Retiring numbers is dumb

Yeah... they shouldn't do it. If it's a number from a former star make someone earn it. Like Michael Irving doesn't mind seeing his #88 out there provided that it's a good player wearing it.

It makes no sense to not allow anyone else to wear a number, even from just a generational standpoint. Like Steve Van Buren for example. Is he an all time great? Absolutely. Was he the best Eagles RB ever? Arguably, no. What percentage of the current fan base even knows how good he was or seen him play? So why is his number retired?

A name and the number in the Eagles hall of fame enshrined somewhere in the stadium or team facility is perfect.

Yes, I don't know where anyone ever decided one day that is the gesture. You happened to wear this number, therefore no one can ever wear it again. It's a number. It has nothing to do with their contributions or accomplishments. Build them a memorial or something. Unretire all numbers. Eventually they are going to run out of numbers anyway, it's inevitable it will happen.

And yet they couldn’t wait to hand out 31 (Wilbert Montgomery) and 66 (Bill Bergey) as soon as their tenures were over. Those were two great Eagles players and no one cared that scrubs were quickly wearing their numbers. But nowadays, someone like Brent Celek, who was a nice player but hardly an elite one, retires and his jersey sits in mothballs for half a decade.

Different ownership.

They are giving out some interesting numbers...

I agree 100%.

Of the rumored Sixers targets to pair with Embiid and Maxey I rank them in the order of which I hope they end up getting as:

1. LeBron

2. Kevin Durant

3. Jimmy Butler

4. Paul George

5. Brandon Ingram

Wild card option of Steph Curry would probably take the #1 spot.  But since Embiid left Curry's shoe company I'm not thinking it's too realistic anymore.

Who do you like the Phillies to trade for by the deadline?

Yup, hes the reason im an eagles fan but I agree, even though hes an icon im also not sure he meets the criteria either

It is curious that his number isnt retired but Lurie wont hand it out.

Weird stuff

Having said that I would have loved to have seen randall in todays wide open era.

He would kill dudes he was just so electric as a runner and so underrated as a passer.

Of all the qbs the eagles have ever had I think he was the most physically gifted.

Vick is up there but he was never the passer randall was, or punter😉

Agreed…especially if he had one of today’s offensive minds to mold him (Reid, McVay, Steichen, or Shanahan).  In his prime, he didn’t have the best offensive coaching.

That would be my rankings as well.

And in a dream world,  2 of those guys get together and plan a Miami heat type of thing where they take a little less do we can afford both of them.

Embiid, KeBron, Durant, Maxey.... championship.

Listening to the rookie pressers and I'm left feeling they drafted some good character dudes.  I am not enough of a draft nerd to have had the first clue on Jalyx Hunt.  I have a feeling he's going to be a locker room favorite.  He seems like a really likeable guy - I hope he develops well.

Since 2021, Jalen Carter is really the only "character" risk they took. They got A+ guys in Dickerson, Nolan Smith, Sydney Brown, Nakobe Dean, etc.

2020 & 2019 was ROUGH character wise: Reagor, Quez, Hightower, Dillard, JJAW, etc.

Football character matters.

True... give them a damn statue and ring of honor and be done with it. Hell some of these retired #s aren't even HOF players. Unlock it after 10 years or something. They're running out of numbers at this rate and some of the coolest #s not being able to be worn again by new potential future greats is some BS.

Too many old guys.  It's like the geriatric Moose club.

Par for the course with the Eagles. We can knock Howie for his misses in the draft or worry that Lurie might get too involved as an owner, but one thing's for sure and that's the fact that the Eagles are going to bring in top notch men first and foremost. We joke about the Eagles being the "Gold Standard" and we've had to endure some truly heartbreaking losses over the last 20 years, I don't think we appreciate how good we have it with the Eagles ownership and management. It will be interesting to see if Julian continues what Jeff started or if he takes the keys to dads legacy and ruins it. I hope that day doesn't come for some time though.

I agree. At Michigan, the number 1 is special, ever since Anthony Carter. They didn’t retire it. Rather they give it to a player they think is worthy of it. LSU does the same with number 18.

Roman Wilson wore number 1. Wish we’d drafted him.

Leo made no sense to hang onto for that long for an on-field role. His quick transition to the coaching staff though proves they liked something about him.

He makes great coffee.
