July 6, 20241 yr From Woj Free agent forward Caleb Martin has agreed on a four-year deal guaranteed for more than $32 million with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told ESPN on Saturday. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40506623/sources-caleb-martin-joining-76ers-likely-slots-starter
July 6, 20241 yr If they trade for DFS and get Highsmith for defense, Morey’s quote saying we plan to be the best team in the East might come to fruition.

Thats yuge.

July 6, 20241 yr Woj is specifying that Martin is the 4 man. Which is pretty big news considering PG apparently didnt playing the 4 much, but played like 84% of his minutes there so a lot of people assumed he was the 4 here. It also means that Martin backed up by Marcus Morris and rookie Bona likely completes the picture at the PF spot. So, maybe we focus our efforts on improving backup PG and find a way to land Tyus Jones.
July 6, 20241 yr I dont understand how they convinced him to take more than 1 year. Maybe he cant math? This is crazy.
July 6, 20241 yr according to some poster, this is the math we are working with. 4 more vet min openings, and whatever KJ Balloon contract fits under the 2nd apron. 4 more vet mins. And if they’re willing to go to right up to the 2nd apron, it appears they can give KJ approximately a 3-42M deal where years 2 and 3 are UNG. I suspect they don’t go that high, however. 3-30M puts them right between the 1st and 2nd aprons with some wiggle room. 10M is a nice round number.

July 6, 20241 yr So if Martin pans out he is basically what they were hoping Thybulle/Tucker would be

July 6, 20241 yr That’s a great signing. Didn’t know if they’d get him but once the market started drying up there wasn’t a ton of money out there. I’m surprised he turned down 5 for $65. Basically $13 mil a year. Plus it’s in Miami with no state tax. It wasn’t too far off from his $15 mil he wanted. His agent kind of fumbled the bag thinking there’d be someone with a better deal than that Frankly i think when the next cba is up for discussions i wonder if the middle tier players try to make changes because really it feels the new rules hurt them the most.

That first year of the contract is likely ballooned up. I wouldn’t be surprised if at the deadline they use KJ and either oubrr or Martin (on nice contracts) to try and match salary to get another impact starter.
July 6, 20241 yr I was for the clear as much cap space as they could for the 2024 off-season and holding steady until the offseason. In theory it made the most sense to give yourself the best opportunity to have the highest chance to win a title, even if it was super slim they could pull it off. Frankly, I thought they were going to F it up. Cause everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face and it’s only as good if you can actually pull it off. Didn’t think things would fall in their favor and embiid would ask for a trade out at the end of next season. But I give the Sixers and Morey a ton of credit. Everything kind of worked out for them and they absolutely crushed it. They might not win a title but this is 100% the best team the 76ers have had since that Jimmy Butler team and maybe since their last finals teams. Hopefully embiid and Paul George stay healthy because if they do, this is probably the best two year window for us to win anything that we have seen (outside of that Butler) team in the last 20 years.

As happy as we are with the result, it’s crazy to think about how lucky they were for things to fall their way and let this happen. George could have easily been traded to Golden State, Martin could have, and should have, taken that deal with the Heat before he opted out. Some times it’s about creating the opportunity for good things to happen and getting some good breaks.

Actually thought spike and michael levin nailed it on their podcast when discussing all the events the sixers had to have go their way for them to windup with Paul George, Embiid and Maxey. Needed Embiid’s medicals to be red flagged in his draft and bucks to screw up taking Parker. Needed him to finally get healthy and develop into what everyone thought. Needed the Covid year to hit and cancel an ncaa tournament where Maxey could’ve thrived and went higher. Also needed muscala to hit his shot to even have a pick to take Maxey. Needed the new cba to effect how teams operated, the clippers to say no to any sign and trade to the warriors and PG to actually make the decision to leave LA. Can add to that oubre to sign a minimum here and work or and now Martin turning down Miami’s money. like levin said in their podcast, it’s going to end badly cause all things do but right now it feels really Fing good especially considering where we were a couple years back with Harris and Horford.
