A lot of people are poo pooing the hire. Saying he’s an all or nothing GM. Will trade the farm for major league talent and likes to spend money, both of which the Phillies don’t have. So for me, it’s a perplexing hire. Does he have a track record of at least developing farm systems?

He has a track record of winning unlike most of the garbage this team has had leading it over the years.

dave is a breath of fresh air, he actually says we need pitchers that will go into the seventh inning meaning he's going to get some good pitchers and not crap pitchers and says that we need a star reliever and closer and add depth, i love this guy already.

McCann signed with Mets so Real has one less suitor

Dombroski is old and loves to trade away young talent for vets to try and win now.  Soooo..... now what?

Yeah his whole MO is building a champion from scratch by bringing in vets... not sure how that’s going to work with the bare cupboard he’s got at the minor league level. Guess we will see.

But his track record involves trading younger players for vets to win in the short term... what does he have to work with in order to do that here?

Well...Mickey Moniak was the first pick of an entire draft class!

Sooooooo, hire a GM that likes to trade away extremely talented players from your existing farm team for older stars?

Does this mean there will be a priority on building a farm system now? I mean, that alone would be a step in the right direction.

This will be extremely unpopular, but Realmuto can kick rocks if that $200 million number is even CLOSE to true. 4/5 years at $25 mill a year and I'm fine.

Yeah that’s why that hired didn’t make any sense besides the fact he’s won Ws in the past. If you had a fully stocked farm system and you were going to build the way then fine (frankly it’s much tougher to do now in baseball without a good far system in place). However your prospects outside of like four or five of them are not very good. And it’s not like John Middleton has shown he’s just going to spend it in enormous amount of money during a pandemic. Heck there’s been more rumors about them trying to unload players.

Snell being traded to the Padres. They will be a fun team to watch this year, seems like they are really going for it.

Harper should have gone there - then maybe he'd have a chance at a ring before he retires

And they still have Gore the top pitching prospect in baseball

I'm thinking our Phils are waiting for the right time to strike.

Not really sure why you want me to think about that disappointing year again. I'd rather not remember.

Anyway, I just said they'd be a force not to give them the world series trophy tomorrow.

it sucks i know but that's a similar way the phillies were built, actually the braves were built that way years before the phillies won a the world series in 08 and that never delivered.

The Phillies have acquired left-hander José Alvarado from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-way trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club announced today. To complete the deal, the Phillies have sent left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to the Dodgers, who will send infielder Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later to the Rays.

To be fair, the Braves did win the World Series in 1995.

The issue with those teams was they had zero bullpen. That could work in the regular season when Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz all going 7+ innings per start. But in the postseason the innings would be more taxing and 7 innings became more of a ceiling than a floor. Think about the 1996 World Series -- Wohlers gave that away by hanging a slider.

Rays dumping pitchers. Padres got Snell, and now they are going after Darvish too.

The fact that Maddux and Glavine never had to throw strikes in the regular season was also problematic. Glavine’s poor playoff record is no aberration.

Maddux had one game called fairly in the last decade of his career and the Braves are still crying about it (the Livan Hernandez/Eric Gregg playoff game).

Uh...Glavine was the World Series MVP and had a career 3.30 ERA in the postseason. Maddux was 3.27. They both had losing records thanks to no run support.
