Put differently, what should make me think he had inspired the words in the first place if I knew for certain (as I did) that he had not preserved them? This became a major problem for me in trying to figure out which Bible I thought was inspired. Another big problem is one that I don’t deal with in Misquoting Jesus. If God inspired certain books in the decades after Jesus died, how do I know that the later church fathers chose the right books to be included in the Bible? I could accept it on faith—surely God would not allow noninspired books in the canon of Scripture. But as I engaged in more historical study of the early Christian movement, I began to realize that there were lots of Christians in lots of places who fully believed that other books were to be accepted as Scripture; conversely, some of the books that eventually made it into the canon were rejected by church leaders in different parts of the church, sometimes for centuries. In some parts of the church, the Apocalypse of John (the book of Revelation) was flat out rejected as containing false teaching, whereas the Apocalypse of Peter, which eventually did not make it in, was accepted. There were some Christians who accepted the Gospel of Peter and some who rejected the Gospel of John. There were some Christians who accepted a truncated version of the Gospel of Luke (without its first two chapters), and others who accepted the now noncanonical Gospel of Thomas. Some Christians rejected the three Pastoral Epistles of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus, which eventually made it in, and others accepted the Epistle of Barnabas, which did not. If God was making sure that his church would have the inspired books of Scripture, and only those books, why were there such heated debates and disagreements that took place over three hundred years? Why didn’t God just make sure that these debates lasted weeks, with assured results, rather than centuries?” Bart D. November 17, 20231 yr I'll save TNT some time, this is from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops: Critical analysis makes it difficult to accept the idea that the gospel as it now stands was written by one person. Jn 21 seems to have been added after the gospel was completed; it exhibits a Greek style somewhat different from that of the rest of the work. The prologue (Jn 1:1–18) apparently contains an independent hymn, subsequently adapted to serve as a preface to the gospel. Within the gospel itself there are also some inconsistencies, e.g., there are two endings of Jesus’ discourse in the upper room (Jn 14:31; 18:1). To solve these problems, scholars have proposed various rearrangements that would produce a smoother order. However, most have come to the conclusion that the inconsistencies were probably produced by subsequent editing in which homogeneous materials were added to a shorter original. Other difficulties for any theory of eyewitness authorship of the gospel in its present form are presented by its highly developed theology and by certain elements of its literary style. For instance, some of the wondrous deeds of Jesus have been worked into highly effective dramatic scenes (Jn 9); there has been a careful attempt to have these followed by discourses that explain them (Jn 5; 6); and the sayings of Jesus have been woven into long discourses of a quasi-poetic form resembling the speeches of personified Wisdom in the Old Testament. https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/0

Translation for those of you who aren't familiar with the special brand of passive aggressive evangelism that @Christian Eagle is engaging in. "Good news" is a classic marketing ploy whereby the worst aspects of christianity are repackaged and rebranded to appeal to those who are the most intellectually vulnerable or susceptible to a system that unburdens them of the weight of thought. CE is a Nigerian prince letting you know that you just won the pan-african lottery. But the most important aspect of his con is the air of unshakable surety and confidence. The whole "you'll never rattle my faith" bit and "you'll eventually see it my way" every time there's pushback against their proselytizing is an act. This is a wall they put up so that they never have to really confront the anachronism and ultimate inadequacy of their world view. Religion never stands up to the rigors of analysis and debate, so the apologists just press buttons on a sound board, and try to act they're being above the fray. Talk about dime a dozen, this yutz in right off the assembly line.

November 17, 20231 yr Author One reason I know that Jesus and the Bible are true is because any time a Christian shares Jesus's message the demonic atheists go into complete meltdown and incessantly spew their vitriol hatred. Jesus told us to expect it and they never disappoint. John 15:18-19 18 "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
