Stewart was much funnier as the host compared to Noah.

Noah is a likable guy. I want to like it. But he's just not that good.  

I think some of it is the writing. When Stewart took over the daily show, the writing staff was REALLY good. So many of the writers and "beat reporters" who contributed content used the success to further their careers, but that ended up draining the show of some talent. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the writers went to Oliver's show, because while I find Oliver's progressivism a bit much to take in one sitting, the writing is good. 

Stewart's standup was fine, but he really shined in the Daily Show format because his style just complemented a "faux anchorman" role really well. 

Noah's standup is better. I still don't think he's all that funny, but he's still better as a standup than as a host of the daily show.
