The #Eagles have restructured Darius Slay’s contract by adding 2 void years to his deal. This dropped his cap hit from $15.75M to $6.61M, clearing $9.14M in cap space. Slay will be with the Eagles through 2023, but the Eagles will pay him through 2025 now.

Also, that is a bit deceiving.  They won't pay him through 2025.  In 2024 the rest of the prorated bonus will roll up and hit the cap.  In 2025 he will be off the books.  Without seeing the numbers I can only estimate, but I am guessing it would be to the tune of $3.656 million.

So yeah, another player that we are getting a dead cap hit on who is no longer on the team.  My "favorite" Howie move <_<  2022 is going to be a mess because of this cap maneuver that he employs.

Because my OCD made me..... Here is what we are looking at in 2023 as of today in terms of dead cap hits on players no longer on the team:

Fletcher Cox - One fake year.  $3.6 million
Javon Hargrave - Two fake years.  $5 million
Isaac Seumalo - Two fake years.  $2 million
and now Slay - Two fake years.  3.656 million

$14.2 million in dead cap space.  Awesome start to 2023 Howie!!!!!

does the kelce signing (+1year) affect this?

Maybe?  Outside of the what Rapoport tweeted, I haven't seen details on either of the major cap sites.  He was scheduled to be a $7.2 million dead cap hit next year.

I also haven’t seen details but Bowen says it does lower his number this year even though it’s a one year deal

Maybe spread over three years?

That would make little sense because that's kind of what we had prior to this news.

And there really is no such thing as spreading over 3+ years on multiple.  Voided years roll up to the first year of the voided contract.  That use to be a thing in the late 90s and early 2000s, but that changed with the CBA (the one before 2006)  So above, its not spread out to 2024, it rolls up to 2022.

Ok, so if sportrac is to believed, his 2022 dead cap hit will be 15 million.  Prior to this signing, his contract would only have had a 2022 dead cap hit of 7.2 million.

His cap hit this year was 8.4 million.  It's now 4 million.

So unless I'm missing something, in order to lower this year's cap by $4.4 million, Howie INCREASED his dead cap hit next year by 7.8 million.

That's how I see it too. And what about Slay? I'm sure he's done something similar there as well.

It's time for all Eagles fans to accept. Howie isn't a cap genius. He manipulates the cap sure but at some point it's going to be a real issue.

2021 - 6.6 million
2022 - 22 million  (Dead cap of 15.6 if cut)
2023 - 23 million (Dead cap of 10 million if cut)
2024 - 4.5 million in dead cap

Massively overpaying him aside I can live with the restructure of pushing 4.5 in dead cap in 2024 via voided years IF Howie chills the F out on these voided contracts and doesn't start using 2024's cap space as a piggy bank. We are still in a position that if he sucks and we cut him next year, we can.  The problem with this year (and last year) is we had virtually no cap flexibility and were forced to make irrational moves.

15.6 million in dead cap of Slay is cut next year? Sweet Jesus. For a 31/32 year old CB who's play has declined the last 2 years.

This is why I was telling everyone to pump their brakes last year when they were passing around the meme about how Howie was paying next to nothing for him in 2020.   The huge salary bonus plus MUCH higher base salary in future years made keeping him in future years much more painful.

Agreed. And this is my issue with Howie. We need to rebuild and all he's doing is prolonging the pain. I'd rather we barely get under the cap this year than restructure guys that's going to impact the cap in future years.

Yeah as really not a lot of people like him. As they want Howie gone there!

MORTENSEN: "Yes, Jalen Hurts is the guy. Jeffrey Lurie, the owner of the Eagles, has basically sent the message to his personnel department and Howie Roseman that he wants to do everything he can to help Jalen Hurts be successful and NOT bring in somebody to compete for the job. Now, they have a new head coach in Nick Sirianni, he understands what the owner wants, the owner gets. And I might remind people on this one: last year, the owner was in favor of drafting Jalen Hurts. That created a ripple effect. But one thing that happened with the Eagles, screams to me, why Ja’Marr Chase should be in play with this pick, is that they did not stay true to their draft board. And their personnel department has a lot of Ozzie Newsome disciples from Baltimore. Ozzie always stays true to the draft board. Somehow, they got off the draft board and at No. 21 they took Jalen Reagor, the wide receiver, instead of Justin Jefferson, who had a higher grade on the Eagles’ board. How do you explain that? We don’t have enough time. But Jalen Hurts is the quarterback for this year, they don’t want to bring in competition for him.”

well-thats-not.jpg

I'd rather them build the team out than draft a QB this year.  I'm not particularly enamored with any of them that would fall to us at 6 anyway.  Get Hurts some supporting cast upgrades and if he sucks we'll be in position to get one next year anyway.

Dallas gave Dak 160 million

paco thinking: Hmmm.... with a total contact that big for only 4 years, it can't be that much guaranteed.  Especially for a player that missed most of last year and played the second half of the previous year hobbled and ineffective

Quote

The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have agreed to a four-year, $160 million contract, including $126 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

This would usually be the time I'd trash the Cowboys and Jerry for how they handled their QB situation.

But for some reason, I feel like we don't really have much room to talk.

I mean, I definitely *want* to.  It feels only natural and right to do so.

But then I look at Howie and how he's completely raw-dogged this franchise and.....yeah.  I find myself without the proper words.

Maybe Dak will have a crappy opening week because McCarthy calls a bad game, and they'll start Ben DiNucci instead and we can call it even?

TV Deals end in 22 as well so Dax gonna get paid AGAIN.

This is what is interesting.....

It's a 4 year contract extension.  And he was on the franchise tag last year.  Therefore he would be under contract from 2021-2024 and an UDFA in 2025.

Sporttrac does not have numbers yet.  But they do have the following (empty) table

Quote
YEAR   AGE BASE SALARY CAP HIT DEAD CAP YEARLY CASH
2021 Contract details by year 28 - - - -
2022 Contract details by year 29 - - - -
2023 Contract details by year 30 - - - -
2024 Contract details by year 31 - - - -
2025 Contract details by year 32 - - - -
2026 Contract details by year 33 - - - -
2025 Free Agent Year 34 UFA UDFA

If I were to GUESS, I bet you Dallas did two things.

1) Give him an obscenely low base salary this year and next.  The bulk of his base salary will be in 23 and 24

2) Pull a Howie and built in void years in 25 and 26, thus lowering his cap hit over the 4 years and taking a dead hit in 25.  (Detailed bonus info isn't available from what I've seen, but the signing bonus was 66 million.  So If they did that, the signing bonus would account for 11 million each of the 4 years and 22 in the voided year)

If this is the case, this makes a TON of sense because his contract is modeled around the upcoming TV deal.  Dak is happy because he gets paid.  Dallas will be happy because his contract will be relative to the cap (and projected increase).

Of course, this is speculation on my part, because we don't have any numbers and I'm just some idiot fan who obsesses over the cap making a wild guess.  But if I am on track and it plays out that way..... and Dak stays healthy..... and COVID has little to no effect on the upcoming season..... This will end up looking like a reasonable contract.
