Rodgers was the better player. I don’t think it’s as close as people think either. Favre never scared me. He was just a better Eli Manning.

Favre was over rated IMO. I’m not saying he was bad, but he’s put up on a pedestal more than he deserves.

Brett Favre in this day and age would be insufferable. He’s just past the boomer threshold of using social media and the like.

I think he won 3 MVPs? Definitely a HOFer. Maybe a little overrated as he seemed to be at his best during a time where there wasn’t a lot of great QB play. Kind of before Manning and Brady in their prime and as Marino, Young, and Elway were starting to slide. Could be wrong on that.

I just couldn’t stand how the media would just slob his knob over every little thing like he was just the All-American alter boy

All time leader in INT thrown (and by a LARGE margin).  Well earned.

He also had the most TDs thrown at the time he retired.  But, has since been passed.  Hard to think he'll be passed for INTs any time soon, maybe ever.

336 for Farve.
277 for Blanda.
268 for Hadl.

That's the top 3.

As a young QB, he became an obsession of John Madden, and won a Super Bowl.  And so the legend of Brett Favre was born.  And it never really ended.  But he singlehandedly lost the game for the Packers against the Eagles in that 2002 playoff game with that punt of a pass he tossed to Brian Dawkins, that could have been picked off by Lito Sheppard as well.   It was literally a pass that was so bad that those two had to communicate which would catch it so that they didn't knock it away from each other.   And he did that so very often.  Just chucked a ball up in a terrible spot and killed any chance for his team.

You bring up a good point and maybe I have recency bias. He got 3 straight in the prime of his career (on a stacked packers team) and what I think of was 2000 on.

But I can’t help think of him chucking up backbreaking INTs in big games, like after 4th and 26

Didn’t know what a hoagie was too. I still don’t forgive him for calling a sugar snap pea "edamame” while eating the whole damn thing either.

McNabb and Culpepper were tearing up the league.  Vick...

Favre had big time passing yardage.  He had awesome weapons at his disposal, and was a passer in breakout era of running QBs.

His only flaw was his INTs but his arm strength was a show by itself.

You took the good with the bad and a guy with that many INTs gave a lot of good to still be as respected a he was.

His career length helped him accumulate crazy numbers too. But,  he was good. Really really tough player too. Could take a lickin out there and kept getting up.  Played through injury a lot. His toughness contributed to his reputation as well.

Correct.   It isn't recency bias... it is the end of his career that tarnished his legacy.  Those poorly timed INTs late in his career really hurt his legacy.    But, weirdly, I just looked it up.  He only led the league in INTs 3 times.  I would have thought it was more often.

Interesting. But how many times top 3 or top 5?

In his entire career he has a 3.3 INT% which is slightly higher than Elway (3.1), Kurt Warner (3.1) Cunningham (3.0), Aikman (3.0), but still way better than Testaverde (4.0), Jaworski (4.0), Tarkenton (4.1), Dan Fouts, (4.3) Marc Wilson (4.9), Terry Bradshaw (5.4), and Namath (5.8).

Overrated or not, Brett Favre was just pure fun to watch. It was like watching Johnny Manziel at A&M.

Moon over Earl Campbell?  Any Oilers fan would argue whether it would be Bruce Matthews, Earl or Elvin Bethea.  Warren had the most seasons and pro bowls but Earl got an MVP and was so good for six years.  But Big E to me is special as when the Oilers were awful they had Elvin Bethea.  The problem with that list is it leaves out some great OL.   The Oilers/Titans GOAT has to be Bruce Matthews. 7 time first team All Pro, 2 times second team All Pro and 14 Pro Bowls.  All great players.

I like defense and Butkus was a great LB, but Payton may have been the smoothest RB I ever saw play.

I would never knock Sweetness but Butkus WAS the Bears for his whole career. As for smooth, Sayers has to get the nod , though his career was short.

There's a quote about Walter Payton I heard years ago that always stuck with me:

"When God created a football player, he created Walter Payton"

What stuck with me about Walter Payton was him sulking in his locker after winning the Super Bowl 46-10, because he didn’t get to score a TD.

Great football player; probably not the greatest guy.  Certainly much nicer than either O.J. Or A.P., though.

There's literally an award for excellence on and off the field called the Walter Payton award, but somehow he's a bad guy. Ditka did him dirty big time by giving the ball to a DT over him at the goal line.

So this is sulking now?

Crazy what people "remember."

F it, I looked it up. I may have fat fingered something but here is what I came up with:

Top
1993, 2003, 2008

Top 3
1997 (3), 1998 (2)

Top 5
1999 (4), 2000 (5), 2002 (5), 2003 (4), 2006 (4)

And in his final year, he tied for 32nd in the league for INTs with only 7

So for half of his playing years, he was top 5 in INTs.

So, being nice to Rivera’s dad means he didn’t sulk in his locker after the Super Bowl?  It might surprise you, but more than one thing can be true.

Yep, this is pretty much my opinion as well.  Brett made crazy decisions, really terrible ones that sometimes resulted in bad INTs.  He also made crazy decisions that resulted in amazing plays.  He was a gunslinger, he wasn't afraid to throw the ball down the field.

Brett Favre was also incredibly tough.  You just couldn't keep that guy down.  He hardly missed any time.

I agree it would hurt the rooks the most.  But it just seems that with every change in the NFLPA/NFL negotiations, the players are asked to do less in order to get ready for a season.  I may be reading too much into it…but it seems that way

This might actually force the Eagles to do more. They only have 6 OTA practices, which is up from the last few years. This would be more time at the facility.

I just didn’t see as much of Sayer back then and don’t want to be colored by Billy Dee Williams in Brian’s Song.  In my elementary and junior high years mostly.  Elementary with Jim Brown but what a runner.  Earl reminded me a bit of Brown.  How guys that big could be so agile, fast and yet so powerful. (Barkley is a bit like that for me.  Excited to see him in green.)

Emmitt Smith’s style reminded me of Payton.
