Gun violence has soared to levels unheard of in other European states: 62 people died in shootings in Sweden last year

62 people? in the whole country, over the whole year? that's less than 1 per 100,000 people.

hell, in a low year we're over 20k and that's excluding suicides. our "safest" states have 10x as many gun related deaths.

The issues with guns/bombs in Sweden are quite real though of course don't reach the numbers of gun violence in big US cities. All the shootings are in the immigrant areas and they are all gang related and connected with their various turf wars (narcotics is one but straight forward fraud of the welfare system dwarfs the numbers associated with narcotics).  There are some incidents of innocent bystanders being killed and one or two where the person shot was mistaken for the real target but the vast majority are gang members killing members of rival gangs.  The really sad part is that the majority of the people both doing the killing and being killed are under 20, many under 18.  They are all just basic foot soldiers.

Right.

My main point here is that this "crisis of violence" is pretty relative, and I think the headline is rather over the top. Less than 1 in 100k gun deaths is perhaps bad relatively for Sweden, but it's not a "crisis"

Sure though we definitely all consider it a crisis over here.  Left, right, old, young, immigrants, native Swedes, etc. everyone is quite upset with how things have developed.  I suppose the "crisis" is more the trend and speed at which the problem has developed.  Sweden has gone from the bottom of the lists in Europe for violence to the top in less than 20 years.

in 2017 there were 43 gun deaths, in 2022 - the highest year - there were 62.

it's a jump, but proportionally it seems like there would be bigger issues to be concerned about. Rape and other violent crime for instance.

homicides are also pretty concentrated among criminals it seems, so while that's certainly a problem I would put other violent crimes ahead of it in terms of impact to law-abiding citizens.

I’m including shootings and bombings that don’t result in murders. Take all violent crimes from guns and look at the numbers over the last 20 years  2015/16 was the big migrant swell but the ramp started back before 2010.  note: I don’t blame the immigrants.  Yes, some small chunk of them drive the issues but the real problem is political with the big welfare system and very poor integration solutions

btw - The rape stats here aren’t an issue. The numbers changing reflect the laws changing and also the media coverage plus metoo. Any real increase in incident is minuscule. That rape increase narrative is just a right wing bs talking point.

I didn't pick rape for any reason other than I consider it the second most heinous violent crime after homicide.

She's complaining that cultures who don't have any written communication and still these days rely on oral tradition don't contribute to editing Wiki entries on a computer?

Something must be done about this!
