Phillies acquire defensive wizard Harrison Bader from Twins

Ken Rosenthal, Dan Hayes, and Matt Gelb

July 31, 2025 Updated 1:10 pm EDT

The Phillies on Thursday traded for Minnesota Twins outfielder Harrison Bader, league sources confirmed to The Athletic. The Phillies are sending outfielder Hendry Mendez and righty Geremy Villoria to the Twins, according to league sources.

A February signee for a modest $6.25 million, Bader has exceeded expectations this season. Largely brought in as a defensive specialist, the 2021 Gold Glove winner is having his best offensive season since 2021. An inconsistent bat the past three seasons, Bader is hitting for power (.439 slugging percentage with 12 homers) and getting on base (33.9 percent of the time) more than he has since his St. Louis days.

Defensively, Bader is a wizard, providing dynamite defense in left and center field. Even though he’s 31, Bader isn’t slowing down. He’s produced eight defensive runs saved in left field and three in center in about a third of the time.

A bit of a hired gun, Bader is playing for his sixth team since 2022, including making stops with both New York clubs. While the bulk of his postseason success occurred in 2022 when he hit five homers for the Yankees, Bader has an .809 OPS in 72 playoff plate appearances

The White Sox are a poorly run organization. This is the reason why they’re gonna have to pick up that $20 million option next year and he’s gonna be the same player next year and not be able to trade them for what they want. They’re so unrealistic on what his actual value is because they still living in what he did in 2023 when he’s not that guy anymore.

I like Bader a lot in CF as an everyday player. This makes both Rojas and Kepler redundant. Cut Kepler, Marsh and Rojas can platoon in left, or demote Rojas and bring up Crawford and platoon him with Marsh in left.

They gave up absolutely nothing for Bader...so good on that. Meh addition to a lineup that needed something more.

I view this season as their absolute last shot with a bleak future over the next 3-5, so I just don't understand why they didn't give up more to get more.

I also don't think Crawford is a fit with the Phillies at all now (for this run this year). Bader gets the job done in CF. Crawford's future is in CF and he's never going to come in as a 21 year old rookie and outslug Marsh playing in LF. The best outfield they can come up with in October is going to be Marsh/Bader/Castellanos. Platooning Crawford for a couple months and giving him 1/3 the at-bats isn't going to help him either. Might as well keep him down in AAA now.

They're both lefties....

If Crawford was a RHB he would have been up here already

I think you can platoon Crawford with marsh in LF and also give Bader a day off or two so Crawford is essentially playing 4-5 times a week. Remember he’s going to play more games than he ever has if he’s on the postseason roster. So allowing him to play 4-5 times a week is still enough time and gives him more rest of a longer season that he’s going to endure

I still think Wood could end up in the pen. Wouldn't be a bad move, and with Painter it would give them two arms on top of Robinson. Robby T will screw it all up because he has no feel for pitching in big spots, but whatever.

Agree, but maybe slow the roll on someone not being able to out hit Marsh unless their name is Rojas 😂

Crawford has hit both lefties and righties well this season. Who knows if it will translate in the majors, but it’s worth a try.

I know they’re both lefties and that’s not ideal for a platoon with marsh but Crawford’s numbers and slashes in the minor league against a left-handed pitching this year shows that he can hit left-handed pitching well. Whether that continues in the majors who knows. But it’s better than having marsh hit LHP which he has shown he can’t. His slashes this year against LHP are .364/.408/.515/.923

Tbh if i were Dave I’d look to deal marsh with a controllable year left and see if he can acquire another BP piece then call up Crawford to play LF if they get a solid BP arm. I’m doubting they do cause i don’t think they want to rely on a rookie LF but it’s an option if they believe they want to play Crawford everyday and that Bader should also be playing everyday

I think Painter will and should stay out of the pen now that their big deadline deal was a BP arm. He's struggling right now as it is, specifically with getting deeper into starts. Just my opinion, but I don't see much purpose for Painter or Crawford with the big league club this year.

Painter needs major league experience this year. He’s pitched 6 innings his last two starts and has pitched well in those starts.

Tbh if you really wanna remake your outfield, you could theoretically trade Crawford, marsh (has a controllable year left and can be a major league player they use) and a couple prospects to the guardians for Kwan if they’re willing to accept that deal (highly doubtful). In the off-season move Castellanos with his last year (much more easy to move off of) and pick up bader’s option. And then go hard after Kyle Tucker to play right field. You basically upgraded your entire outfield from what you have now and you’re not relying on Crawford to become the player that you want. You’re essentially getting what you expect him to become in Kwan

The outfield is still a mess

So I guess that’s it then? We’re all done with trades?

Of course

Honestly, I think trading Marsh for a RHB makes sense if you're going to bring up Crawford

Good points

Good news my game used Sánchez jersey came in so expect him to be awful the rest of the year. Threw a complete game in it vs. nationals last year and got a win against the blue jays

I am hoping we're not done and can add Ramon Laureano and/or Steven Kwan.

3 hours to go. Come on. Dombroski.
