There is, it can manoeuver in 4 directions.

Apparently, not enough to be called a submarine.

"We only have one button, that's it. It should be like an elevator, it shouldn't take a lot of skill," Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, which conducts deep-sea tours in the Titan submersible, told Pogue.

The Titan, being a submersible and not a submarine, does not have enough power to leave port and return on its own, and instead relies on a mother ship to carry and retrieve it.

The range of motion for the gamepad sticks could also be a concern. Not sure what kind of fine controls are needed for a submersible like this, but I'd assume dual full-sized joysticks would allow for more granular input, but based how limited cabin space was inside that thing, I supposed everything had to be as compact as possible.

mentally I was thinking it would work like a flight sim or FPS (with Y-axis inverted). I could see that working, though it would require more thrusters than I would imagine that garage project had.

bonus points if R2 shot mini torpedos.

The degrees of motion seem different. Flight sims usually have a full sized joystick for roll and pitch, and then pedals for yaw with a throttle for speed, but since this has no roll (and apparently not even yaw or pitch?) then they could map one stick to yaw and throttle with the other dedicated for ascent / descent?

I'm sure they have a second controller brand new in box to plug in.

I actually think I have some brand new Atari 2600 controllers still in the box, in my attic.

Fun Fact:   You can plug Sega Genesis controllers into old Atari's.

I should still have at least one (maybe more) old Atari's in my attic too. Along with an old Commodore 64 and an old Colecovision and a video game unit called Vectrex that was all in one, with a monitor and controller built in. It had colored plastic covers to put over the black and white screen to make the games 'in color'.

A submarine is a boat that can go to sea independently, a submersible can only operate with a surface support vessel, it has nothing to do with manoeuvrability.

Something tells me being a billionaire in that situation doesn't give you an upper hand.

You're probably right.  The one that did survive the billionaire choking and offed him should be face to face with The Meg by now.

You couldn't pay me to get in one of those things.  I can barely get on a plane without some liquid courage.  I hope they find it.  Wonder what went wrong.

I had one of those..... Wish I kept it because they are a pretty good collectors item now. I've seen them go for a couple thousand

I have two of them, one was mine the other was my brothers. 10 or so years ago I re-found them in the attic and told him, he didn't want it and said 'sell it on eBay'. I didn't, but if I can get $250,000.00, maybe I'll sell them and go on a dangerous vacation... err... maybe not.

OceanGate, company behind missing Titanic tourist sub, once subject of lawsuit over safety complaints

The five-person submersible weighs 20,000 pounds and is capable of diving 13,120 feet

An excerpt from the below article:

Quote

After Lochridge’s inspection report, OceanGate called a meeting that included the company’s CEO, human resources director, and engineering director.

At the meeting, Lochridge discovered why he had been denied access to the viewport information from the engineering department: The viewport at the forward of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters – although OceanGate intended to take passengers down to depths of 4,000 meters, according to the complaint.

The documents say Lochridge learned the viewport manufacturer "would only certify to a depth of 1,300 meters due to the experimental design of the viewport supplied by OceanGate, which was out of the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy standards.

Doesn't sound good. Reminds me of the shuttle Challenger explosion, where NASA was essentially begged (the night before the launch) not to launch due to the freezing weather and potential for disastrous consequences.

OceanGate, the company behind the submersible that went missing while visiting the wreckage of the Titanic, was once the subject of a massive lawsuit from an employee who alleged he was fired because he had raised safety concerns over how deep the vessel could descend.

The former OceanGate employee, David Lochridge, refused to greenlight manned tests of the submersible over safety concerns. The Washington-based company later sued Lochridge for disclosing confidential information.

Lochridge then counter-sued, alleging that OceanGate had fired him for voicing his concerns about the vessel.

Lochridge’s counterclaim states he used an inspection report that identified numerous issues that posed "serious safety concerns, and offered corrective action and recommendations for each."

After Lochridge’s inspection report, OceanGate called a meeting that included the company’s CEO, human resources director, and engineering director.

The documents say Lochridge learned the viewport manufacturer "would only certify to a depth of 1,300 meters due to the experimental design of the viewport supplied by OceanGate, which was out of the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy standards.

"OceanGate refused to pay for the manufacturer to build a viewport that would meet the required depth of 4,000 meters," the complaint states.

"Rather than address [Lochridge’s] concerns or undergo corrective action to rectify and ensure the safety of the experimental Titan, or utilize a standard classification agency to inspect the Titan, OceanGate did the exact opposite – they immediately fired Lochridge," the counterclaim states. "OceanGate gave Lochridge approximately 10 minutes to clear out his desk and exit the premises."

The New Republic was the first to report on the lawsuit.

OCEANGATE TITAN DISAPPEARANCE: HAMISH HARDING'S FAMILY, ACTION AVIATION HOLD OUT HOPE IN NEW STATEMENT

The submersible Titan was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles south of St. John's, Newfoundland, according to Canada's Joint Rescue Coordination Center, spurring a desperate international rescue effort. Rescuers were racing against the clock because the oxygen supply could run out by approximately 6 a.m. Thursday.

Titanic remains shipwreck

The expedition was led by OceanGate, making its third voyage to the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank in 1912, killing all but about 700 of the roughly 2,200 passengers and crew.

The five people on the vessel are OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British businessman Hamish Harding, father-and-son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, who are members of one of Pakistan’s most prominent families, and Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former French navy officer who is considered a Titanic expert.

The five-person submersible weighs 20,000 lbs. and is capable of diving 13,120 feet. The U.S. Coast Guard estimated Tuesday afternoon that the missing OceanGate Titan submarine should run out of breathable air by Thursday morning.

How much to take a vessel to take a tour of the vessel that was taking a tour of the Titanic?

Obviously double the price so half a milly for that privilege.

Well, insurance just got crazy expensive so..

During the Cold War a Soviet submarine sank to the ocean floor.  The Americans found it and extracted it from the ocean floor with a giant claw thingy.   On the way up it broke into pieces though.  Fun times.

And they have to pay $200,000 to experience that horror trap? No thanks. People have way too much money to spend.

That's a definite NOPE.

Using a modified PS3 controller is beyond weird

Way more expensive .mil equipment than the submersible in question is controlled using an XBox controller. Chosen because there’s a billion of them and troops already have experience using the controller.

That said, how TF you a billionaire and skimp on extra safety features? You’d think at that level of wealth, @vikas83:polo shirts::billionaire:a gd device designed to take you to the most inhospitable place on earth.

Has Vikas ever been to see the Titanic or is he one of the poors??
