https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/antiscience-beliefs-jeopardize-us-democracy/ Quote A large number of major party contenders for political office this year took antiscience positions against evolution, human-induced climate change, vaccines, stem cell research, and more. Such positions are surprising because the economy is such a big factor in this election, and half the economic growth since World War II can be traced to innovations in science and technology. Partisans at both ends of the political spectrum have been guilty of science denialism. But the Republican version is particularly dangerous because it attacks the validity of science itself. U.S. voters must push candidates and elected officials to express their views on the major science questions facing the nation or risk losing out to those countries with reality-based policies.
June 21, 20232 yr More Free Speech from Twitter Overlord, and CIS, Elon Musk. Yep, all about keeping up freedom of speech. Thin-skinned puss bag, turdflakes. Yup.
June 21, 20232 yr He stopped pretending a long time ago but still fun to see him kick and scream like a child
June 21, 20232 yr It's cute that people are acting like Twitter never banned anyone prior to Musk taking over
June 21, 20232 yr Just now, mikemack8 said: It's cute that people are acting like Twitter never banned anyone prior to Musk taking over they banned lots of people. including lots of leftists as well as righties. the hypocrisy here is that Musk is claiming "free speech" yet is specifically curbing speech that is used by the left (rightly or wrongly). which is exactly the sort of thing he claims to be against. I don't care that much, twitter is a cesspool and the fewer people pay attention to it the better off the nation's mental health will be. but he's clearly biasing against the left in the way the right imagines it's been biased against the right.

Oh yeah, the funny thing in all of this is how much of a massive hypocrite he turned out to be. Ah well, if he destroys Twitter we'd all be better off.
June 21, 20232 yr I use and appreciate twitter for what it is, and have yet to find a reasonable alternative that's as efficient. That being said, I'm fairly indifferent to whatever direction Musk decides to go with, but it's been thoroughly amusing to see him concoct one half-baked idea after another and then act like a few eggs are bound to be broken when making an omelet. I'm just thankful this whole fiasco has allowed more people to finally see just how much of an ass clown he truly is.

I follow a bunch of scientists, artists, and pretty much anything involving the space program. There was a mass exodus when Elon began showing his true colors, and the artist community jumped ship early. Some of the science accounts I followed have moved behind paywalls, and I would have to be verified to see their stuff now.

I'm starting to simply decide it's not good for me to be engaged even for the "good things" Twitter does. the only real value is if some major thing is happening live it can be an ok source for early but unverified information that isn't available elsewhere. otherwise its main benefit appears to be the ability to share things readily here lol. trying to divert towards reading more long-form publications, be they topical pieces published by whomever or just books on recent/current events. Reddit's API shenanigans has me re-evaluating how I'm spending my time on this stuff. I'm pulling away from Reddit as well as Twitter concurrently. Reddit aversion temporarily pushed me to consume more Twitter, which got me to a "this is unhealthy" point very quickly

Make a second account, and post a really horribly stupid solution to a real problem you have. People will climb over themselves to tell you that you're wrong, and sometimes, they have great solutions. However, it is a spawning cesspool

Twitter content is a fraction of what it was before Elon's takeover. It's trending towards irrelevant, but I have not found another app with the same reach yet.

However, it is a spawning cesspool I've generally had a good experience with Reddit, though most of the common subreddits are cesspools. Certain communities are pretty good. But you can find a lot of good gems for specific interests. People generally suck, so whenever there are a lot of people - especially of the anonymous variety - there's going to be some human filth to wade through. I don't see any way around that short of tyranny, and I'd rather deal with a cesspool of jerks than tyrannical overlords. /u/spez is hellbent on destroying it though.
June 21, 20232 yr I hate Reddit's formatting for whatever reason. It has great information on certain subjects but I just can't get into it.

June 21, 20232 yr He's not even gaslighting people, he's just mentally ill. Dude's had a traumatic childhood so it's understandable to a degree, but geez, what a nut case.
June 22, 20232 yr Zuckerberg is telling Elon to name the place and time for a cage match. I for one, would enjoy watching the two of them smack each other around.
