How can the sixers clear cap space?

The Sixers are currently $29.7 million over the salary cap for the 2024–25 season, so clearing space to re-sign Guerschon Yabusele—or chase another free agent—would require some bold moves. Here’s how they could do it:

🧹 1. Trade a Big Contract

  • Paul George ($49.2M) or Joel Embiid ($51.4M) are massive cap hits, but trading either would be seismic and unlikely.

  • More realistic: move Kelly Oubre Jr. ($7.98M) or Andre Drummond ($5M) to a team with cap space or a trade exception.

  • They also hold three trade exceptions (up to $7.97M) that could help facilitate deals.

🧾 2. Waive Non-Guaranteed or Minimum Contracts

  • Players like Ricky Council IV, Jared Butler, and Justin Edwards are on partially or non-guaranteed deals. Waiving them could free up $3–4M.

  • Two-way players and end-of-bench guys like David Roddy and Alex Reese could also be cut without penalty.

🔁 3. Stretch Provision

  • If they waive a player with guaranteed money (like Eric Gordon), they could stretch his salary over multiple years to reduce the immediate cap hit.

🧠 4. Renounce Free Agents

  • Letting go of cap holds for players like Kyle Lowry and Yabusele himself would open up room—but they’d lose the ability to re-sign them using exceptions.

🧮 5. Use the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception

  • If they can get under the first apron, they unlock the non-taxpayer MLE (~$12.9M), which is more than the taxpayer MLE (~$5.2M). That could be enough to keep Yabusele.

Brunson

why did brunson fall to the 2nd round? hmm….

Asking CoPilot AI:

how can the sixers sign quentin grimes? and can they sign both grimes and yabusele?

The Sixers can sign Quentin Grimes—and they’re making him their top priority—but signing both Grimes and Guerschon Yabusele will be a serious cap-balancing act.

📝 Grimes’ Situation

  • Grimes is a restricted free agent, so Philly can match any offer.

  • He’s expected to command $14–15 million per year, possibly more than the mid-level exception.

  • The Sixers own his Bird rights, meaning they can go over the cap to re-sign him—unless they trigger a hard cap at the first apron.

💸 Yabusele’s Situation

  • Yabusele is unrestricted and played on a minimum deal last season.

  • He’s projected to get offers up to $60 million over four years from teams like the Spurs.

  • Philly only has non-Bird rights, so they’d need to use the mid-level exception to keep him—which could trigger a hard cap.

⚖️ Can They Sign Both?

Technically, yes—but it’s very difficult:

  • If the Sixers trigger a hard cap (by using the non-taxpayer MLE or taking back more salary in a trade), they’ll be limited to ~$178 million in total salary.

  • That would make it nearly impossible to re-sign both Grimes and Yabusele without shedding salary elsewhere.

  • If they avoid the hard cap, they can re-sign Grimes using Bird rights and offer Yabusele the taxpayer MLE (~$5.2M/year)—but that’s likely not enough to keep him.

🧠 Bottom Line

  • Grimes is staying—the Sixers are committed to him.

  • Yabusele is a maybe—they’d need to either:

    • Convince him to take less money,

    • Or clear cap space by trading players like Oubre or Drummond.

I guess I am catching up on what most of the smart folks on the board already know.

He seems to have the work gene. Think he will be good.

A fun thought exercise

What if McCain comes out and shows he can run the lead guard position as a full time starter. Would they look to move Maxey for an elite wing?

Malcom Brogdon, Andrew Newbhard, shall I keep going?

Assuming VJ is the real deal, yes.

VJ is a guard but should be a low usage player for likely longer than the first 2 years. He doesnt create really for himself, or others. Think of him as a Ben Simmons who will actually shoot from 3 (albeit not very well). Hes a defensive stopper who will be best utilized in the dunker spot, or as a cutter without the ball.

He pretty much needs one of Maxey or McCain on the court with him at all times.

Hes a guard, but hes not a PG (really none of them are). So he needs a primary ball handler, which is security for those other 2.

Grimes is a good, consistent scorer who some solid defense.

The most in danger is Oubre. Can be traded at some point for cap relief.

Sounds like Thybulle

Mr Hunt comes in here pounding his chest that Ace Bailey is getting picked #2 and we are taking Dylan Harper at 3. That one came from left field and "shockingly” never happened. Then he said 2nd rounders don’t matter and I listed a bunch of them ranging from superstars, to starters to role players. How many L’s are you trying to take?

you have a generous interpretation of the term franchise saving players. lol

brunson & jokic are the only 2 you listed. and brunson dropped to the 2nd because of his lack of size & athleticism…jokic had a 17” vertical. same things everyone is knocking broome for.

Just because they aren’t franchise saving, doesn’t mean they don’t have value. You act like we have won 3 rings in the last decade. You need to find all the diamonds in the rough if you wanna be a proper contender. So mocking 2nd rounder picks is dumb. Justin Edwards is undrafted. Watch what he will do this year.

they rarely pan out. it’s a fact. maybe broome will contribute though. I hope he does.

I agree but doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t do due diligence and hope it works out. I have no idea about that guy, or honestly any prospects because I’m not a college guy. But I just want a damn ring lol.

Yeah but thankfully he is better offensively than thybulle. Thybulle was pretty useless.

I’m sure they did their due diligence on broome. That’s why they picked him. He was super productive in college so let’s hope his physicality & craftiness translates to the nba.

Anyone have some insight on the undrafted guard we selected if you watched him In college?

they really need an unexpected guy like edwards to take the next step. I’d love to see him surpass oubre & earn those minutes.
