June 29, 20205 yr There was clearly white people they were waving the guns at though. To say that thing was racial is idiotic. 1 hour ago, JohnSnowsHair said: right. that's all I'm saying. and if they had stayed on their terrace, making it clear they had weapons but not literally swinging the weapon wildly in the direction of the protesters, this video and story would have gotten no traction. I have little doubt that 100s, perhaps 1,000s, of people have open carried, standing on their porches or stoops, in front of their homes and businesses as protests walked past in a show of force to prevent rioting/looting. they didn't make the news because they didn't wave their muzzles threateningly at protesters while demonstrating little knowledge of firearm safety. I think there was a baker shop that had shotguns that were protecting their store during the first week of protests. I don’t remember how they handled their guns but it was news

Fact is, there is a large percentage of this country that is not financially responsible. Well, considering it was a reply to my point about wages, I assumed he was trying to make the point that the reason people can't live off lowskill wages is because they're financially irresponsible. There will always be a good portion of financially irresponsible people, but it's just a fact that what people were paid for those same jobs 40 or 50 years ago doesn't get you as far in today's economy. The point is that you can be living very frugally and still not be able to afford basic necessities in many parts of the country, and since most of the manufacturing sector has disappeared, our non-college educated population is trying to survive on these jobs more than ever in what has largely become a service-based economy.

That's fair but what exactly is "livable" wage? Giving McDonald's workers $15 an hour would still only be just over 30k. Trying to take care of a family of 4 on that isn't going to fly. You can't be handing out 50k+ salaries to fast food workers either.

Trying to take care of a family of 4 on that isn't going to fly. I agree that you can't expect to take care of a large family on that kind of wage. I'm generally talking about individuals. Let's face it, the people who tend to have the most kids also tend to be the ones least financially capable of supporting them, which is why I'm as pro-birth control as you can be, but it's not enough. If the fear of poverty was sufficient to deter people from reproducing, then you wouldn't have such high birth rates in the developing world. Supporting a family is a whole different ballgame requiring a broader network of support than just a minimum wage. I think the only long-term solution to reducing the amount of children living in poverty is better education, so let's fund our schools better.

Quote I think there was a baker shop that had shotguns that were protecting their store during the first week of protests. I had to hunt, I assume you mean this? https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/owners-of-corbos-bakery-arm-themselves-to-defend-business-from-looters-vandals it made some local news, and it doesn't seem like it escalated much. they got a lot of support from the community it appears as well: that link should take you to 44s in, where a protester asked the guy with the gun in front for the bakery "what do you want to say to everybody, anything?" "keep on doing what you're doing" (presumably referring to the peaceful protests), and someone in the crowd said "I get it man, ya'all trying to protect ya'all ****" I don't really see these as comparable situations.

I had an account for my RE business and then I followed a bunch of sports related accounts. I'll occasionally add political stuff, but I don't check Twitter very often on my own. I usually end up in a Twitter hole from clicking a Tweet here and falling in. It can be both parts entertaining and extremely depressing.
