February 27, 20214 yr I cannot speak for others, but the issues with Trump and the border policy was the child separation, not the fact that children were being detained. Children caught crossing the border illegally with their families should not be separated. THAT is what Trump was doing, to "punish" border crosses by literally taking their kids from them. We're STILL trying to get some of these families reunited. But minors, unaccompanied or otherwise, still need to be detained. So yeah, there will be "kids in cages," there always have been as long as we don't have open borders (which nobody except immigration extremists want, despite projections by the right). The key difference is that we're no longer taking kids from their parents.

For all we know they aren’t really their parents

For all we know they aren’t really their parents That's fair, but in most cases it's not that difficult to discern if the child is comfortable with the alleged parent/guardian. Let's not pretend that the whole policy of separating children from their families is justified because of an outlier situation. Trump specifically sought to separate children to demonstrate brutality, under the rationale that it would reduce those seeking to cross the border. That's a immoral cruelty that we cannot tolerate. But by all means do what you can to ensure that the child is traveling willingly with family. If that means a temporary separation while minors are interviewed in a safe space to confirm the story with whomever they're traveling with, I could understand that as long as it's documented and that families are immediately reunited if there's no suspicion of trafficking or the like.

Not cruel at all. If it prevents people from coming to the border then it potentially saved children from parents who would make a reckless trek with children in tow. It saves children from the risks that danger poses. Also, even if children being brought over by strangers is the minority of cases, that small minority potentially represents the greatest national security threat, if not a threat to those children themselves being trafficked
