Play the song!

McCain who tf thought it was a good idea to draft this little girl? SOFT

The good news is they've come a long way with the surgery now with the internal brace. You miss me time for this these days. But it'll still be weeks.

If he misses 5 games or less, its not the the worst thing. Throw VJ to the wolves right off the bat.

Dr ChatGPT:

It depends a lot on the severity of the tear (partial vs complete), whether there is displacement (e.g. a Stener lesion), and whether surgery is needed — but here’s a rough idea based on medical sources:

---

Typical recovery timelines

Non-surgical / mild to moderate tears

Partial tears or stable injuries (i.e. joint remains stable) may heal with immobilization (splint / cast) over 4–8 weeks.

Return of full strength, function, and pinch/grip may take longer (multiple months) depending on how the thumb is used.

Surgical / complete, unstable tears

For a complete tear where surgery is required, typical protocols involve immobilization (splint or cast) for 4–6 weeks or more depending on surgeon protocol.

After immobilization, gradual rehabilitation (range of motion, strength, functional use) is introduced.

Many sources suggest returning to unrestricted activity or sport at 2–3 months post-surgery, but full, confident use may take somewhat longer.

In athletic populations especially when augmented repairs are used (e.g. internal brace techniques), some athletes may return earlier (5–6 weeks) for light use, though full strength and durability take the full healing period.

---

So, for a professional basketball player like Jarred McCain:

If it’s a partial or stable tear, he might be out for a few weeks to 2 months, depending on how aggressive the rehab is and how his thumb tolerates use.

If it’s a complete unstable tear necessitating surgery, a more realistic timeline is 2 to 3 months before returning to full competition, and possibly longer to regain full strength, grip confidence, and endurance.

Here’s what the research and past NBA cases suggest — giving a more concrete estimate for how long Jared McCain might be out with a UCL (thumb) tear, assuming similar conditions.

What the literature says

A review article Return to Sport and Performance After Thumb ... reports that prior literature shows ≈ 9.6 weeks as the return-to-sport timeline after surgical repair of thumb ligament tears in NBA players.

In Return to Play in Athletes After Thumb Ulnar Collateral ligaments, the authors note a range of return times. In some series, basketball players returned in 6 to 8 weeks.

In a study of MLB players, 100% of them returned post UCL repair, with an average in-season return of 8 weeks.

The same basketball-focused paper (Holderread, etc.) suggests that 9.6 weeks is a benchmark for NBA players recovering from surgically repaired thumb ligament tears.

A paper on accelerated rehabilitation with internal brace (suture tape augmentation) suggests this technique may allow earlier return by increasing mechanical stability.

---

Relevant NBA examples

Anfernee Simons had thumb surgery (UCL repair) in 2023 and was expected to miss 6 weeks.

Moses Moody underwent surgery on his thumb UCL more recently. The report states he is "expected to make a full recovery by the start of training camp.” Depending on when the injury happened relative to camp, that suggests a timeline roughly in the same 6–10 week zone.

Jerami Grant in past seasons had thumb UCL surgery and the team ruled him out for at least 6 weeks.

---

Estimate for McCain

Putting this together, for a high-level NBA guard like McCain:

If the tear is complete and requires surgery, a return in the 6–10 week window is quite plausible, especially with modern techniques (e.g. internal brace) and aggressive rehab.

The "9.6 weeks” figure from NBA-relevant literature is likely a reasonable target under optimal conditions.

If the tear is less severe (partial or stable) and doesn’t require full operative repair, he might return somewhat earlier (assuming rehab is favorable and there’s no setback).

Realistically, one should assume 2 to 3 months (8–12 weeks) as a safe window for full return to play, considering the need to regain strength, mobility, and thumb durability under contact/ball handling.

So, for McCain, I’d estimate around 2 to 2½ months as a likely recovery timeline (with surgery), assuming no complications.

If you like, I can try to find any team medical statements or Sixers’ reporting to see what their doctors are projecting specifically for him. Do you want me to check?

How long you thinking, 4-6 weeks?

I wonder if he did it while he was benching 50lbs 20250925_165251.jpg

I’m seeing that it’s anywhere from a 2-4 month recovery time if surgery is required.

McCain is a bust. Body can’t handle the nba.

Probably quicker

Grimes is done with the Sixers. Good bye.

McCain is an injury bust. Good bye.

Sixers continue to suck.

And, I quit on the Sixers. Good bye.

Done posting.

With the internal brace I think I recall Drew Brees playing in like 6 weeks. If a QB can grip a football in that amount of time, a basketball player should be fine too. Shooting the basketball does not stress that ligament.

Glad to see Milicic on the roster. Hopefully he plays well in pre-season. I badly want him to be a secret weapon for this team.

Embiid:

Feel "pretty good". Plan in place. Trying to check all the boxes. Taking it day by day.

Love the qualifiers. Basically telling us he has no clue whats happening.

Ok. Something that will be interesting to pay attention to because we know the 6ers success rate with working on players' shots. VJ says he had a flat shot. And now his arc is way better. Better than a month ago even. So, the 6ers have changed his shot. Lets see if he shoots better or worse!

Maxey is basically putting everyone to shame in 1 on 1s except VJ holding his own. Embiid plays some soccer with the basketball.
